Jordan strongly condemned on Saturday the freezing of the accounts of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in occupied Jerusalem, considering it a blatant violation of the historical and legal status in the city. The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that these actions represent an assault on Islamic and Christian sanctities in Jerusalem.
In an official statement, the ministry expressed the kingdom's absolute rejection of the illegal Israeli measures, noting that these assaults come in the context of a continuous series of violations faced by Palestinian cities and their sanctities in occupied Jerusalem. It emphasized that these actions constitute a flagrant violation of international law and international humanitarian law.
The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that there is no Israeli sovereignty over the West Bank and its sanctities, calling on the international community to fulfill its legal and moral responsibilities regarding these violations. It also demanded the immediate obligation for Israel to cease its aggression against the Gaza Strip.
In a related context, the ministry called for an end to the illegal unilateral measures taken by Israel in the occupied West Bank, which threaten the rights of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state on their national soil. These calls come at a sensitive time as Israeli violations are increasing.
On another note, the Presidential Committee for Church Affairs in Palestine confirmed that the Israeli occupation authorities have frozen the Patriarchate's accounts and imposed exorbitant taxes on its properties, threatening its ability to provide its spiritual and humanitarian services.
The committee pointed out that these steps represent a blatant violation of the existing historical status and a flagrant violation of international law and applicable agreements. The churches also confirmed that Israeli authorities facilitate the seizure of church properties by settlement groups in the city, complicating the situation further.
In recent years, Israeli authorities have intensified their measures by demanding historical churches in Jerusalem to pay taxes, raising significant concerns about the future of these institutions and their role in Palestinian society.
Jordan rejects the illegal Israeli measures and emphasizes the necessity of respecting the historical status in Jerusalem.
