ISLAMABAD (Xinhua) - Pakistan is witnessing a continuous increase in dengue cases amid the recent outbreak of the disease due to the ongoing floods in the South Asian country.


And 386 new cases of dengue fever were reported across the southern province of Sindh in the past 24 hours, according to the provincial health department Sunday evening, noting that the worst-hit area is Karachi, the provincial capital and largest city in the country, which reported 349 cases. The number of dengue cases in September in Sindh rose to 3,020, bringing the local total to 5,589 this year.


Moreover, 166 people were diagnosed with the disease in the northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the past 24 hours, the provincial health department reported Sunday evening, bringing the total number of active cases in the province to 1,356.


The eastern Punjab province reported 191 new cases in the past 24 hours, the provincial health authorities said Sunday morning.


The city of Rawalpindi recorded 84 new cases, followed by the capital, Lahore, with 60 cases.


The total number of cases in Punjab this year rose to 3,288.


The country's capital, Islamabad, reported 57 new cases over the past day, bringing the total number of cases in the city to 1,388 this year, according to health authorities.


In response to the high level of concern of cases in the country, the Pakistani government has launched a campaign to combat dengue, which includes promoting public awareness, and has taken special measures in hotspots to curb the spread of the disease.
