The Israeli historian Fania Oz-Salzberger warned that Israel is threatened by internal collapse more than any external threat. She highlighted the sharp internal division in Israel between the "moderate and liberal" camp on one side, and the "far right" led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his allies on the other.
She clarified the goals of each camp, stating that the far-right seeks to occupy Gaza, displace Palestinians, and settle Jews in their place, and that they are driven by a religious ideology aiming to "build the temple." She added that this camp does not care about human costs or human values.
As for the second camp, the "secular moderates and liberals," they aim for a peaceful settlement in the "shared homeland of Israel/Palestine," and they are advocates of peace, but they are a silent minority. She believes that "the real Israel is not its current government, but its democratic civil society, which is the base of the second camp."
The true friends of Israel are invited to support the Israeli civil society striving for peace and democracy.
