Netanyahu: I hope to make an announcement about the hostages in Gaza "today or tomorrow"

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed hope on Monday to make an announcement regarding the hostages held in Gaza "today or tomorrow," after Hamas announced its acceptance of a ceasefire proposal from mediators.

"I really hope we can make an announcement about the hostages, if not today, then tomorrow," Netanyahu said in a video broadcast on his Telegram channel.

A Palestinian official said Monday that Hamas had agreed to US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff's proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza. However, an Israeli official denied that the proposal came from Washington, adding that no Israeli government could accept it.

Witkov also rejected the idea that Hamas had accepted his offer for a hostage release and ceasefire in Gaza, telling Reuters that what he saw was "completely unacceptable" and that the proposal under discussion differed from the one he had put forward.

On March 18, Israel effectively ended the ceasefire agreement reached with Hamas in January and continued its military campaign in Gaza. Hamas and allied factions began firing rockets and launching attacks two days later.
