Isolation that obscures time.. Palestinian prisoners in occupation prisons unaware of the start of Ramadan

Day after day, new chapters of human suffering endured by Palestinian prisoners inside Israeli occupation prisons are revealed, where violations have exceeded the limits of physical abuse to reach complete isolation from time and place. Recent legal testimonies indicate that the policy of solitary confinement has become a tool to deprive detainees of their most basic spiritual and religious rights, including knowledge of the dates of sacred religious occasions.

In this context, lawyer Khaled Mahajneh, from the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, conveyed painful details about the قطع of communication between prisoners and the outside world. Mahajneh explained that during his representation of one of the Palestinian prisoners from within the Palestinian territories detained in 'Gilboa' prison before the court, it became clear that the prisoner was unaware that the month of Ramadan had already begun, as a result of the forced absence imposed on him inside his cell.

The lawyer recounts that when he took the initiative to congratulate the prisoner on the advent of the holy month and asked him about his fasting, he was surprised by the prisoner's indignant response: 'Today is Ramadan? No one told us it started.' This incident shows the extent of the cruelty in the occupation's procedures, which aim to break the morale of the prisoners by stripping them of their connection to the outside reality and preventing them from psychological and physical preparation for fasting.

This testimony sparked a wide wave of interaction and condemnation on social media platforms, where activists and human rights defenders considered it additional evidence of the brutality of the conditions in which prisoners live. Human rights sources confirmed that depriving a prisoner of knowledge of temporal timing and religious rituals represents a flagrant violation of international conventions that guarantee the right of detainees to practice their worship freely and without restriction.

These developments come at a time when Israeli prisons are witnessing an unprecedented escalation in the pace of torture and ill-treatment, amid warnings of serious repercussions on the lives of prisoners. Observers warn that the continuation of these systematic policies, which include prolonged solitary confinement and deprivation of basic needs, portends an explosion of conditions inside prisons in the absence of effective international oversight.
