In a rare scene that brought life back to the northern Gaza Strip, joyous ululations and Palestinian dabke chants rose above the ruins of a wedding hall west of Jabalia camp. The ceremony, held under the slogan 'Joys of the North.. Dreams from the Rubble,' included 150 grooms and brides, in an initiative organized by the 'Ghaith' charity to break the state of sadness that has enveloped the region since the start of the genocide war.
Hundreds of citizens gathered to share the joy of the newlyweds at a location not far from the areas where the occupation forces are stationed, where the rubble left by the war turned into a platform to declare adherence to the land and steadfastness. The organizers of the ceremony explained that this initiative targeted families in the most affected areas, providing financial contributions to young people to help them start their married lives amidst suffocating living crises and a lack of aid.
Sources quoted participants as confirming that creating joy at this time is an act of resistance. Groom Yahya Abu Al-Qumsan, who lost dozens of his family members, said that celebrating amidst the destruction represents a challenge to the reality imposed by the occupation and a determination to restore normal life. For his part, Mukhtar Nimer Al-Maqousi indicated that the gathering of hundreds at this traditional wedding heals the wounds of the afflicted and sends a message to the world that the Palestinian people are steadfast and will not be broken.
This ceremony comes at a time when areas of northern Gaza are still suffering from a very slow pace in removing rubble and stalled reconstruction efforts, despite the ceasefire agreement coming into effect last October. Palestinian families face severe difficulties in securing basic needs due to the continued closure of crossings and the evasion of humanitarian obligations, making such events the only outlet for residents amidst the rubble of war.
Despite the bombing, destruction, and loss of family and loved ones, we prove to the world that Gaza loves life and creates it, and this ceremony is a covenant that we remain on our land.
