On this day, exactly two years ago, the Israeli occupation army suffered an unprecedented historical failure, following the success of the 'Storm' attack that targeted its settlements and military bases in the Gaza envelope.
The passage of long months, on the anniversary that Israelis describe as the 'disaster', revealed their bitter and painful truth regarding the lessons learned within the army, as it became clear that the concept of 'responsibility' is nothing but an empty slogan, amid collective blame-shifting instead of individual accountability and acknowledgment of mistakes.
In the same context, Israeli writer Einav Shev stated that: 'The passage of two years since what he called the 'disaster of October 7' reveals that the Israeli occupation army has learned nothing about taking responsibility for failure and setbacks.'
Shev explained, in an article published by Yedioth Ahronoth, that amidst the uproar accompanying U.S. President Donald Trump's meeting with the occupation Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the retirement speech of General Nimrod Aloni did not receive enough attention, despite containing words described as surprising and sarcastic.
He noted that Aloni, the outgoing commander of the depth command and former commander of the Gaza Division from 2020 to 2022, spoke in his speech about two dramatic years in the context of strengthening Hamas's power.
He indicated that Aloni's speech included harsh criticisms when he said: 'I leave behind an army in which the concept of responsibility has been trampled, desecrated, and has lost its confidence in revealing its failures.'
He pointed out that Aloni himself had previously contributed to creating a 'false and destructive impression' that previous military operations in Gaza were a resounding success.
Shev added that Aloni's hurtful and reproachful words about an army 'in which the concept of responsibility has been trampled and violated' did not include an explicit acknowledgment of his personal mistakes, as he merely stated 'We all made mistakes', without announcing his resignation immediately after the 'Storm' attack that revealed a disastrous failure affecting senior officials who served during those years.
Additionally, the writer noted that: 'Aloni did not resign after October 7, despite acknowledging in his speech that he had to review himself regarding two events related to the war: the first being his refusal to go fight in the kibbutzim surrounding Gaza, and the second being his failure to activate the depth command for the purpose it was created.'
Shev confirmed that: 'Aloni's talk about an army 'in which the concept of responsibility has been trampled and violated' directs a double criticism at the army leadership, either for not taking responsibility and applying it immediately, or for its audacity in holding others accountable for the same issue.'
He considered that his speech on the second anniversary of 'October 7' reflects the 'painful truth' that the army has not yet learned the deep moral lessons from the most serious failure in its history.
The writer criticized, in his article, the existence of a Chief of Staff appointed after marketing 'huge' plans to the political leadership to defeat Hamas, which later proved to be unfeasible, and considered that the Chief of Staff has come to rely on media briefings instead of facing the public directly, even if it required his resignation or dismissal.
Yedioth Ahronoth concluded its article by noting that: 'The Israeli failure on October 7, on its second anniversary, revealed that the concept of 'responsibility' within the occupation army has not gone beyond being an empty slogan, whose loopholes are used to avoid confronting the catastrophic decisions coming from the political level, driven by partisan considerations unrelated to the war.'
The concept of responsibility within the occupation army has not gone beyond being an empty slogan devoid of content.
