Washington will invest billions of dollars in Africa for its economic development

Rabat, (AFP) - The head of the US delegation participating in the US-Africa Business Summit, which kicked off in Marrakech on Wednesday, told AFP that the United States will invest "billions of dollars" in cooperation with the private sector to develop the continent economically.

"The United States is seeking to pump billions of dollars into trade and investment to create jobs and achieve inclusive and sustainable economic growth and prosperity throughout the African continent," said Alice Albright, chairwoman of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (a US government development agency).

"Now, more than ever, we must harness the full range of tools of the American government, harness the power of the American private sector, and strengthen our partnerships with business leaders and investors from across the African diaspora," she added.

Since 2004, this US government agency has invested nearly $9 billion in 25 African countries.

Albright is participating in the US-Africa Business Summit, which ends Friday, in Marrakech.

This summit, which is held for the first time in North Africa, is organized annually by the "Companies Council of Africa", which is a special body.

In addition to the US government delegation, political leaders, representatives of the African business community, decision makers and investors from the US private sector will participate in the meeting, according to the organizers.

Inaugurating the summit, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said, "It is time for Africa (...) to play its central and natural role on the international scene."

Among the issues addressed at this summit: combating climate change, energy transition, food security, health, agriculture, infrastructure, new technologies and the digital divide.

In Washington, the White House announced on Wednesday that President Joe Biden will host African leaders between December 13 and 15 at a summit that "will highlight the importance of relations between the United States and Africa."

A lawsuit against “Epic Games” for causing addiction to “Fortnite” fans on the game

Montreal - (AFP) - Epic Games, the developer of the "Fortnite" game, is facing a class action lawsuit in Canada, accusing it of making fans of the video game addicted to it.

And three parents blame the game “Fortnite” for causing an addiction similar to that “caused by heroin or cocaine,” referring to “physical and psychological” symptoms that their children are exposed to, such as “headaches” and “backaches,” in addition to “significant social disorders.”

A decision issued on Wednesday that authorized the completion of the lawsuit indicated that one of the three aforementioned minors was diagnosed with cyber addiction, while another, who was 13 years old at the time, played 7,781 games within two years, while spending “three hours of playing at least a day,” and he sometimes continued to play until midnight. .

The plaintiffs asserted that the game "encourages excessive spending of money".

Although downloading it is free, users can purchase the virtual "V-Bucks" currency, in order to benefit from accessories or details in the game, including clothes or dances, for example.

Jean-Philippe Caron, one of the two lawyers who submitted the petition, told AFP that one of the aforementioned children had spent more than six thousand Canadian dollars (about $4,333) and "went as far as saying that he was a victim of fraud."

The lawyer confirmed that he is "satisfied" and "confident" of the expected judicial results, considering that "the evidence is convincing" and supports all the cases he handles.

The three parents and their defense attorneys are demanding "moral and material compensation in addition to a refund of what they paid," specifically the sums spent by minor players on purchases.

For their part, representatives of Epic Games assert that the evidence is “insufficient”, noting that there is no “expert report”, “medical report stating a diagnosis of +addiction”, or a study centered on the “harmful effects of video games”.

The game developer will have to defend itself in the coming months before the Quebec courts, to face charges that it developed and marketed a "dangerous and harmful" product, and failed to address the game's risks and harm to minors through its payment system.

In April, Epic Games reached a $26.5 million settlement in North Carolina to resolve an issue related to the purchase of its virtual currency minors.

US President Joe Biden's visit Beware of poisoned honey

Written by: Walid Al-Awad

On a visit that is the first of its kind since sitting in the presidency less than two years ago, US President Joe Biden arrived in the region, during which he is expected to meet many leaders and leaders of the region, and he will also meet with President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday in the city of Bethlehem. The features of the visit, as indicated by its introductions, are clearly visible, based primarily on the United States seeking to impose new priorities different from what prevailed over the past seven decades, during which the Arab-Israeli conflict, and its core, the Palestinian cause, occupied the center of global attention.

This visit carries multiple warnings that the US President himself and the staff of his administration pre-empted with a series of statements that confirmed that its most important goal is to consolidate Israel's position in the region and maintain its security. Its letters are accurately and carefully during the term of former President Donald Trump, which confirms that the current US administration is following the same path that successive US administrations have been following, especially with regard to the strategic relationship with Israel, and among the objectives of the upcoming visit also stands out the quest to form an alliance with multiple economic goals , political and military, in which the Israeli role is pivotal.

Many data indicate so far that the issue of forming such an alliance has not matured due to the rejection of some influential countries of this form of alliances that are being planned between Israel and the United States of America, especially with regard to a military alliance establishing a (Middle Eastern NATO) and dealing in light of it with Iran as a source The danger to the peoples of the region and the Arab countries, and completely ignoring the fact that Israel is based on this transformation, if it is achieved through its continuous aggression, its racist nature, and its continued denial of the resolutions of international legitimacy, is the source of the permanent danger to security, stability, and peace in the region and the world.

The great concern about the consequences of this visit on the Palestinian level is great, not only because of the marginalization of the Palestinian cause and the shifting of conflict priorities in the region; Rather, this poisoned visit will be at the expense of the Palestinian cause, its status, and the necessity of resolving it by applying the resolutions of international legitimacy on the issue of Palestine, and the greatest fear is that it will be sufficient to provide some improvements and economic facilities in addition to some poisoned gifts and promises, and avoid touching the basic issues, even those that Biden had previously promised. Himself, in addition to continuing to adopt the policy of successive administrations to stand by the occupying state and not to exert any pressure on it and oblige it to stop its aggression, settlement, daily killings, continued detention, siege, land confiscation, and the Judaization of Jerusalem, and the need to compel it to implement the start of a serious political process through an international conference that leads to implementation Resolutions of international legitimacy to end the occupation and enable the Palestinian people to establish their independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital and to resolve the refugee issue in accordance with Resolution 194. Therefore, it must be said very clearly that there is no betting or dependence on what the visit can bring in the interest of the Palestinian people and their rights, but it is without a doubt It will represent a serious test of the credibility of the promises that Biden and his campaign had made during the first campaign. The elections that brought him to the presidential seat two years ago, and these are promises that, if fulfilled in their entirety, can be considered an indication of a new path that can be built upon.

On the Palestinian level, many positions have emerged dealing with how to deal with this visit at the official and popular levels. I believe that with a cautious understanding of this meeting at the official level, as its miserable results are almost known to all, but the reality of our Palestinian situation requires dealing with such meetings according to the jurisprudential rule. “Preventing corruption is better than bringing benefits,” especially since everything Biden carries falls under the framework of multifaceted corruption. This requires that he officially hear what he must hear, adhere to his demand to implement his promises, and be very careful not to provide any cover, no matter how large, that facilitates his malicious mission of integrating the occupying state into the region, and not to take the issue and the official Palestinian position as a bridge to that.

As for the popular level, all those who are aware of the dangers of this visit and its toxic goals are called upon to express in all forms their rejection of what carries with it what we might call poison in honey, and to prepare nationally for the aftermath of this visit, in which everyone will discover that “the bet on it, if any,” was just a mirage. .

A US recession looms as the Federal Reserve continues to raise interest rates

WASHINGTON -- (Xinhua) -- The specter of a recession in the United States looms large as the Federal Reserve continues its campaign of raising interest rates.

On Wednesday, the US Federal Reserve raised interest rates by three-quarters of a point for the fourth time in a row amid the worst inflation in 40 years.

Although job opportunities are available and unemployment is low, economists expect the possibility of a recession in the coming year, especially if the Federal Reserve continues to raise interest rates at such an aggressive pace.

A report on job glut published on Friday underscores the problem. The strong job growth figures "increase the chances that next year the US will experience a hard economic downturn in the form of a bad recession," Desmond Lachman, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, told Xinhua.

This is because as job growth increases, the Federal Reserve needs to raise interest rates, in an effort to slow inflation, and along with that, the economy as a whole.

Lashman stated that the Fed will continue to do so even as cracks appear in the US and global financial system, and even when the US real estate market appears to have already entered a recession.

"To bring inflation down, the Fed will have to somehow raise wages at a slower pace than they are now which probably means the US will have to go into recession," Lachman said.

To be sure, higher interest rates would hit consumers' wallets in one way or another, such as by making it more expensive for Americans to pay off debt or get a mortgage.

But despite several interest rate increases, inflation continues to rise, suggesting that there is a long way to go before prices stabilize and the US sees 2 percent inflation as acceptable.

In fact, the current inflation rate continues to climb above this benchmark.

The widely watched consumer price index showed inflation in September fell slightly to 8.2 percent year-on-year, but rose 0.4 percent month-on-month.

At the same time, lawmakers are increasingly calling for the Federal Reserve to halt interest rate increases, as critics worry they could trigger a recession. Critics point out that while prices are high, at least there are jobs.

Economists wonder what will happen in a scenario where there are much fewer jobs and prices have not yet fallen to acceptable levels? This is a recipe for "stagflation," or a stagnant economy with high inflation.

The Fed gave no indication that it would change course.

Both inflation and fears of a recession have hit the US stock market hard in recent months, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down more than 4,000 points year-to-date.

Investors continue to shy away from the stock market. While there have been moments of recovery, markets remain volatile.

Hearing Trump's testimony in a fraud case postponed due to the death of his ex-wife

New York - (AFP) - US judicial authorities have agreed to delay giving former President Donald Trump his testimony in a civil investigation in New York related to allegations of fraud in his company, due to the death of his ex-wife, Ivana.

Trump and his sons Donald Jr. and Ivanka were scheduled to testify under oath in the investigation led by New York Attorney General Letitia James on Friday.

But a spokesman for James said the affidavits were being held due to the death Thursday of Ivana Trump, the mother of Donald Jr. and Ivanka.

"In light of the death of Ivana Trump yesterday, we received a request from Donald Trump's lawyers and children to defer giving the three statements, which we agreed to," the spokesperson added in a statement emailed to AFP.

He noted that the postponement was "temporary and deposition will be rescheduled as soon as possible. No further information on dates or otherwise to be provided at this time," adding, "We offer our condolences to the Trump family."

Ivana Trump died at the age of 73 at her home in Manhattan. The police are investigating whether the death resulted from a fall on the stairs of her home, and the city coroner will determine the cause of death.

James suspects that the Trump Organization fraudulently overvalued real estate when applying for bank loans, while undervaluing it to tax authorities in order to pay lower taxes.

The Trump family has denied any wrongdoing, but in June a judge ruled that investigators must question Trump and his two sons within a week, starting July 15.

And if James, who belongs to the Democratic Party, finds any evidence of financial misconduct, she will be able to sue the “Trump Organization” for damages, but she cannot file criminal charges because it is a civil investigation.

The investigation led by James is one of several legal battles in which Trump has been embroiled, threatening to complicate any attempt to run for the US presidency again in 2024.

The Trump Organization is also under investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney for possible financial crimes and insurance fraud.

A strong US dollar causes serious problems for low- and middle-income countries

NEW YORK -- The appreciation of the US dollar has compounded the crunching problems of debt sustainability for dozens of low- and middle-income countries, prompting them to diversify their reserve currencies, Foreign Affairs reported in mid-October.

The report stated that the dollar "is everyone's problem, in the words of John Connally, former US Treasury Secretary."

The report indicated that much of the corporate debt in these countries, which is in the hands of foreign investors, is denominated in dollars.

These debts become more expensive to service and pay off when the dollar is strong.

He also said that "even when the external debt is denominated in the local currency, the depreciation of the exchange rate against the dollar can cause problems."

He added that US financial companies, which see themselves exposed to losses in those foreign investments, withdraw from emerging market assets, which imposes additional downward pressure on the value of foreign currencies in a vicious circle.

The elimination of a "man-eating" tiger in India after killing nine people

New Delhi (AFP) - A tiger dubbed "the man-eater of Champaran" was killed by Indian police after killing at least nine people during a massive operation involving 200 people, some of whom were traveling on elephants, officials said Sunday. .

The animal sowed terror among the population in the vicinity of the Valmiki Tiger Reserve in Champaran, eastern India, and killed at least six people for a month, including a woman and her eight-year-old son on Saturday.

Even before the two recent deaths, the authorities had described the tiger - which is believed to be a male of three or four years old - as "man-eating", meaning that it could be exterminated.

Previous attempts to neutralize the animal danger have failed.

"Two teams entered the forest on the back of two elephants on Saturday afternoon, and a third waited at the point where we thought the leopard would come out, and we shot (...) to kill it there," local police chief Kiran Kumar told AFP.

Kumar said that while the villagers were striking tin containers, it took the team of eight snipers and about 200 members of the forest department nearly six hours to complete the operation.

Environmental activists attribute these cases to the rapid expansion of human settlements around forests and major wildlife routes, such as the habitats of elephants and tigers, which is a source of increasing clashes between humans and animals in some parts of India.

About 225 people were killed in tiger attacks between 2014 and 2019 in India, according to government data.

These statistics revealed that more than 200 tigers were killed by illegal poachers or by electrocution between 2012 and 2018.

India is home to about 70% of the world's tigers, with 2,967 tigers in the country in 2018.

Algeria summit and the time of Arab transformations

Written by: Dr. Nagy Sadeq Sharab

There is no doubt that the resumption of the periodic Arab summit in Algeria next November is an important shift in preserving the structure of Arab relations and preserving the institution of the summit, as it is the highest institution of the Arab League and entrusted with the future of joint Arab action, in light of the exceptional threats and challenges affecting the existence of the region. The Arab region is a historical target area since its inception by regional, international and internal forces. This summit is the forty-third summit since the founding of the Arab League. This issue in itself confirms that there is no alternative to the Arab summits and there is no alternative to the Arab League, and that it is the alternative to all regional and international options and approaches that seek to fill the power vacuum in the region and turn it into spheres of influence.

The Algiers summit comes after the last summit held in Tunisia in 2019, which is a long period in the history of the region that has been violated by regional and international powers, and a long period in which challenges and threats have accumulated that affect the future of many Arab countries, as we see in Iraq, Libya, Yemen and Syria, with Arab differences. The continuation of the Palestinian division and the decline of the Palestinian cause.

The summit comes in the context of the Ukrainian war, whose political and economic repercussions have reached the region, and in the context of the conflict at the top of the international system between China and Russia on the one hand, and the United States on the other, in addition to the Iranian nuclear file, and at the heart of this transformation will be determined the future of the Arab region, its role and status. .

Perhaps the biggest challenge facing the Arab Summit is restoring its credibility, prestige, and position among the Arab citizen, and confidence in the effectiveness and dynamism of joint Arab action. The resolution supporting ending the Palestinian division, adopting an initiative for Palestinian reconciliation through the summit, and restoring Syria's seat in the League Council.

One of the reasons for optimism in holding this summit is that it comes after life has revived in the Arab body, most notably the Al-Ula summit and the Gulf reconciliation, which is the basis for the success of the summit, and the recent conciliatory visits of the Emir of Qatar.

The Arab summits were held in agreement, which is the basis of their success. They also coincided with political and security threats affecting all Arab national security. For example, the Anshas summit coincided with the Israeli threat to Palestine and the entire region, the second in Lebanon and coincided with the tripartite aggression against Egypt, the third summit to confront the Jordan River water diversion projects in 1964, the Khartoum summit in 1967 in the wake of the 1967 aggression, and the Cairo summit in 1970 to confront the clash. The armed conflict between Jordan and the Palestinian resistance, the Cairo Summit 1976 to consider the civil war in Lebanon, the Baghdad Summit 1987 in the wake of the Camp David Accords and the transfer of the League headquarters to Tunisia, and the Amman Summit to confront the Iran-Iraq war. Then the Cairo Summit 1990 to confront the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, which is one of the most important summits. Because this invasion resulted in a shift in the concepts of Arab national security and the sources of threat. At each summit, the required decisions were issued, but the dilemma was implementation and commitment. After the Inshas summit, for example, the Arab countries entered the 1948 war, and the 1964 summit established the Palestine Liberation Organization.

In general, the Arab summits are held as a result of the factor of threats and challenges, which is the case that ended with Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, and also the factor of external interference by regional and international powers, as we saw in the American invasion of Iraq in 2003, and the aggression of Israel on Lebanon in 2006, and the aggression on Gaza in 2008. And as strong as the Arab action is, so much What makes it possible for the tops to succeed.

In order for the Algiers summit to succeed, it requires the level of representation, the presence of all Arab countries, decisions that rise to the level of threats, commitment to follow-up and implementation, putting an end to Arab disputes, developing a common Arab military security vision, activating the Arab Defense Council, agreeing on what external threats are, and activating the role of economic summits. Because of its strength for joint Arab action and confronting global economic problems and energy and gas wars.

It remains that the Algiers summit is a fateful summit if the Arab leaders manage to restore the role of the summit institution after three years of postponement. And after many have lost hope to hold it.

It must be said that any non-Arab force will not be able to substitute for the unified Arab force in filling any vacuum in the region. Because Arab security is one, and that requires working to reform the Arab system, pushing for more integration steps, and finally adopting a common Arab vision for peace that ends the Israeli occupation and establishes a Palestinian state.

The loss of the colony is a gain for Palestine

Written by: Hamada Pharaoh

Significant achievements for the benefit of the Palestinian Arab people, their just rights, and their national cause, no matter how simple, modest, and unimportant they seem to some narrow-minded people, but they are cumulative additions on the long road, the path of the Palestinians regaining their full rights on their land, in their homeland, which has no homeland for them. Other: Palestine.

The United Nations Specialized Committee on Decolonization concluded with a draft resolution consisting of a question that was referred to the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly, with a view to voting on it next month, December 2022, according to which it includes submitting a request for an advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice, and its legal answer to two questions: :

The first is what are the legal consequences of Israel's (colonial) continuous violations of the Palestinians' right to self-determination, its long occupation, settlement, and annexation of Palestinian lands, and its discriminatory policies?

Second, how do these policies affect the legal status of the Israeli occupation, and what are the legal consequences for all countries and the United Nations?

The Palestinian struggle, in its various forms in confronting the colonial project and its occupation, whether through armed struggle, popular uprising, negotiations, or diplomatic action, is a cumulative action, with various tools that will not achieve the goal by a knockout, and the occupation and its termination of the land of Palestine will not be defeated, by a knockout. Rather, this is done gradually through cumulative steps, which constitute a loss of the colony’s balance, the decline of its influence, and the decline of its strength. And justice and titles The colony worked depending on European influence at the beginning, and then American influence later and now to undermine the status of Palestine, so that the colony and its occupation do not deserve its legitimacy like the countries of the world that won their independence and the freedom of their people, and the respect for their sovereignty, these titles: independence, freedom and respect, obtained arbitrarily by the colony At the expense of the Palestinian people, hypocrisy on the part of the Europeans, pressure due to American influence, and weakness on the part of Arabs and Muslims.

Transferring questions by the United Nations General Assembly, which recognized the Palestinian right to a state on the lines of June 4, 1967, a transfer that will force the judges of the International Court of Justice to present their advisory opinion, as previously happened on the apartheid wall, and its advisory decision issued on July 9, 2004, It stated:

- The settlements established by the (colony) on the occupied Palestinian lands represent a clear violation of international law.

- Building the wall and the bases associated with it, establishing a fait accompli on the ground.

- The wall can become a permanent danger, as a situation similar to actual annexation emerges from it.

- The construction of the wall hinders the exercise of the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and thus represents a breach of the (colony's) commitment and lack of respect for that right.

Transferring questions by the General Assembly after voting on them will constitute a political and legal blow to the colony, and a political and legal addition in favor of Palestine.

Tension between al-Sadr and al-Maliki in Iraq due to audio leaks

Baghdad - (AFP) - The level of tension in Iraq has increased between the two prominent Shiite parties, the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr , and former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki , against the background of leaked audio recordings attributed to the latter, to further complicate the tense political scene since the early legislative elections.

Al-Maliki, who is considered one of the most prominent Shiite politicians in Iraq, denied that these recordings belonged to him, and considered that they were "fabricated."

Maliki's party said in a statement on Monday, "We will not be drawn into blind strife between the people of the same country."

An Iraqi journalist published on his Twitter account five leaked recordings attributed to al-Maliki, in which the speaker, who was presented as al-Maliki, attacked Shiite forces, especially the Sadrist movement and its leader Muqtada al-Sadr, with whom he has had tense relations for years.

The owner of the voice in the recording talks about the possibility of internal fighting between the Shiite forces, describing al-Sadr as "wanting blood" and "money". The Popular Mobilization Forces also attack Maliki's allies in the coordination framework, saying that "their command is in the hands of Iran."

The leader of the Sadrist movement responded to these leaks, calling on al-Maliki to "declare a retreat and retire from political work." He called for "extinguishing strife through a joint denunciation by the leaders of the blocs allied with him on the one hand, and by the seniors of his clan on the other hand."

He added, speaking of al-Maliki, that "after these destructive ideas, he is not entitled to lead Iraq."

This tension comes in the context of an ongoing dispute between the Sadrist movement and the coordination framework, in which al-Maliki is the most prominent member, since the announcement of the results of the early parliamentary elections nine months ago. The two parties were unable to agree on a formula to get the country out of the political impasse and form a government.

After his bloc won 73 parliamentary seats, al-Sadr wanted to form a majority government in alliance with Sunni and Kurdish blocs, while his opponents in the coordination framework wanted to form a consensual government. However, al-Sadr decided to withdraw his deputies from Parliament last June, in a move considered intended to increase pressure on his political opponents.

With the withdrawal of the representatives of the Sadrist bloc, the coordination framework has the largest number of seats in the Iraqi parliament, but so far the framework has also not been able to agree on the name of its candidate to head the government.

Late Monday night, hundreds of Sadrist supporters gathered in cities in the south of the country to protest the recordings, especially in Nasiriyah, Amarah and Kut, AFP correspondents reported.

In Nasiriyah, the demonstrators raised pictures of Muqtada al-Sadr and his father, according to an AFP correspondent.

Dozens also gathered in Sadr City in eastern Baghdad, a neighborhood named after Muhammed al-Sadr, Muqtada's father, but they quickly dispersed, according to a security source.

Saleh Muhammad al-Iraqi, a close associate of al-Sadr, had called in a tweet for calm, saying, "There is no need for demonstrations regarding the leaks."

Biden will make statements about Ukraine amid the expectation that he will deliver American tanks to it

Washington (AFP) - US President Joe Biden will deliver a speech on Wednesday regarding his country's support for Ukraine, the White House announced, amid expectations that Washington will announce the delivery of Abrams tanks to Kiev in the future.

The White House did not announce the details of this scheduled speech at 12:00 (17:00 GMT), except to say that Biden "will make statements about continued support for Ukraine."

The United States confirmed until recently that it was not ready to provide advanced heavy "Abrams" tanks to Ukraine to repel the Russian invasion, justifying this refusal with issues related to maintenance and training.

Ukraine has been asking the West for weeks to give it modern tanks to confront the Russian forces.

After being pressured, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced his agreement on Wednesday to give the green light to grant Ukraine Leopard tanks, stressing at the same time that he wanted to avoid an "escalation" that would lead to a war between Russia and NATO.
Moscow denounced Germany's decision, describing it as "very dangerous".

The United States announces the lifting of the exemption granted to Russia to pay its foreign debts in dollars

Washington - (AFP) - The United States decided to cancel, as of 00:01 Wednesday (04:01 GMT), the exemption that allows Russia to pay its foreign debts in dollars, according to what the US Treasury announced, in a decision that would accelerate Moscow defaulted on its payments.

Thus, the exemption from the severe financial sanctions imposed on Moscow following its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, two days before the next payment date, is revoked.

The next maturity in the Russian debt repayment program is scheduled for May 27, and the amount is 100 million euros. This amount is the value of interest due on two issues, one of which forces Russia to pay the amount in dollars, euros, pounds sterling, or Swiss francs, while the second can be paid in rubles.

The exemption has been in effect since Western countries began imposing sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, and it had enabled Moscow to avoid default.

And last week, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that Washington had made the decision in order to "provide a time limit for making regular transfers and in order to enable investors to sell securities."

She indicated that the United States would likely suspend the exemption that allows Moscow to pay its foreign debts in dollars.

On April 29, the governor of the Russian Central Bank, Elvira Nabiullina, confirmed that "we cannot talk about default," recognizing at the same time that Moscow is facing "difficulties in paying."

The value of Russia's external debt, according to the Russian Ministry of Finance, is approximately 4,500 to 4,700 billion rubles (about fifty billion euros at the current exchange rate), or 20% of the country's total public debt.

Russia had previously defaulted on domestic debt in rubles during the financial crisis in 1998, but the country had not defaulted on foreign debt since 1918 when Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin refused to recognize the debts that Moscow inherited from the Tsar's regime after the Bolshevik Revolution overthrew him in 1917.

The Sundance Film Festival is back in attendance, with films dealing with gender identity and Iranian women

Los Angeles - (AFP) - Gender identity and Iranian women are two of the main topics that will be presented at the Sundance Film Festival , which begins next month, according to its organizers Wednesday.

The festival (January 19-29), which is held in the mountains of Utah, in the western United States, returns in attendance, after two sessions that were organized remotely.

The American festival is famous for highlighting a large number of independent productions, and this year it will receive a group of Hollywood stars, most notably Anne Hathaway, Emilia Clarke, Jason Momoa and Emilia Jones, who starred in the movie “Cuda”, adapted from the French-Belgian movie “La Famie Pellet”, which won in 2022. Oscar Award for Best Film.

As for documentaries, the festival will screen "Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields", which deals with women's sexual identity through the story of actress Brooke Shields, who gained fame at the age of twelve after playing the role of a little night girl in the movie "Pretty Baby".

In addition, the two documentaries "Judy Bloom Forever" and "The Disappointment of Sherry Height" deal with the harassment that writers Judy Blum and Cher Height were subjected to, after they touched on women's sexual identity in their work.

The harassment suffered by Sherry Height prompted her to leave the United States in the nineties of the last century.

Her book, The Height Report on Cherry Height, on the female orgasm revolutionized sexual issues.

Sundance curator John Nin notes that the two documentaries allow viewers to "see history from a different point of view."

The film "Little Richard: I Am Everything" deals with the black and homosexual origins of the prominent name in the world of rock and roll during the fifties of the last century.

John Nin explains that each film provides "an opportunity to engage with history in a completely different way" through "a pioneer".

Works produced by Iranian women or others centered around them will be shown at the festival.

The documentary "Jonam" and the two feature films "The Birthing Virgin" and "Shida" deal with the history of women in Iran and expatriate women, at a time when the country is witnessing demonstrations denouncing the authorities' violence against Iranian women.

Imran Khan demands early elections in Pakistan after winning Punjab

Lahore ( Pakistan ) (AFP) - Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan again called for early elections Monday, after his party took control of the local parliament in elections held Sunday in Punjab, the country's most populous state.

These by-elections included the selection of 20 new local deputies and constituted a test of the popularity of the former international cricket star, whose government was toppled by a vote of no confidence last April.

His party, the Insaf Movement, won 15 seats, while the Pakistan Muslim League party, led by the current Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, was satisfied with four seats, and the last seat was won by an independent candidate.

Sunday's poll is seen as a precursor to national legislative elections, which are scheduled to take place in October next year, although Khan has been calling for an early vote since his government was toppled.

"The only way forward from now on is free and transparent elections. Any other path will lead to more political uncertainty and more economic chaos," Khan wrote in a tweet Monday after the results were released in Punjab state.

Since his exit from power, Khan has held rallies that attracted thousands, delivering long speeches in which he asserted that a conspiracy led by the United States imposed the current government.

And he blames the local government for the sharp rise in inflation, although most analysts agree that Sharif inherited the economic crisis in the country, which is likely to ease with the signing of an agreement last week with the International Monetary Fund to implement the aid plan worth 7.2 billion dollars.

And the Pakistani newspapers saw that the results of the poll in Punjab came as a result of the economic difficulties in the country, which spends about half of its revenues on servicing the external debt.

In order to achieve the conditions of the IMF, Sharif was forced to remove fuel subsidies, which increased prices by 50% in less than two months.

With the results of the elections in Punjab, it is expected that the short period of rule of Hamza Sharif, the son of the Pakistani prime minister, at the head of the state government will end.

(AFP) - Tottenham Hotspur and Eintracht Frankfurt, Germany, booked their Group D tickets to the final price of the Champions League , after winning the same result 2-1 over the hosts Marseille of France and Sporting of Portugal, respectively, in the sixth and final round.
The possibilities were wide open in this group with the entry into the last round, and Tottenham settled its lead with the goal of a late victory, with 11 points against Frankfurt (10), while Sporting got third place (7), which qualifies it to enter the qualifying roundabout to the final price of the European League "Europa". Ligue”, while Marseille came out empty-handed in last place (6).

In Lisbon, the hosts advanced through Brazilian Arthur Gomez (39), but the Europa League champion last season won with the goals of Japanese Daichi Kamada (62 from a penalty kick) and Frenchman Randall Kolo Mwani (72).
Italian coach Antonio Conte was absent from the Tottenham bench after he was sent off in the previous match during the 1-1 draw with Sporting after the referee canceled a controversial goal by Harry Kane in the last minutes for offside that would have qualified Spurs to the next round before a round of the end.
Spurs suffered a setback in the first half, after South Korean Son Heung-min was hit in the head by a collision with Pemba, and he was eliminated from the match (29).
Spurs made two changes to the squad that drew in the previous match with Sporting, involving Ryan Sessegnon instead of the Irishman Matt Doherty, while Langley participated in the defense instead of the injured Argentine Christian Romero.
As for the Croatian coach, Igor Tudor, he made one change to the squad that fell in front of Frankfurt, involving Eric Baye instead of Samuel Jego, but the Ivory Coast, loaned from English Manchester United, went out injured in the tenth minute, so the Frenchman entered in his place.
Marseille pressed from the first minutes and threatened with a low header by Chilean Alexis Sanchez, which passed by the post after a cross from Moroccan Amine Harith (3).
The southern team continued its pressure, and Sanchez, who knows Tottenham well after playing for years in England with Arsenal and Manchester United, hit the first shot on goal from inside the area, which was turned away by French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to a corner (19).
Spurs suffered a setback when Son left after a collision with Mbemba, to replace him with Ivory Coast's Eve Bisuma (29).
The owners of the land continued to dominate, and then Jordan Furuto had an opportunity when he tamed a ball and hit it wonderfully with his left from the left side of the area, Lloris pushed it to a corner (33).
Marseille got what it wanted with a wonderful goal, when Furuto raised a far cross from near the place of the corner towards the post, and Mbemba rose to it high, followed by a header into the net (45 + 2).
Tottenham waited until the eighth minute of stoppage time to hit the goal for the first time through Kane, which was blocked by Spanish goalkeeper Pau Lopes with his fingers to a corner.
In the second half, Spurs pushed Brazilian Emison Royal instead of Sesinwen, and the London team looked better and opened the scoring with Langley's header after a free kick by Croatian Ivan Perisic.
Harith had an opportunity to re-advance when he hit a powerful ball centimeters above the crossbar (59).
Bosnian Sayed Kolasinac wasted a golden opportunity to give Marseille the crossing card when the ball reached him from a cross towards the second post while he was in a favorable place, followed by his head next to the post (87).
And when the Marseille players were ahead in search of the goal, Tottenham responded with a counterattack, after which Hoiberg scored the goal of confirming qualification with a shot from inside the area (90 + 5).

When Nidal Abu Aker misses Dalia and Karmel

Written by: Jawad Boulos

I needed a dose of pure and true hope that would restore some of my lost balance before, during, and after the election battle for the Israeli Knesset. I did not think long; I submitted a request to the Ofer prison administration to visit the administrative prisoner, Nidal Abu Akar, after his family contacted me and requested that I visit him to check on him.

I spent my nights, as I have lately, battling the darkness to inhale my need of air from its belly; Trying to get anxiety off my pillow. I did not notice when I fell asleep, but I remember hearing the sound of the dawn call to prayer announcing, from the mosques in the Dahiyat Al-Bareed and Beit Hanina neighborhoods, that Jerusalem is waking up to face its unknown another day. I did not sleep as well as an old man who was tired of traveling behind the mirage of justice and perverting the truth deserved. I was afraid that I would not get up before nine o'clock and miss my prison visit.

At nine, a prison service vehicle was waiting for me at the entrance to Ofer Prison; Her driver asked me to follow him in my car. We reached a spacious yard, with high concrete walls behind and in front of us. The jailer pointed to a place in the yard, and I parked my car there in front of a small iron door. Moments later, they opened the door, and I realized that I was close to the room we used to come for visits from the main prison gate, crossing its inner courtyards on foot. The warden asked me to take off my watch and my belt, to take out all metal objects from my pockets, and to pass through the electric inspection gate. I entered the gate confidently and made it through successfully. After my long years of experience, I know how to come without "excesses" or "appetizers" for these visits. I choose well-fitted "cashier" shoes, the soles of which do not provoke the sensitive gates' sensors, and I carry with me only a few white papers and a clear-cut pen so that the jailer can see the ink in his stomach.

I entered the visiting room with the eagerness of a boy looking for a place to go to in order to grow up. It was cold, but I paid no attention to it, and the concrete bench and the chair I was about to sit on were covered in dust. I did not try to remove the dust, as it is a necessity of the atmosphere.

The place was buzzing with silence and loneliness. I tried to draw the features of Nidal as I remember him and from his recent photos in the media; His face was like a dark orange camp dawn emerging from the universe's enlightenment. His hair is dark, flowing slightly forward at the temples and receding at the ends of his head. On the forehead is what looks like a fringe that makes the beholder see a smiling heart.

I tried to remember when I first began visiting prisoners of liberty in this place, but the barking of the guard dogs interrupted my focus. When I heard her barking, I remembered what my escort, the warden, said when we passed her: These dogs are wild and can only be left locked up in the corridors. I didn't ask her about the dogs job there.

I heard the clatter of keys, so I was pleased. Nidal entered and looked at me, and I felt his relief. They removed the handcuffs from his hands, so he came forward, calmly, and sat across from me. I placed my palm on the thick glass partition between us, and his palm met it on the other side. We picked up our phones and headed towards our destination. The features of his face were the color of longing and more beautiful than I imagined; His broad black eyebrows, like two right-hand daggers, crouched above two deep black eyes that insisted on speaking to me in the language of pride and joy.

Nidal was arrested for the first time while he was in the second year of middle school, and from that time he was arrested repeatedly until he reached a total of sixteen years, of which he spent a total of fourteen years as an administrative prisoner on suspicion that he was an activist in the ranks of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and because the Israeli intelligence officer told him before his arrest once. He does not sleep comfortably if Nidal is outside the prison.

We talked for a long time, and I did not hear any complaint or hesitation from him, but rather insistence and conviction of the motives and meanings of his sacrifice. He and his fellow prisoners are striving for their people to achieve their human dreams, which are simple: to live in peace with their children and rejoice as humans rejoice, if their child enters kindergarten, or their son graduates from school or university, and that they share a daughter with whom she is betrothed or married. He said this in a flute voice and with the melody of a reed, as his daughter Dalia recently got engaged while he was a prisoner.

Nidal did not seem to have reached fifty-five years of age. Perhaps this is how, with present freshness and lofty spirit, the Palestinian resists the oppression of the occupier and tames the harshness of time. Nidal and his ilk know that administrative detention is one of the harshest means of deterrence and torture practiced by the occupation against the Palestinians. And they know that the occupation, by resorting to this compelling means, wants to create Palestinian models who are helpless, submissive, weak, and desperate, so that their experiences may be examples of terrorizing the new Palestinian generations. Or as he said to me: “They want to raise the costs of those who work in national and community work in order to intimidate activists and other fighters through us.” But he added reassuringly: “I am convinced that the prisoner lives in the conscience of our society, despite the decline of many values and attempts to strike concepts True patriotism, goodness still exists with us. I interrupted him to ask him what he was doing, and he answered me seriously and with surprising spontaneity, “I work as a prisoner.” Then he added: “When I am out of prison, I work in journalism and the media as well.”

I try to catch my breath from the clarity of this conviction, especially when he told me that the occupation authorities prevented and mostly prevented him from visiting his family members, except for a painful paradox when they also arrested his son Muhammad administratively, for a period of four years, and since 2015 he began to meet him in prison; This is how it happened with his twin brother, Raafat, who also spent seven years in administrative prison.

I quietly wondered: Or maybe this is the way to reunite the angels in heaven, or at least the angels who protect Palestine?

I asked him about his dreams and the meaning of his longing behind bars? He advanced his chest a little towards the glass, as if he wanted no one to hear what he was saying, then raised his forehead and it shone like a star, and said: “My dreams are simple. I want to live with my wife and children, and to be by my mother’s side. I want to kiss my mother’s hand and her forehead and to eat together, as a simple family.” It is generous and that we rejoice and grieve together.. It is too much for a person to dream of living with his children, his mother and his family in peace and freedom?

He was silent.. I asked him: Do you regret these years? He turned his head back a little and leaned on a beam of light that was creeping in from a high window behind him, and he put his hand on the glass as if he wanted to feel his heartbeat jump out of his chest and said: “Never, never, there is no heartbreak or regret; we walk on legs of hope, and we sleep On our pillows, so that we can nurture the breath of the homeland only on it, and join our dreams with ribs in our chests and plant them as daggers in the flanks of defeats and despair. We, our teacher, have led us from eternal love and longing, and we know, with tragic certainty, that our suffering is fleeting and will one day become a mere scattering in memory, and we know Our coming days are the most beautiful, so our souls are the guarantees of our future, and it has promises, covenants, light and light.” We heard footsteps approaching us. One of the jailers opened the door and asked me if I had finished the visit? So I made him understand that I am here on a journey of spiritual healing, not on a visit to a prisoner; He went out as he entered.
Don't you suffer from this dimension? Nidal asked. Without hesitation, his voice rushed through the phone like a heavenly torrent, and he answered: “Of course I am in pain, but not from the same distance. My administrative detentions, that I suffer in pain to be deterred.. It pains me when the occupation soldiers storm our house to arrest me and handcuff me in front of my household, and they tie the hands of my two daughters, Karmal and Dalia, so I had to say goodbye to them while we were all handcuffed, then I looked at my wife, who was injured in the events of the first intifada, and I saw her tears flowing She is jostling with the soldiers to protect me. It hurts me when they deliberately hit me in front of family members while I am completely handcuffed..” He was silent for a while and continued in the rhythm of pain and said: "It is a physical impotence, but my will and theirs are steel and stronger than their arrogance." I did not raise my eyes to him, for the pictures of my household filled my eyeballs like water.

One article will not suffice to talk about a visit that I wished would not end; If I come to prison as a supporter, I will come out of it while I am full of dignity, hope and dignity.

Nidal Abu Aker - who told me that his family was expelled from a village located west of Jerusalem, called "Ras Abu Ammar" - before they settled in Dheisheh camp - represents a large Palestinian segment whose members keep, under their skin, the seed/gene of Palestinian survival; Despite the severity of their suffering from being repeatedly targeted as administrative prisoners (the number of administrative prisoners these days is about eight hundred), most of them live without regret or heartbreak. Yet they wish to sleep and wake as the sons of men do: to the cooing of dahlias, to the crowing of cocks, to the calls of peddlers in the dust of their camps, and to the bleating of sheep; To drink coffee with their wives and to call Carmel in the morning while she pampered her father on his birthday and greeted him with the phrase “I love you, Baba.” These are all the highest degrees of happiness for them.

Nidal and his comrades do not regret; But, as I understood from him before my departure, they fear that they and their children will be filled with hatred against their enemies, for hatred is not in the nature of loyal nobles and honorable freemen.

I left prison knowing that I would face the truth, feel free, and be full of hope. In the car were radio stations broadcasting news after the Israeli elections. I only heard the end of the newsletter, and it was a fleeting talk about the Arabs' quarrels and quarrels over the meanings of patriotism, dignity, and influence.

Ramallah - "Jerusalem" dot com - The Israeli Public Prosecution submitted to the Magistrate's Court in the city of Rishon LeZion, Thursday morning, a statement by a public prosecutor in preparation for filing indictments against 6 young men from the city of Taybeh in the occupied interior, for participating in the events of the Gift of Dignity in May 2021.

Israel votes for fascism and racism... and the required Palestinian response

Written by: Mustafa Al-Barghouti

We had no illusions about the Israeli elections that took place on the first of November, as it was clear that the competition was taking place between a racist right and another racist right. But what happened was worse than the worst expectations, as the rise of fascism to power represented the most dangerous characteristic of those elections, and this does not mean that Israeli governments have not carried out fascist practices before, but the rise of the Smotrich and Ben Gvir parties and their obtaining 14 seats in the Israeli Parliament to become the third The biggest force in it, and their assured entry into the government, represented a dangerous turn towards institutionalized fascism, represented by the party whose leaders follow the ideas of Kahane and the Kach party, which had previously been banned even in Israel, and classified as a terrorist movement in the United States.

Itamar Ben Gvir, who was prosecuted many times for his crimes, declared that he was emulating the perpetrator of the Ibrahimi Mosque massacre in Hebron, Baruch Goldstein, and that his goal was to expel the Palestinians, that is, to repeat what happened in the 1948 Nakba of ethnic cleansing, and calls for the annexation of the West Bank, the complete Judaization of Jerusalem and the establishment of existence The Jew inside Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Incidentally, the fascist party assembly also includes more extreme leaders than Ben Gvir and Smotrich, including the leaders of the "hilltop boys" gangs of colonial settlers who specialize in assaulting Palestinians and their property, and among them are those who burned alive Palestinians, such as the Dawabsha family, and the martyr Muhammad Abu Khudair. In addition, the group calling for the alleged building of the Temple on the rubble of Al-Aqsa Mosque now has 26 members in the Israeli Parliament.

The second thing that distinguished the Israeli elections was the rise of extremist Jewish religious fundamentalism represented by fascist Zionist Judaism and the Shas and United Torah Judaism parties. These religious parties equaled the extremist Likud in obtaining the highest votes, with an average of 32 Knesset members each. The expected ruling coalition will consist of these parties and the Likud, unless Gantz presents himself as a fig leaf for the next fascist rule.

The third and very important development is that the Zionist settler settlers who live illegally according to international law in Jerusalem and the West Bank, and whose number reaches 750 thousand settlers, have become a political force determined in the Israeli government and politics, and they will have nine members in the Knesset, and a number of ministers, including in That is Ben Gvir, who lives in the settlement of Kiryat Arba in Hebron, and Smotrich, who lives in the settlement of Kedumim, near the village of Kafr Qaddum.

As for the fourth development, it is the collapse of the so-called “Zionist left”, despite our conviction that left-wing and Zionism cannot be combined, since every Zionist party is right-wing by nature, but the failure of the Meretz party to pass the electoral threshold and the decline in seats of the Labor Party that ruled Israel for decades to the minimum means The end of an era of illusion of the "Zionist left".

What the Israeli elections also proved was the failure of the approach to flatter the Zionist movement, an approach used by Mansour Abbas and his party, which considers itself an Islamic party, with its support for the extremist government of Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid, and its recognition of the Jewishness of the "State of Israel". As this adulation only increased the Israelis to extremism, and what also failed was the appeasement approach of the Zionist movement, the current of dialogue with it, and the betting on negotiations and a compromise. What the majority of Israeli Jews said with their voices, hands, and feet, was clear without ambiguity, that they were not, and are not at all interested in a compromise with the Palestinians, and did not, and will not, allow the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

There are very serious political implications of what is happening, as Netanyahu, who is being prosecuted in corruption cases, has obtained a mandate to establish a stable government for the next four years, and this means the death of the so-called “two-state solution”, the burial of the Oslo agreement after Netanyahu killed him, and the consecration of the reality of “one state with a system.” racist apartheid", and the return of the ill-fated deal of the century, as an integrated plan to liquidate the Palestinian cause, and Netanyahu began this by announcing that he would expand normalization with the Arab environment at the expense of the Palestinians until they "come to their senses," as he said, that is, until they surrender to him!!

Before referring here to what is required from the Palestinians to face these serious challenges, it must be said that the turn of Israeli society towards extreme right-wing racism and fascism would not have taken place in this way, had it not been for the international community’s silence on Israel’s crimes, and allowing it to be above international law and above accountability. And the insistence of many Western countries on double international standards when it comes to Palestine.

There are five things that are required of the Palestinians to respond to this dangerous development: First, ending the internal division immediately, abandoning the illusions of compromise and negotiations, and the entire Oslo approach, and unifying the Palestinians in a unified national leadership based on a national approach and strategy of resistance struggle, whose aim is to change the imbalance of power in favor of Israel. This means a complete cessation of security coordination, the implementation of the decisions of the Central Council taken seven years ago, and a dissolution of the Oslo Accords and its commitments, which is the only thing that can save the crumbling authority from total collapse.

Secondly, revising the overarching Palestinian national goal, so that it is not only an end to the occupation, but also the overthrow of the colonial and apartheid regime in all of historic Palestine. It must send a clear message to the Zionist movement that the Palestinian people and its leaders will never surrender to the system of "one apartheid state" and that the Palestinians will never accept to be slaves to the apartheid regime, and that the alternative to this state will be nothing but the one democratic state.

And third, the immediate implementation of the Algiers Agreement, and giving the Palestinian people the opportunity to choose their leaders freely, through democratic elections for the National Council of the Liberation Organization, its internal part (the Legislative Council) and for the Palestinian presidency. And stop persecuting the Palestinians who demand their legitimate right to democratic elections. The Israelis have held five elections in four years, and the Palestinians have been denied any elections for 16 years. Extremist Israeli popular opinion can only be repelled by a resistance Palestinian popular opinion through the ballot box. Democracy in this case will be a tool of empowerment and strengthening of the resistance, and an opportunity to open the doors for the younger generations to advance towards positions of leadership.

Fourth, and these are the most important tasks, to put all energies and capabilities to support the steadfastness of the Palestinian people and their survival in their homeland in the face of attempts to displace and ethnic cleansing.

And fifth, to start immediately a global and Arab campaign to isolate the Israeli apartheid regime, and to classify the fascist party represented by Ben Gvir and Smotrich as a terrorist movement, and this is a completely achievable goal.

The results of the Israeli elections confirmed the transformation of the occupying power from extreme right-wing racism into criminal racism, and this is what must be confronted without hesitation.

The Prisoners' Commission warns against the immoral and inhuman decline in dealing with sick prisoners

Ramallah - "Jerusalem" dot com = The Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs warned, Thursday morning, of the immoral and inhuman decline in dealing with sick prisoners in the occupation prisons, which seriously threatens their lives, in light of the dangerous exclusivity practiced against them every day.

In a statement, the Commission said, through the follow-up of sick prisoners’ cases in the so-called Ramla prison hospital, Ashkelon, Raymond, Ofer, and the Negev, and in all prisons and detention centers, we notice that ignoring diseases and not providing treatments and medicines comes in a systematic and organized context.

The Commission added: Human justice in the era of freedom, democracy, guaranteeing and guaranteeing rights requires that the international community pay attention to hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, who are left to die, without giving any considerations to their life and livelihood rights.

It is noteworthy that there are hundreds of sick prisoners inside prisons and detention centers, living a difficult and complex reality, including 200 sick cases that need special medical care in civil hospitals that have all the capabilities.

Our elections are the best response to their elections, and the solution is in the hands of President Abu Mazen
