The World Bank confirms that commodity prices will remain high until the end of 2024

Washington (AFP) - The World Bank warned in a report on Tuesday that food and energy prices, which have risen sharply due to the war in Ukraine, may remain high for years, at least until the end of 2024.

The bank said in its report that "the war in Ukraine caused a major shock in commodity markets and changed the pattern of trade, production and consumption in the world."

The authors of the report believe that "prices will remain at historically high levels until the end of 2024."

They pointed out that the rise in energy prices during the past two years was the largest since the oil crisis in 1973.

The World Bank said in a statement that "the prices of food raw materials - of which Russia and Ukraine are major producers - and fertilizers, the production of which depends on natural gas, have not been this strong since 2008."

"Overall, this is the biggest commodity shock we've seen since the 1970s," he added.

"This shock has been exacerbated by increased restrictions on trade in food, fuel and fertilizer," said Indermit Gill, World Bank Group Vice President for Equitable Growth, Finance and Institutions, adding that this raises fears of "stagflation."

As for energy prices alone, the bank expects them to rise by more than 50% this year, before a decline in 2023 and 2024.

As for non-energy commodities such as agricultural products and minerals, their prices are expected to increase by about 20% in 2022, to decrease in the following years.

And the bank warned that "it is expected that commodity prices will remain much higher than the average of the past five years, and in the event of a prolonged war or new sanctions imposed on Russia, they may become higher and more volatile than what is currently expected."

He added that this price hike entails "a major human and economic cost and threatens to impede progress in reducing poverty."

Criticism of Harvard University after refusing to award a fellowship to a critic of Israel's policy

Washington - "Jerusalem" dot com - Saeed Erekat - A group of Palestinian alumni demanded the dean of the prestigious Harvard Kennedy School (HKS), Douglas Elmendorf to resign, after the university's dean declined last week to cancel the appointment of Kenneth Roth, former president Human Rights Watch, because of his criticism in the past of the practices of the Israeli occupation authorities against the Palestinians.

Last summer, Harvard University-Kennedy College canceled a fellowship it had offered to prominent human rights activist Kenneth Roth, according to what Roth said, because his organization had previously criticized Israeli abusive practices against Palestinians.

Roth said he was not told a reason but believed it was due to his and his group's criticism of Israel, and that it was unclear why it took six months for the decision to become public, although The Nation magazine reported on the issue last week.

The son of Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany, Roth says his work has made him many enemies around the world.

"The recent decision by Dean Douglas Elmendorf to cancel Kenneth Roth's appointment to Harvard's Kennedy School is deeply wrong and shows his hostility to academic freedom and honest human rights discourse," says the Palestinian alumni statement, a copy of which was received by Al-Quds.com.

The statement accused Dean Elmendorf of abandoning his academic and moral responsibility towards society and the principles upon which free thought is based in a free society, saying, "As the body that represents the Palestinian alumni of the Kennedy School (HKS), we call on Dean Douglas Elmendorf to resign." .

"Kennedy-Harvard is dear to all of us. However, our collective experiences with institutionalized discrimination against Palestinians at HKS included the administration's support for Israeli state-sponsored violence and apartheid. We are deeply alarmed by this continued support," the statement says.

“It is outrageous that Dean Elmendorf's decision to withdraw Roth's fellowship appointment at the Carr Center for Human Rights was due to Roth's criticism of Israel's mistreatment of Palestinians. We have followed news coverage in Inside Higher Education, The Nation magazine and "The Crimson (affiliated with Harvard University) and the Guardian, as we read Roth's public statement and the positive feedback from organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union and PEN America in Defense of Academic Freedom, all make clear the motive for rescinding Roth's appointment."

The statement denounces Brigadier General Douglas Elmendorf, saying: “The various standards applied by Brigadier General Dean Elmendorf are noteworthy in that while he was revoking Roth’s appointment, the brigadier general chose to host Israeli officials who bear responsibility for war crimes committed against the Palestinians, including the crime of apartheid, which is a crime against humanity.” According to reports issued by Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and Palestinian and Israeli human rights organizations that document the reality of Israeli apartheid.

The statement notes that in light of the pro-Israel campaigns against Kenneth Roth's advocacy of human rights, "it is important to note that Roth is a prominent and respected global civil society leader. He has dedicated his career to exposing human rights abuses around the world, and has been banned from countries, including In that China and Russia, for his work in those countries."

It is noteworthy that Eric Goldstein, deputy director of the Middle East and North Africa division at Human Rights Watch, commented on Elmendorf's decision by saying, "If Harvard University feels that it has the authority to block a candidate like the famous and world-famous Ken Roth because of criticism of Israel, then imagine the horrific impact across academia." At least famous and fortunate, especially the Palestinians, who criticize Israel."

The statement demands: "We call on Kennedy School-Harvard to appoint a new dean who is truly committed to academic freedom. We also call for the reinstatement of the Kenneth Roth Fellowship at the Carr Center for Human Rights."

The statement concludes by welcoming “the invaluable contributions of human rights advocates, progressive Jewish civil society leaders, and other voices committed to the humanity of the Palestinian people. We have supported the outpouring of solidarity from members of the Harvard community and beyond, and hope that HKS will become a more welcoming institution for Palestinians and those who stand with us in our struggle than For the sake of liberation from occupation and colonialism, we look forward to the day when defending our rights and freedom will be a reason for recognition and praise, not punishment.”

At least three people were killed in a Russian bombing of Kherson, in southern Ukraine

Kherson ( Ukraine ) (AFP) - At least three people were killed Sunday by Russian shelling of residential areas in Kherson, southern Ukraine, local authorities said.

On the other hand, the authorities installed by Moscow in a Russian-controlled area in the neighboring region of Zaporizhia in the south of the country indicated that four people were killed in a Ukrainian strike on a railway bridge.

Recently, the front in southern Ukraine, where the Russian army was forced to abandon Kherson in November, has been calm compared to the front lines in the east of the country, where fierce fighting is taking place, but the shelling from both sides has not stopped, and fighting resumed this week in the Zaporizhia region.

"The enemy's artillery hit residential areas of the city," the Kherson regional administration said on social media.

It added that the bombing targeted a hospital, a school, a bus station, a post office, a bank and residential buildings.

These strikes left three dead and six wounded, including a nurse, according to the same source.

For his part, the head of the pro-Russian administration in Zaporizhia, Yevgeny Paletsky, accused the Ukrainian forces of launching "a strike with HIMARS missile launchers targeting a railway bridge spanning the Molochnaya River."

Paletsky added, "Four railway workers were killed, while five were injured while they were in the process of receiving treatment."

The bridge is located in a village north of the Russian-controlled city of Melitopol and is being repaired, according to the official.

Champions League: Real and City decide their qualification, Juventus are in a very difficult situation, and Chelsea repeat their victory over Milan

(AFP) - Real Madrid, Spain, and Manchester City, England, settled their cards to the final price of the Champions League , with two draws, while the position of Italian giants, Juventus, became very difficult after losing in Israel to Maccabi Haifa, 0-2.

In the Polish capital, Warsaw, where Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine is playing its home matches due to the Russian invasion of his country, Real settled its qualification for Group F, with a deadly 1-1 draw, thanks to German Antonio Rudiger.

Real seemed on its way to its first defeat in all competitions since May 8 in the local league against its neighbor Atletico (0-1), by falling behind until the fifth minute of stoppage time before Rudiger gifted him a tie and qualification with a header, after which he was injured, raising his tally to 10 points in the lead, four points ahead of German Leipzig, who won its Scottish host Celtic 2-0, with goals from Timo Werner (75) and Swede Emil Forsberg (84), and five against Shakhtar.

"We didn't play well, but this team never gives up. We qualified for the 16th round on a bad night, and that's good," said Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti.

And he continued, "Shakhtar changed his style of play in order to involve players who were able to cut our passes between the lines, so we had to play on the sides. But this tactic was not effective for us and when they scored, they made things difficult for us."

Real needed a draw to ensure its qualification, but it suffered two things and was close to the first defeat after three consecutive victories, by falling behind in the first seconds of the second half with a header by Oleksandr Zubkov (46) and until the last seconds of the match when German Toni Kroos raised a cross that his compatriot Rudiger met with his head and turned it around. In the net in a rush that led to a collision with the Ukrainian goalkeeper Anatoly Trubin and injured them, but they completed the last seconds.

And in the absence of his Norwegian striker Erling Haaland for some rest, Manchester City settled his qualification despite his goalless draw with his host Copenhagen in a meeting that completed ten players for an hour after Spaniard Sergio Gomes was sent off and missed a penalty kick through Algerian Riyad Mahrez, thanks to Borussia Dortmund’s 1-1 draw. With its Spanish guest, Seville, in Group G.

City raised its score to 10 points in the lead, and thus secured one of the first two qualified places, after Dortmund now has seven points, compared to two each for Seville and Copenhagen.

City's Spanish midfielder Rodrigo said, "Sometimes you have to experience this type of match. We scored a goal that was disallowed, we missed a penalty kick and it's difficult when you play with 10 men. We came away with an important point, we will continue to move forward."

He continued, "The red card changed the game (...) If we look at the way we played 10 against 11, we cannot be sad."

In Group Eight, Maccabi Haifa dealt its guest, Juventus, and its coach, Massimiliano Allegri, a near-fatal blow by defeating the giants of Turin 2-0, while Paris Saint-Germain settled for a new draw against its Portuguese guest, Benfica, 1-1, which delayed one of them qualifying for the final price.

Thanks to two goals in the first half by Omar Atzili (7 and 42), Maccabi achieved its first victory in the group stage since October 29, 2002 and greatly complicated the task of Juventus, who until now had contented themselves with an orphan victory in the previous round against the Israeli team in particular 3-1.

And Tuesday's loss in Haifa, which froze Juventus' balance at three points before his trip to Portugal on the 25th, will increase the resentment of Allegri, who received a double blow by losing the efforts of his new Argentine star, Angel Di Maria, again due to a muscle injury he suffered in the first half.

In an interview with the Italian "Sky Sports" network, club president Andrea Agnelli said, "I feel ashamed as a result of what is happening now. In this type of situation, there is no single person who takes responsibility, and I am talking here about Allegri. It is a situation related to the entire group and must move forward. No There is a culprit and the problem is not related to the coach if we fail to intercept the ball... Allegri remains as Juventus coach."

In Paris, in the absence of Argentine star Lionel Messi due to a slight injury, and in light of the somewhat charged atmosphere as a result of Kylian Mbappe’s grumbling about his involvement as a spearhead, Saint-Germain settled for a 1-1 point with Benfica, to go out tied for the third match in a row, after the first-leg meeting between the two teams (1-1). And the domestic league match against Reims (0-0).

Consequently, Saint-Germain or Benfica were unable to settle their qualification, raising their scores to 8 points in the first and second places, respectively, with a difference of 5 from Juventus and Maccabi Haifa.

The two teams did nothing until the 39th minute, when Saint-Germain opened the scoring from a penalty kick, which Spaniard Juan Bernat snatched from Antonio Silva, and Mbappe successfully ran for it, scoring his thirty-first goal in the Champions League with Saint-Germain, which allowed him to single out the record he shared with the Uruguayan. Edinson Cavani.

However, the guests managed to equalize from a penalty kick, also caused by Italian midfielder Marco Verratti, by dropping Rafa Silva in the forbidden area, so Joao Mario successfully set it up (62).

Saint-Germain coach Christophe Galtier commented on the rumors about Mbappe’s desire to leave next January, saying, “I cannot comment on it, we turn rumors into information that almost becomes a statement. I see Kylian every day, he reacted very well tonight, he scored, He created, was dangerous, and could have scored a second goal."

In Group E, Chelsea renewed its victory over AC Milan, who played most of the match with ten players after expelling former London club defender Fikayo Tomori in the 18th minute, and outperformed it 2-0 after sweeping it 3-0 last week.

The two goals of the match were scored by Italian Jorginho from a penalty kick (21) and Gabonese Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (34).
The London club raised its tally to 7 points, compared to 6 for Austrian Red Salzburg and four for Dinamo Zagreb, who tied 1-1 in Croatia, and four for Milan.
And after a bad start continentally, following his loss in the first round in Zagreb, which led to the overthrow of German coach Thomas Tuchel and the introduction of Graham Potter, who settled for a draw with Salzburg in his first match with the team, the European champion 2021 recovered, achieving two consecutive victories over the current Italian champion.

Gaza Electricity announces the repair of Israeli power lines

Five dead, including two children, following a storm in Austria

Vienna - (AFP) - A storm killed five people, including two children, and injured around 10 people Thursday in Austria, according to the Austrian authorities and the Austrian News Agency.

Three people were killed when a tree fell in the state of Lower Austria (east), while two children died in Carinthia (south), according to the Austrian News Agency.

The two children, aged between five and eight, in addition to the wounded, were near a small lake in the state of Carinthia when the winds uprooted several trees, said Melanie Reiter, a spokeswoman for the Red Cross in the state.

In other parts of the region bordering Italy and Slovenia, roofs were blown off by the wind, Reiter told AFP.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer tweeted, "Today, strong storms in Carinthia claimed two children and caused serious injuries to other people."

In June, an 82-year-old man died after landslides caused severe damage, also in Carinthia.
Austria is experiencing a heat wave and the authorities have warned of storms.
Scientists say extreme weather conditions around the world are becoming more frequent due to climate change, and will likely increase in intensity as temperatures rise.
