Putin is ready to exchange prisoners before his meeting with Biden

Hours of life in a war-torn Ukrainian town near the front line

Avdiivka ( Ukraine ) (AFP) - Civilians in Avdiivka, in eastern Ukraine, have found themselves in the crossfire between Ukrainian and pro-Russian forces since 2014. But with the start of the Russian invasion a year ago, this booming industrial city has been reduced to a deserted city.

The few residents who remained there, out of the 30,000 who inhabited it before the war, are now hiding in the basements of buildings without water or electricity, for fear that they will die in the relentless artillery fire.

An AFP team spent the morning of February 8th in Avdiivka.

- Fire and water -
- 08:39. A fire in an apartment on Komalana Street is still burning after a missile attack overnight. Thick gray smoke billows from a window overlooking the stairwell of the building and flames crackle.

There are no firefighters, and residents expect the fire to die out on its own as charred debris and shards of glass fall softly on the snow that covers the road.

- 08:42. Since morning broke, two hours earlier, residents have spent their time filling water bottles from a public pipe.

As if the threat of mortar and rocket fire from both sides were not enough, residents reported the death of an elderly woman from carbon monoxide poisoning from the fumes of a poorly ventilated wood stove.

- 09:09. Andre, 51, is preparing to leave. "Take it," he said, holding a necklace with a cross on it. "It will protect you."

- 09:28. Oleksandr Lugovskikh, 35, sits on the edge of his bed in the first-floor apartment he lives with his cat, Tosik. A dim light lights up the room and the skinny young man draws a long puff of his cigarette, unconcerned by the suffocating fumes rising from the cooking stove.

To earn a living, Oleksandr repairs saws during the day. "After two in the afternoon, the day is over. There is nothing to do. At four in the afternoon it is dark," he explains.

Outside, icy winds have dropped the temperature to minus 18 degrees Celsius. Oleksandr, a former construction worker, says the heat from the stove makes it bearable during the day. As for the night, he does not use it.

He does not understand the meaning of this war. "These are battles between politicians to show who is stronger," he says, shrugging.

- fuel -
- 10:22. Svetlana, 49, has been sitting in Avdiivka's one-stop shop since early morning amidst a pile of flashlights, shoes and solar chargers, listening to the radio.

"On average, about three clients come a day... That's enough for me to earn some money. I don't want to depend on aid," the woman says.

- 10:56. Near the bombed market, residents gather at the entrance of an apartment building. They use a generator to charge cell phones.

Outside, they hold phones up to the sky, hoping they'll pick up a signal. Sometimes they succeed.
A few steps away, 71-year-old Lyubov Stepanova gathers logs and coal. She drags a broken cart across the snow from the basement she shares with 20 neighbours.

"There were 50 of us, but many left," said the woman who worked at the Avdiivka coal and chemical products factory.

- 11:02. In Lyubov's windowless basement, 68-year-old Tetiana massages Galina's arthritic fingers on a tattered bed.

- depression -
- 12:31. Vitaly Sitnik, 55, has little time off working at Avdiivka Central Hospital, dark circles under his eyes blemished by sleepless days and nights.

He said that most of the staff left last year because of the heavy shelling. He's the only doctor left since October.

Despite the bombing, supplies are still arriving at the clinic, one kilometer from the Russian lines. The explosion of mortar shells shook the windows. He clasps his hands together.

"People are stressed out," he said. "They come and ask for antidepressants and sleeping pills. I give them, as a doctor. But I tell them: in order for you to sleep, you have to go."

Outside, he lights a cigarette and points out the ruined two floors of the hospital, of which only the ground floor is functioning.

- 13:30. The bombardment grew stronger nearby and Vitaly hurried inside. "You'd better go," he said, looking back.

Martyr child Zaid Ghoneim... his blood is still bleeding

The price of natural gas rose in Europe for the second day

Amsterdam (dpa) – Natural gas futures prices continued to rise in European trading today, Wednesday, for the second day in a row, as traders await the position of pumping Russian natural gas through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline after the end of its annual maintenance next week.

Bloomberg news agency indicated that Nord Stream 1, which transports gas from Russia to Germany, has been out of work since the day before yesterday for a period of 10 days due to regular maintenance, but there are fears that it will not be fully operational after the end of maintenance work, due to the political and economic conflict between Russia and Western countries against the background. What does America want from Saudi Arabia? ‏

Written by: Dr. Amani Qurum
A great debate among the American elite about the course of the relationship between Washington and Riyadh and the dialectic of choosing between interest and democratic values, after US President Joe Biden confirmed his planned visit to the Middle East next month, during which he will visit Saudi Arabia, after his promises during his election campaign to make the Saudi state a "pariah" because of Her record in the field of human rights and the case of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. While the visit was justified inside the US as to attend an international meeting that brings together the six Gulf states in addition to Egypt and Iraq, and denied the occurrence of a single bilateral meeting with the Kingdom's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. ‏
A severe coldness afflicted Saudi-American relations during Biden's two years in power, accompanied by intense media campaigns against Riyadh. Biden did not appoint an American ambassador to Riyadh, and allowed the release of an intelligence report blaming the Saudi leadership for the killing of the Saudi journalist, retracted the Houthis’ classification on the terrorist list, and reduced military support for the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, in conjunction with a rush towards restoring relations with Iran.
It is not the first time that the Saudi-American relationship has faced these bumps. Since the events of September 11, 2001, Saudi Arabia has been making relentless efforts and attempts to prove its fight against terrorism, improve its image in the United States, and pave its way towards social and political openness to the world. However, the case of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi sparked once again the controversy over the relationship between the two countries and raised the voice of allegations and human rights claims in Saudi Arabia. Is it possible to drop eighty years of the unique strategic partnership between them for the sake of human rights and democracy issues? Is it possible that the human rights file in Saudi Arabia is the decisive factor in the relationship between the two countries, and that the issue of Khashoggi’s killing is the one that dominates the specter of relations? The Khashoggi case took place during Trump’s era, which was evident in his slogan, “I am a friend of whoever pays.” Saudi Arabia paid billions of dollars at the time. And every day America proves that it does not oppose dictators, but on the contrary loves them and supports their regimes. ‏
And Saudi Arabia today is against Iran.. and against terrorism.. and the file of relations with Israel is open and progressing.. modernity and openness are at their peak in the country of Hijaz.. isn't this what America wants?? So why do you continue to criticize and pressure Saudi Arabia and stir up this great debate about relations with it? ‏
The possible reasons are many and mixed, and they are the same that make the Americans return to Saudi Arabia every time they feel sorry for them.. The Kingdom’s importance to the United States is greater than an issue determined by a file such as human rights: Perhaps the Trump administration’s condoning of the Khashoggi murder has doubled the Biden administration’s criticism of Saudi Arabia To satisfy the progressives in the Democratic Party on the one hand, and to reverse Trump's policies on the other hand. Perhaps attempts to make the Saudi political decision independent and change the Saudi defense doctrine have become a matter that annoys Washington. And perhaps also a method of pressure to publicly include Saudi Arabia in the path of normalization with Israel, because of its great political symbolism.. ‏
But what is certain is the repercussions of the Ukrainian-Russian war, the rise in oil prices, and the increase in inflation.. So who owns the key to global oil, taming global oil prices, and reducing the cost of gas.. It is Saudi Arabia.. and it is oil, and if oil is fine, then everything is fine..

Israeli savagery backgrounds

Written by: Nihad Abu Ghosh

The American "Washington Post" report added a set of irrefutable evidence that condemns Israel for the assassination of the martyred journalist, Sherine Abu Aqleh. It is in addition to previous impartial reports, most notably the reports of the two institutions (CNN) and the Associated Press, all of which are in addition to local testimonies and video images. And the reports of sound and weapons experts confirm, without a shadow of a doubt, Israel's absolute responsibility for the assassination of the martyr, by a premeditated and premeditated decision. So why does the occupying state deafen its ears to international condemnations and does not even express regret for what happened, and its government praises the performance of the security services even in its suppression of Shirin’s funeral, and continues the policies of expansion, settlement and Judaization of Jerusalem, which are associated with the most heinous crimes of murder and daily executions without taking account of anyone: No to the institution Legal or human rights, nor to any international body, nor to the impact of these crimes on Israel's status, reputation and international relations?

These condemnations coincide with the continued issuance of reports by objective and solid human rights institutions, such as the report of the fact-finding committee set up by the United Nations Human Rights Council, which, along with previous reports by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the Israeli "B'Tselem" organization, accused Israel of practicing crimes of racial discrimination ( apartheid) and that it is doing everything in its power to perpetuate the occupation.

It is clear that international condemnations mean nothing to Israel as long as they remain within the limits of words sent in the air, or mere ink on paper, and do not turn into practical measures, and where Israel enjoys full cover and permanent protection by the US administration, which has not only refrained from blaming Israel. Rather, here is President Joe Biden dedicating his upcoming visit to the Middle East for the main purpose of ensuring Israel's security and its decisive superiority over all countries in the region, and considering it the focal point of a new regional alliance that America seeks to build in the face of Iran. This "Middle Eastern NATO" consists of ten Arab countries along with Israel.

So, there is a set of local, regional and international circumstances that encourage Israel to continue the policies of bloody brutality against the Palestinians. The most prominent of these factors is the international complicity that amounts to Israel’s participation in its crimes through the American position that is absolutely biased towards Israel, and the European position that is strict in blackmailing the victim (the Palestinians). ) and pressuring them to change their positions, while the most that Europe offers is verbal stances and scarce and conditional economic aid, while Israel enjoys an Israeli-European partnership agreement that gives it the status of a member state in the European Union without entailing any obligations.

At the regional level, the Arab system is living in a state of disintegration, preoccupation with itself, and destructive internal wars on the one hand, or involvement in regional axes and alliances on the other, and the countries of normalization continue their infiltration into Israel without reservation, so they moved from the stage of establishing normal diplomatic relations to the stage of alliance in confrontation. enemy" was invented to justify these relations. Indeed, these countries gave Israel the badge of leadership for this new regional order that is being built on the ruins of the already crumbling Arab order. It is true that the American-Israeli ambition to build this alliance is exaggerated in its optimism in light of the opposition of some Arab countries that are candidates for joining (Iraq and Kuwait, for example) and the broad popular opposition in most of these countries, in addition to the reservation of Saudi Arabia, the owner of the Arab Peace Initiative, and the protector of the Two Holy Mosques. America is pushing him, and he finds a response from some Arab countries that tempts Israel to persist in its aggression without any reservation or calculation.

The Palestinian division remains one of the most important factors that encourage Israel to persist in its aggression. Despite all the apparent differences and partisan tensions in the Israeli arena, all Israeli institutions and agencies remain unified in implementing its expansionist settlement project, including the government, the opposition, the army, the security services, the judiciary and the legislative authority. Even civil society institutions and the media are all unified in facing the Palestinians who are divided geographically and politically and at the level of institutions and programs of the factions, each of which has its own strategy. Specifically, this imbalance is the central weakness of the Palestinian position, as it is not possible to build a unified Arab or Islamic position, and it is not possible to mobilize the forces of international solidarity and advocacy without unifying the Palestinian position and having a unified strategy that combines possible forms of resistance and mass struggle on the one hand, and the tools of political, diplomatic and legal action on the one hand. other.

The continuous Israeli crimes cannot be explained by practical, emergency justifications, such as those claimed by the Israeli departments, such as thwarting an operation here or there, or arresting wanted persons. An examination of the daily killing toll shows that children, women, and civilians who are safe in their homes and in their vehicles, and some passers-by who were lucky enough to be on the road were targeted. The Israeli killing units, therefore, this escalation is part of a political plan that adopts a comprehensive and open war with all tools, and it consists of interconnected circles that include Jerusalem and the rest of the West Bank and the blockade of the Gaza Strip, in which the tools of pressure and economic blackmail are integrated, with weapons of killing and destruction, with bulldozers and bulldozers demolishing Palestinian homes and building The settlements, the confiscation of lands, the deprivation of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, and the punishment of any manifestation of embracing the resistance. The summary of this solution is to force surrender on the Palestinians, push them to give up their national rights, and make them understand that the cost of rejecting the occupation's plans is very high. As for the repressive measures implemented by the Bennett-Lapid government, such as outbidding the right-wing forces in the opposition, it is only a partial detail of a comprehensive central plan adopted by the majority of the Israeli political forces and the institutions of the occupying state.

Spanish Prime Minister: "More than 500" deaths related to the heat wave

Madrid - (AFP) - The heat wave that has hit Spain for 10 days has killed "more than 500 people," Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Wednesday during a trip to Aragon, the northern region of the country affected by the fires.

"During the heat wave, more than 500 people died due to high temperatures, according to statistics," he added, referring to estimates of the increase in death rates published by a public health institute.

"I ask the population to be very careful... the climate emergency is a fait accompli," he said.

Spain swept through a heat wave affecting most parts of Western Europe, which led to a rise in temperatures reaching 45 degrees Celsius in some areas last week, and caused the outbreak of dozens of forest fires.

Sanchez pointed to data from the Carlos III Institute of Health, which estimates the number of heat-related deaths based on the number of excess deaths when comparing numbers with rates recorded in previous years.

The institute has pointed out in recent days that its data are statistical estimates and are not an official death toll.

Personalities who founded the Zionist entity - Baron Rothschild

Previously, we have been exposed to Christian Zionism since its roots in the sixteenth century, through the Calvinist idea, then Oliver Cromwell (17th century) and the Puritans, to the first statesman who demanded a state for the Jews, Napoleon Bonaparte, who was defeated by the Palestinian Arab Acre, to Lord Shavestbury and his cousin Lord Palmerston, the English Foreign Minister, who were Zionists, Then Moses Montefiore and his money. We will present about Rothschild in this article:

David Ben-Gurion, the Polish Jew, the first Israeli prime minister, wrote in his praise of Rothschild, saying: “I doubt if we would find in all generations of the Jewish [1] people over two thousand years a wonderful person like this who built the Jewish settlement in this homeland.”
Baron Edmond de Rothschild (1845-1934 AD), French by nationality and nationalism, Jewish by religion, contributed to the construction of the Jewish colonization of Palestine, as he was a central figure in the colonization of Palestine and the theft of Arab land, and his wealth and his family had the greatest role in Jewish colonization / settlement.

He began in the Jewish colonization since the beginning of the eighties of the 19th century, when the settlements that were built by the "Loves of Zion" organization [2] - before the emergence of the Zionist movement were exposed to a financial crisis, so his family took it upon itself to finance the first British colony for the Jews "Petah Tikvah", and he Baron Rothschild organized the first mass immigration of Jews to Palestine in 1882, and he also donated 30,000 dunums of land that he owned during the Ottoman rule in the Caesarea region to the Jews.

He left his mark on Jewish industrialization when he built the first factories in Israel, agricultural factories and power plants. In 1924, he established the PICA Company, the Association for the Jewish Colonization of Palestine.

His role did not stop at that, as his family, to this day, owns huge funds to finance various projects that work to serve the occupying state around the world. It also finances research and provides student scholarships to the occupiers of the Hebrew state in Palestine.

Abd al-Wahhab al-Masiri says about Rothschild: “The first colonies/settlements in Palestine would not have continued without his aid.” Then the Arab-Egyptian thinker referred to Rothschild's direct contact with Sultan Abdul Hamid II, and his obtaining from him permission to buy land in Palestine in late 1883 to establish a "exemplary (Zionist) agricultural outpost for his own account, which he called his mother's name, and he also established industries for settlers such as glass and olive oil, And a number of mills in Haifa, and salt mills in Atlit.”[3]

Important footnote
[1] Throughout history, there has been no such thing as the Jewish “people.” Rather, the Jews are various groups of different nationalities who embraced a different religion, as is the case with Muslims, Christians, and so on. Shlomo Sand responded in detail in his book The Invention of the Jewish "People".

2 “Loves of Zion” is a name given to Zionist associations that originated in Russia in 1881 AD; After the issuance of the May Laws, which imposed restrictions on Russian Jewish citizens there between 1881 and 1883 AD, and on the movement of Jewish immigrants from Russia, Poland and Romania to Palestine, the “First Migration 1881-1904”. The goal of the Lovers of Zion movement was to combat the integration of Jews into the societies in which they live, and to "return to Zion." It took its slogan "to Palestine" and called for readiness to immigrate to buy land there, and to help the Jewish settlement there. The movement of the Lovers of Zion was the link between what was called the "vanguards of Zionism" in the middle of the nineteenth century, and the beginning of political Zionism with the emergence of Theodore Herzl and the convening of the first Zionist Congress in 1897 AD - the Palestinian National Information Center.

Better than a thousand months

Ramallah - "Jerusalem" dot com - Bahaa Rahal - is the Night of Power, or what Muslim scholars suggest is that it is approaching to be the night of the twenty-seventh of Ramadan, while another group believes that it may be in the odd nights of the last ten days of the holy month, and because it is A night whose best is for a thousand months, so Muslims in the east and west of the earth are keen to revive it with prayer, invocation, supplication, hope, and reading what is easy from the Holy Qur’an, and for the blessing of Laylat al-Qadr in which the angels descend with the permission of their Lord. imposed on the city, but they, as every year on this day, left their homes, and determined to arrive, defying all the arbitrary measures, obstacles, and columns of heavily armed soldiers and barriers, and they established their prayers throughout the night in the vastness of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque in a chilling scene, and a vivid image that imprints In the minds, and a tear on the wall of the heart caused by this brutal occupation that isolates the Holy City and occupies it by force of arms and equipment. Lamia, and they must travel from the far reaches of Yemen to Iraq, and from Jordan, Egypt, the Arabian Gulf, Syria and the rest of the countries where people are waiting for the moment to visit the city and pray in it, but it is the curse of the occupation that stands as a barrier in a temporal circumstance that is inevitable by defeat and oppression and attempts to obliterate the city's features in service of its Judaization plans, and a global reality And a biased and negligent international, and a dull time when the Holy City and the rest of Palestine stand crucified on the stake of occupation.

Laylat al-Qadr has its own particularity this year as a whole in the vicinity of Al-Aqsa Mosque, due to the status of Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque in the Islamic faith. The entity and its extreme right-wing gangs, and because the strength of the presence of Al-Aqsa Mosque in the conscience, mind and belief stems from its being the first of the two qiblahs and the third of the Two Holy Mosques, the hearts of Muslims in the east and west of the earth tend to pray for its liberation from the invaders and occupiers, while every Palestinian who was able to reach and bypass the occupation measures and the apartheid wall draws to it. , and the soldiers standing by the force of arms and orgy to attack the worshipers, and they do not hesitate to put obstacles in the face of those going to prayer, so the eye of the occupier is on this mosque and they seek in various ways and methods to seize it, and they do not hesitate in their attempts to establish their Talmudic rituals inside the courtyards of the mosque through a series of repeated incursions that Some of them are confronted by the Al-Aqsa guards and the crowds of worshipers, but this does not prevent the intrusions of the groups of the so-called Temple, because they enter under Tight guards from the occupation soldiers.

Jerusalem, the holy city with all its religious, historical, national and patriotic dimensions, is still in the grip of the occupier, who devotes all his capabilities and tools to Judaizing it, through a series of projects and schemes that do not stop and do not end, and he seeks in various ways and means to obliterate the city’s features and the absence of the Arab presence in it, except that it was in the Night of Destiny She comes out in her best dress, while she is adorned with her Palestinian Arab spirit in a solemn scene of faith celebrating the blessed night, and with the steps of those going to righteousness, the earth rejoiced, and the air was purified from the pollution of the passers-by, and with the beating of faithful hearts the city rejoiced, and the time was adorned with the impact of a scene immersed in faith and filled with the blessings of supplication, and the voice of hope was Loud in repelling the scourge and epidemic of the occupation from the city and its people and from the rest of Palestine, just as the prayer was clear that the cloud of occupation would dissipate and the borders would be removed, so that everyone who awaits its visit with longing and nostalgia would visit the city, and everyone who waited for the moment of prayer in it, and that the Night of Decree would come next year, and it was liberated Palestine from the curse and taint of the occupation, and that extremism, terrorism and wars have ceased, and that justice, peace and prosperity prevail in the Holy Land and in the rest of the countries of the world, and that people enjoy freedom and security.

England Championship: Manchester City continues its offensive performances and leads, and Chelsea achieves an important victory

AFP) - Manchester City continued its stunning offensive performances, beating Southampton 4-0 in the tenth round of the English Premier League, to lead the standings, awaiting the summit meeting between Arsenal and Liverpool on Sunday, while Tottenham and Chelsea continued their progress in the standings by winning.

City had inflicted a crushing defeat on its neighbor Manchester United 6-3 last Sunday, before adding a clean five-goal against Copenhagen in the Champions League in the middle of the week, raising its score of goals in the local league specifically to 33 goals in 9 matches, an average of 3.6 per match.

Spanish coach Pep Guardiola's team raised its tally in first place to 23 points, compared to 21 for Arsenal.

At Al-Ittihad Stadium, City pressed from the first minutes, and its Algerian international wing, Riyad Mahrez, almost opened the scoring after two minutes had passed, but Southampton Irish goalkeeper Gavin Bazuno flew in with his powerful shot, saving his goal.

Then Manchester City's top scorer, the Norwegian giant Erling Haaland, tried his luck when he was alone with the goalkeeper, and he hit the right post (14).
City opened the scoring when the ball reached Portuguese Joao Cancelo, to penetrate into the area, dodge James Ward-Prowse, and hit a creeping ball that passed between the legs of one of the defenders and continued on its way towards the goal (20).

Phil Foden added the second goal when the ball reached him inside the area from Belgian Kevin De Bruyne, and he curled it with his left over the advanced goalkeeper (32).

With this decisive pass, De Bruyne broke the previous record for the best passer for City in the “Premier League”, raising his tally to 94 assists, after he was equal to the former Spanish playmaker, David Silva.

Southampton responded with a powerful shot from Stuart Armstrong from 20 meters, just over the crossbar (45).

And at the beginning of the second half, the Algerian international, Riyad Mahrez, added the third goal when he received a perfect ball from the Spaniard Rodri, and he hit it on the fly with his left hand, out of the reach of the goalkeeper (49).

Then Haaland added the fourth goal by receiving a cross from Cancelo, and he followed it up with a lightning strike with his left hand into the net (65), raising his tally of goals in the domestic league to 15, reinforcing his lead in the scorers’ ranking, as he was ahead of Tottenham striker Harry Kane, who finished in second place, with seven goals.

With this loss, the fate of the Austrian coach of Southampton, Ralph Heisenhuttl, is in the wind, after his team received its fourth loss in a row, after falling to Wolverhampton and Aston Villa, with the same score, zero-1, and against Everton, 1-2.

Chelsea continued its revival under the supervision of its new coach, Graham Potter, by beating Wolverhampton 3-0 at home.

The London team waited for stoppage time in the first half, when German Kai Havertz opened the scoring with a header, following a cross from Mason Mount.

Then the American Christian Pulisic added the second with a new pass from Mount (54), before Albanian striker Armando Broja finished the scoring a minute before the end of the match.

The London club dropped its guest AC Milan 3-0 in the middle of the week in the Champions League.

Tottenham regained the tone of victories after losing the North London derby to Arsenal 1-3 last week and returned with the three points from Brighton 1-0, noting that the latter snatched an exciting draw from Liverpool in the last home 3-3 last week.

Tottenham had also settled for a goalless draw with Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League in the middle of the week.

And once again, Tottenham's top scorer Harry Kane played the role of savior for his team by scoring the only goal of the match after a pass from Ivory Coast's Eve Bisuma in the 22nd minute.

Newcastle achieved a landslide victory over Brentford 5-1, including a brace for Brazilian international midfielder Bruno Guimarães (21 and 56), Jacob Murphy (28), Paraguayan Miguel Almiron (82) and Brentford defender Ethan Pinnock (90 mistakes in his team's goal added the other three goals, to climb to Fifth place.
Bournemouth came from behind at home to Leicester City to win 2-1.
On Sunday, 4 matches will be played, Crystal Palace will play with Leeds United, West Ham with Fulham, Arsenal with Liverpool and Everton with Manchester United, and will conclude on Monday with Nottingham Forest meeting with Aston Villa.

About 23 thousand people were killed due to the earthquake and 5.3 million people were displaced in Syria, according to the United Nations

(AFP) - Several children were rescued on Friday, but the hope of finding other survivors in Syria and Turkey is waning, five days after the devastating earthquake that killed about 23,000 people in one of the worst disasters in this region in a century, while Damascus agreed. To deliver international aid to the affected and out-of-control areas.

And the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees warned Friday that the earthquake may have displaced 5.3 million people in Syria. "This is a huge figure for a people who are already suffering from mass exodus," said the UNHCR representative in Syria, Sivanka Dhanapala, during a press conference held in Geneva, in which he participated from Damascus.

Meanwhile, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights called for an "immediate ceasefire" in Syria to facilitate the delivery of aid to the earthquake victims.

International humanitarian aid is flowing to Turkey, and Germany announced Friday that it would send 90 tons of materials by air, but reaching Syria, whose regime is subject to international sanctions, is much more complicated.

Humanitarian aid destined for northwestern Syria is usually transported from Turkey through Bab al-Hawa, the only crossing point guaranteed by a Security Council resolution on cross-border aid. However, the roads leading to the crossing were damaged by the earthquake, which temporarily affected the ability of the United Nations to use it.

On Friday, the Syrian government agreed to deliver humanitarian aid to areas outside its control in the north of the country, according to the official Syrian Information Agency (SANA).

The Council of Ministers announced in a statement after an extraordinary session that "the supervision of the International Red Cross and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent over the distribution of this aid, with the help of United Nations organizations, will ensure that it reaches those who deserve it."

The United Nations World Food Program requested $77 million to help the 874,000 people affected by the earthquake.
On both sides of the border, thousands of homes have collapsed. Rescue and relief teams are intensifying efforts in search of survivors, despite the passage of the vital first 72 hours, while frost exacerbates the difficulties of the situation.

Nevertheless, on Friday, the six-year-old Musa Hamidi was pulled out alive, in a state of shock, and injured in the face, amid cheers from under the rubble in the town of Jenderes, northwestern Syria, according to an AFP correspondent.
Two other people were also rescued in the town of Jableh in Latakia Governorate.

In Antakya in southern Turkey, Friday rescue crews managed, after "105 hours" of the earthquake, to pull out the 18-month-old infant Yusef Hussein from the wreckage of a three-storey building, then his brother Muhammad Hussein was pulled out twenty minutes later, according to the "NT" channel. in".

Two hours earlier, Zeynep Ela Parlak, a three-year-old girl, was pulled out of this quake-ravaged city.

The situation was exacerbated by the severe cold, to the extent that the PKK decided on Friday "not to carry out any operation as long as the Turkish state does not attack us," according to what was reported by the Firat Agency, which is close to it, according to the official in the party, Jamil Bayik. He said, "Thousands of our children are still under the rubble. (...) Everyone must mobilize all their capabilities."

Many survivors criticized the Turkish government's slow response. "I did not see anyone before 14:00 on the day after the earthquake," Mehmet Yildirim said angrily, 34 hours after the first earthquake, explaining that "there is no state, no police, no soldiers. Shame on you, you left us alone."

For his part, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan acknowledged the existence of "gaps" in the government's handling of the disaster. During his visit to the severely damaged city of Adiyaman (south), he said, "The destruction affected many buildings (...) to the extent that, unfortunately, we were not able to intervene quickly enough."

Meanwhile, the first bodies of Turkish Cypriot victims of the earthquake in Turkey began arriving in northern Cyprus on Friday, including seven teenage volleyball players who were participating in a tournament there, local television reported.

The bodies were recovered from the rubble of a hotel in Adiyaman that had completely collapsed in the earthquake. The hotel housed 24 teenagers between the ages of 11 and 14 and accompanying adults, who came from the self-proclaimed "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus", which is only recognized by Turkey.

According to the Turkish "NTV" channel, "the bodies of 19 teenagers (from the team) were found under the rubble."

According to the latest official figures, the 7.8-magnitude earthquake has so far killed at least 22,765 people, 19,388 of them in Turkey and 3,377 in Syria.

Humanitarian organizations, in particular, fear the spread of the cholera epidemic, which reappeared some time ago in Syria.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his wife, Asma, visited victims in Aleppo for the first time since the earthquake, according to the presidency.

On Friday, a second aid convoy from the United Nations entered the areas outside the control of Damascus in northwestern Syria, five days after the devastating earthquake occurred, while the "White Helmets" organization described the slow entry of aid and its insignificance as a "crime."
The organization, which is the civil defense in areas outside the control of Damascus, criticized the meager aid sent by the United Nations, which does not include equipment for search and rescue teams.

"The United Nations must apologize to the Syrian people and explain the reason for this shortcoming," Raed al-Saleh, head of the organization, told AFP, noting that the priority lies in providing "shelter, heating, relief materials, personal hygiene items and clean water."

On Friday, the Algerian government decided to provide financial aid worth $45 million to Turkey and Syria, according to a government statement.

A number of United Nations representatives pointed out that the aid stocks that the organization had in Syria before the earthquake began to run out quickly and needed rapid resupply.

The Regional Director of the World Food Program in the Middle East, Corinne Fleischer, explained that the organization has stocks in northwestern Syria containing ready-made food rations sufficient for 125,000 people, in addition to rations that require cooking that can feed 1.4 million people for a month.

"We have been distributing aid since day one," said UNHCR representative in Syria Sivanka Dhanapala, adding in a video from Damascus, "a large part of it has been distributed and supplies must be replenished as soon as possible."

"We also plan for what will happen in four, eight or 12 weeks," he added.

He also said, "When we think about eight to 12 weeks, we talk about helping to find jobs and restoring basic services in the affected areas."

The ambassadors of Switzerland and Brazil announced on Friday that the UN Security Council will meet to discuss the humanitarian situation in Syria after assessing the needs, while calls continue to expedite the opening of additional border crossings with Turkey to deliver aid.

In Jerusalem and between the realization of the state and the dilemmas of the interim solution and the division

Written by: Imad Afif Al-Khatib

It is said, “There are always two sides to the same story.” This applies to some of the pivotal stations in the liberation march of the Palestinian people, which launched a popular revolution against an injustice that was established under an “internationalist” cover and still is. The first station began based on the right to armed and political struggle and struggle to liberate the entire land and to reject all forms of "diplomatic action" because it means negotiation that leads to unacceptable concessions. On this basis, the Palestine Liberation Organization was established and the Palestinian national liberation movement was launched to preserve and protect the national identity and to prepare for the liberation of the land. The launch unites the Palestinians in all their places of residence around their legitimate representative, as he is the one who revived and strengthened the unity of identity and destiny in its most beautiful form.

At the end of the seventies of the last century, the second stage of the march began, when the political transformations in the Middle East led to the crystallization of two contradictory aspects representing the "dream" and "reality" or the liberation of "the entire land" and the "interim solution". At this point, the National Council, in its twelfth and thirteenth sessions, endorsed the importance of gaining official international recognition and joining regional and international institutions.

Here, communication and "diplomatic action" began to take on a wider space in the political struggle, with the aim of achieving political standing supported by a realistic view of the possibility of reaching an interim solution. With the beginning of the decline of the star of the Soviet Union and the uniqueness of the United States of America as a dominant global superpower, the opinion of the side that believed that the solution cards were in the hands of the United States of America and that what was required was to open channels of diplomatic communication with it.

In response to this approach, the first American initiatives were announced in September of 1982 by President Ronald Reagan, which coincided with the exit of the Palestinian national liberation movement from Lebanon battered with wounds after a legendary steadfastness and a heroic field confrontation that revived and strengthened the right of the Palestinian people to their independent homeland.

In its sixteenth session (1983), the Palestinian National Council expressed its rejection of the American initiative because it denies the right of return, self-determination and recognition of the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. This was the beginning of a clear shift in the national march, because it showed a "diplomatic" side that accepted the American initiative in principle if the conditions set by the Council were met. This session constituted a milestone in the history of the Palestinian struggle because it clearly demonstrated the other side of national liberation, reinforced by the decisions of the seventeenth session (1984) held in Amman, which included recognition of diplomatic action, including opening channels of communication with the "Jewish forces" in support of Palestinian rights.

During the session of the Palestinian National Council in Algeria in April 1987, the decisions issued by it reflected the impasse that the national liberation march had reached, with the presence of multiple divisions in the Arab community, and great restrictions on the institutions of the Palestine Liberation Organization, especially with regard to its support for the steadfastness of the Palestinian people in confronting the occupation.

A few months later, the Palestinian Intifada broke out, which unified the Palestinians and showed the ugly face of the occupation and revealed the masks of its supporters. The popular uprising paved the way for a new stage in the national march that adopted "diplomatic action" as a primary method in an attempt to save what could be saved. As for the reference to the "phased solution", it had two aspects. It could be an "opportunity" or a "trap", both of which are very expensive.

And after decades of stagnation in our place in the predicament of the "interim solution", we entered into the dilemma of division, which threatens our unity and exposes us as weak before the world. Today, as we witness the launch of a new round of national dialogue in order to end the division, we repeat our message to all the national dialogue parties that what bridges the gap between the two sides is their standing before their national responsibility and their agreement on the unity of the compass and the goal.

European Central Bank: Digital currencies are 'worth nothing'

Frankfurt - (dpa) - European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said cryptocurrencies are "based on nothing" and should be regulated to discourage people from speculating with their savings.

According to what was reported by Bloomberg news agency today, Saturday, Lagarde told Dutch television that she was worried about people "who lack understanding of the risks, who will lose (currencies), and will be very disappointed ... so I think it should be regulated."

Lagarde's comments come at a time when the cryptocurrency market is experiencing huge volatility, with the valuations of Bitcoin and Ethereum both declining by about 50% from last week's peak. At the same time, an asset class (a group of investments with similar characteristics and subject to the same regulations) is under scrutiny from regulators for the risks it may pose to the wider financial system.

The ECB president made clear her skepticism about the value of digital currencies, in contrast to the "digital euro" - a project expected to come to light within the next four years.
"My humble assessment is that (cryptocurrencies) are worth nothing, are based on nothing, there is no underlying asset that can be a safe land," Lagarde said.
"The day we have an ECB digital currency, a digital euro, I will guarantee it - the central bank will be behind it, I think it's very different from many of these things," she said.

Arms sales in the world are reaching unprecedented levels

Stockholm (AFP) - Global military spending rose again in 2021 and set new records as Russia continued to build up its military before its invasion of Ukraine, researchers said Monday, and they expect this trend to continue in Europe in particular.
Despite the economic repercussions of the Covid pandemic, countries around the world have increased their arsenals, with global military spending rising by 0.7 percent last year, according to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri).
"In 2021, military spending rose for the seventh time in a row, reaching $2.1 trillion. This is the highest number ever," Diego Lopez da Silva, senior researcher at the institute, told AFP.
Russia's spending grew by 2.9 percent for the third consecutive year of growth, to $65.9 billion. Lopez da Silva said defense spending represented 4.1 percent of Russia's gross domestic product, "well above the global average" and making Moscow the world's fifth-biggest arms spender.
Higher oil and gas revenues have helped the country boost military spending. Lopez da Silva noted that Russia witnessed a sharp increase in spending towards the end of the year, as "it happened when Russia massed its forces along the Ukrainian border before invading Ukraine in February of course."
- Tougher penalties -
Lopez da Silva said it was difficult to predict whether Russia would be able to continue spending in the same way due to the wave of sanctions imposed by the West in response to its invasion of Ukraine.
In 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea, the country was also targeted with sanctions at a time when energy prices fell, making it difficult to measure the effectiveness of the sanctions on their own.
"Now ... we have tougher sanctions, that's for sure, but we have higher energy prices that can help Russia keep military spending at that level," Lopez da Silva said.
On the other hand, Ukraine's military spending has increased by 72% since the annexation of Crimea. And while spending fell by more than eight percent in 2021 to $5.9 billion, it still represented 3.2 percent of Ukraine's GDP.
As tensions mount in Europe, more NATO countries are stepping up spending. Lopez da Silva said he expects spending in Europe to continue to grow.
Last year, the Swedish Institute said, eight member states reached their spending target of 2 percent of gross domestic product, one less than the previous year, but a significant increase from only two in 2014.
As for the United States, which topped everyone by spending $801 billion, it actually went against the global trend and cut its spending by 1.4 percent in 2021.
- 'Technological edge' -
Over the past decade, US spending on research and development has increased by 24 percent while arms purchases have fallen by 6.4 percent. While both fell in 2021, the decline in search was not as high, highlighting the country's focus on "next-generation technologies."
"The US government has repeatedly stressed the need to maintain the US military's technological superiority over strategic competitors," Alexandra Marksteiner, also a researcher at Sipri, said in a statement.
For its part, China, the second in the level of military spending in the world with an estimated $293 billion, boosted its expenditures by 4.7 percent, recording an increase in spending for the twenty-seventh year in a row.
The country's military buildup, in turn, led its regional neighbors to increase their military budgets, with Japan adding $7 billion, up 7.3 percent - its highest annual increase since 1972.
Australia also spent four percent more on its military, reaching $31.8 billion in 2021.
India, the third largest spender in the world with $76.6 billion, increased financing for its arsenal in 2021, but by a more modest 0.9 percent.

Shtayyeh: Israel is working to destroy the two-state solution daily

RAMALLAH - (Xinhua) - Palestinian Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh accused Israel today (Thursday) of working to destroy the two-state solution on a daily basis due to its settlement plans in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

This came during his meeting with the representative of the Labor Party in the British Parliament, David Lamy, in the city of Ramallah, where he briefed him on the Israeli procedures, the high pace of settlement, the daily incursions into the Palestinian territories, and the policy of killing and arrests.

Shtayyeh stressed, according to a statement issued by his office, of which Xinhua News Agency received a copy, that Britain should take serious measures against settlements and its products, considering the move pushes Israel to stop its settlement program, which is gradually eroding the lands of the Palestinian state.

Shtayyeh called on Britain to translate the British Parliament's vote years ago in favor of recognizing Palestine into effect, in order to move the stagnant waters and save the two-state solution that Israel is working to destroy daily.

The Palestinian Prime Minister said, "We share with Britain the respect for international law and international resolutions," calling for care to be taken to use the legal terminology known to some places such as the Noble Sanctuary.

Shtayyeh put the British MP in the picture of the economic situation, stressing that the crisis is the result of a structural defect in the Palestinian economy due to the lack of control over capabilities, borders and land, the decline in international aid, and the result of the continued Israeli deductions from Palestinian tax funds.

For his part, Lamy affirmed, according to the statement, his party's support for the two-state solution and the preservation of the rights of the Palestinian people.

Israel occupied the West Bank in 1967 and established settlements on it, which are considered a violation of international law. Israeli settlement is one of the most prominent files of the dispute between the Palestinians and Israel in light of the stalled peace negotiations between them since 2014.

In the same context, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates in the Palestinian Authority said in a statement that Israel does not pay attention to the European and American positions rejecting settlement, but has become coexisting with its low ceiling, especially since it does not translate into practical steps and measures.

It is noteworthy that Security Council Resolution No. (2334) was issued on December 23, 2016, and urged an end to Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories.

The resolution stipulated Israel's demand to halt settlement activities in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the illegality of Israel's establishment of settlements in the land occupied since 1967.

The Prime Minister discusses with the Belgian Minister of Cooperation and Development bilateral relations and political developments

Ramallah - "Jerusalem" dot com - Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh discussed with the Belgian Minister of Development Cooperation, Miriam Ketter, bilateral relations and political developments.

This came during a meeting held today, Thursday, in Ramallah, in the presence of the Head of the Environmental Quality Authority, Nisreen Al-Tamimi, and the Belgian Consul General, Wilfried Pfeffer.

The Prime Minister briefed the guest on the Israeli measures on the ground, including storming cities, villages and camps, carrying out field executions and arrests, from which children and journalists were not spared, the latest of which was the assassination of the prominent Palestinian journalist Sherine Abu Aqleh yesterday in Jenin, and the child Thara al-Yazuri in al-Bireh.

He continued, "This is in addition to the acceleration of settlement activity, the demolition of homes, the seizure of lands, the Judaization of Jerusalem, and the continuation of incursions, which would increase tensions and destroy the two-state solution."

On the other hand, the Prime Minister said: "We live in a state of political vacuum, as there are no initiatives from any party at a time when Israel is systematically destroying the two-state solution." Pointing out that the alternative to the two-state solution is to perpetuate the state of apartheid in which we live today, which was documented by several reports of prestigious international institutions.

The Prime Minister briefed the guest on the economic and financial situation in Palestine, which is mainly linked to the occupation measures and its control over our resources and illegal deductions from our money, in addition to the consequences of the Corona epidemic and the war in Ukraine.

The Prime Minister appreciated the Belgian support in various fields and its position in support of the rights of the Palestinian people, calling for the support of the University of Nablus for vocational and technical education.

The two parties discussed the Belgian programs in Palestine, which focus on education and vocational training, creating job opportunities for youth and promoting entrepreneurship issues, in addition to issues related to climate and the environment.

After the meeting, a memorandum was signed to launch the Belgian Cooperation and Support Program for the next five years, between the Belgian Minister of Development Cooperation, Miriam Ketter, and the head of the Environmental Quality Authority, Nisreen Al-Tamimi.

Ketter added, "We will continue, during the next five years, to work together to improve the lives of the Palestinian people, especially the youth, and empower them in these difficult circumstances. To give them a better future, we will invest in education by building a number of schools in the West Bank, Jerusalem, and Gaza, because knowledge is power."

And she continued, "We will work, through the cooperation program, to support vocational education and training schools to provide students with technical skills that will help them engage in the labor market, and we will also work to support and empower women."

Biden and the European Union declare a truce in the dispute over Airbus and Boeing
