Fierce Russian missile attack shakes Kyiv, people trapped under rubble

The Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, woke up at dawn today, Monday, to the sound of more than ten violent explosions that shook the city, coinciding with the sounding of air raid sirens warning of imminent missile attacks. These rapid field developments come just hours after warnings issued by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about Moscow's preparations to launch a large-scale military operation.

Field sources confirmed that the Russian attack directly targeted residential areas, with a building in the historic Podil district suffering severe damage as a result of the shelling. The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, indicated that rescue teams are trying to reach residents trapped under the rubble on the upper floors of the targeted building, amid fears of casualties.

In a related context, the military administration in Kyiv announced that Russian forces used ballistic missiles in their latest attack, which led to the immediate activation of air defense systems. Debris from intercepted drones fell in various parts of the capital, prompting authorities to urge citizens to remain in shelters until the danger passes.

Intelligence information, on which President Zelensky relied, indicates that this escalation represents the beginning of a new wave of intense Russian attacks. For more than four years, Russia has continued to adopt a strategy of long-range air strikes, targeting urban centers and vital infrastructure in various Ukrainian cities.

On the other hand, Ukrainian operations have not stopped at defense; Kyiv has recently intensified its attacks using long-range drones deep inside Russian territory. These strikes have primarily focused on fuel depots, energy facilities, and military targets to undermine the logistical capabilities of the Russian army.

In this context, official sources in the Russian-controlled Crimean Peninsula reported a Ukrainian attack targeting energy infrastructure near the city of Sevastopol. This targeting led to a temporary power outage in the city, according to Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Moscow-appointed governor.

Razvozhayev explained that the attack, which he described as 'aggressive,' hit vital facilities, necessitating the intervention of emergency teams to restore electricity. These mutual strikes reflect the Ukrainian side's determination to move the battle into Russian territory and areas annexed by Moscow, in response to the destruction of Ukraine's energy grid.

These ongoing confrontations are part of the deadliest conflict on the European continent since the end of World War II, with the pace of violence escalating daily. With continued mutual shelling, the humanitarian suffering of civilians on both sides of the border is increasing, in the absence of any immediate prospect for a political solution or ceasefire.

There are people trapped on the seventh to ninth floors of the targeted residential building in the Podil district.
