The families of Israeli prisoners held in the Gaza Strip held a press conference in Tel Aviv, where they emphasized that those who want to free their children cannot occupy Gaza. They pointed out that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is placing obstacles to concluding a prisoner exchange deal.
This conference came at a time when pressure is increasing on the Israeli government to move forward with a deal that guarantees the release of the prisoners. Netanyahu has instructed to begin immediate negotiations for their release, while continuing his plan to occupy what remains of the Gaza Strip.
A relative of the prisoners confirmed that Netanyahu continues the war under the pretext of confronting Hamas, despite the possibility of signing an agreement that would return dozens of prisoners, but he is placing obstacles in the way. They noted that those seeking to recover the detainees cannot drag the army into an invasion of the territory.
Another relative warned that the continuation of the war means more loss of life, pointing out that any military operation to control Gaza will eliminate the chances of a deal. They called on the Israeli community to take to the streets in large numbers to pressure for an agreement.
A recent poll showed that 72% of Israelis support concluding a prisoner exchange deal with Hamas, while 62% expressed distrust in Netanyahu's government. A third relative of a prisoner confirmed that ending the war and signing a deal is the only way to bring their children back.
Israeli estimates indicate that Hamas is holding 50 prisoners, including 20 alive, while it holds more than 10,800 Palestinians in its prisons, amid accusations of torture and medical neglect. The proposed plan includes the redeployment of Israeli forces near the border to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid.
Despite this, Tel Aviv continues its military plan to occupy what remains of the Gaza Strip, starting with the city of Gaza by displacing its residents, before carrying out incursions into the neighborhoods. Since October 7, 2023, Israel, with American support, has committed genocide in Gaza, resulting in thousands of martyrs and injured.
Those who seek to recover the detainees do not drag the army into an invasion of the territory.
