Dear Line announces the disbursement of European aid in favor of Palestine

Ramallah - "Jerusalem" dot com - The President of the European Commission, von der Leyen, announced today, Tuesday, the disbursement of European Union aid in favor of supporting the Palestinian people and the government treasury for the year 2021.

Dear Line indicated in a press conference with Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh in Ramallah after she arrived there to meet with him, that the European Union will continue for many years as it was before, and that it is considered the largest donor to the Palestinians with about 600 million euros annually.

This is important, she said, because EU funding supports people, especially the most vulnerable, and helps create conditions for economic opportunity, for example, by enabling access to clean water and reliable energy supplies.

She added: Palestine is now slowly recovering from the pandemic, but it is suffering from the consequences of what it described as "Russian aggression against Ukraine."

She referred to what she described as "Russian aggression" and its devastating impact on food prices and supplies, pointing to Palestine's dependence on Ukrainian grain imports.

She said: The situation has become very difficult now, and the European Union stands with you, and we have mobilized 25 million euros to improve food security in Palestine.

She indicated that she would discuss the peace process with the Palestinian Prime Minister, welcoming all efforts made to achieve peace.

She said: We will remain committed to the negotiated two-state solution, a solution that gives the Palestinian people, especially the youth, the same rights and capabilities as others in the region, that is, an independent, democratic, and viable Palestine living side by side in peace with Israel.

She expressed regret over the death of journalist Sherine Abu Aqleh, stressing the European Union's strong condemnation of her murder, calling for a comprehensive and independent investigation.

What does the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China mean for the world economy?

BEIJING (Xinhua) -- At the week-long 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) that concluded Saturday in Beijing, a blueprint for China's future development was drawn up.

At a time when the global economy is facing a difficult situation this year, with likely even more difficult prospects next year, China's economic outlook holds global significance. While expressing confidence in China's future growth, business communities around the world believe that China's innovation-driven modernization and growth move will inject more certainty into the global economy.
- Quality development is beneficial to all
Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, said while delivering a report at the CPC congress that China will accelerate the establishment of a new development pattern and pursue high-quality development.

"We must fully, correctly and comprehensively implement new development thinking, adhere to the direction of reform in the socialist market economy and high-level openness to the outside, and accelerate the establishment of a new development pattern that takes the domestic macroeconomic cycle as its basis and is characterized by mutual reinforcement between the two domestic economic cycles," Xi said. and international.”

Expressing deep admiration for the remarks, Weichai Kinchong Choi, senior vice president of leading Thai bank Kasikornbank, said he can see China's future development direction is more focused on high-quality sustainable development, adding that "this is good news for Thailand and other neighboring countries."

He noted that in the past few years, many Chinese high-tech companies have set up factories in Thailand, which is exactly what Thailand needs, noting that they have helped the Thai economy to transform and modernize, and enhance its competitiveness.

Over the past decade, China's GDP has come to account for 18.5 percent of the global economy. China has become a major trading partner of more than 140 countries and regions, leading the world in the total volume of trade in goods. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, China, which has managed to coordinate the fight against the pandemic and continued economic development, has been maintaining the stability of global supply chains and industry, while continuing to advance the global economic recovery.

Moreover, its development is not achieved at the expense of the environment. Instead, China is striving to make its development greener and more sustainable. In pursuit of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, the country has reduced its carbon emission intensity by 34.4 percent over the past 10 years, vowing to peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060.

According to Chen Honghuang, global executive vice president of German multinational software company SAP SE and president of SAP Greater China, China's green development will profoundly change the global landscape in the fields of energy, environment and economy.

"Chinese companies are using digital technology to make carbon emission data transparent and quantifiable, and promote the balance between green development and commercial development," Huang said.

Meanwhile, China's renewed commitment in the report of the CPC congress to promoting high-level opening-up also struck a chord with the international business community. The success of US automaker Tesla in China demonstrates Beijing's determination to continue opening up.

Tesla Vice President Tao Lin said that thanks to the Chinese government's efforts to facilitate foreign investment, Tesla has become the first wholly foreign-owned car company in China, adding that the US company seeks to further expand its presence in the Chinese market.

German heat exchanger company "Kelveon (China)" started operations in China more than 20 years ago. Zheng Wenwu, general manager of the company, said doing business in China has become easier.

Referring to China's efficient market mechanism and standardized administrative process that is convenient and fast, Cheng said changes over the past years have reduced costs for companies, facilitated market access, and helped companies adapt to international rules, which has benefited companies' operations.

Chinese style update means more opportunities

Chinese style modernization, a key term defining China's journey to national rejuvenation, and another buzzword in the CPC report, has sparked heated debate in both domestic and overseas business communities.

It contains elements common to modernization processes in all countries, but more importantly, it incorporates characteristics of the Chinese context. It is modernization involving a large population, common prosperity for all, material and cultural-moral progress, harmony between people and nature, and peaceful development.

For entrepreneurs in many parts of the world, Chinese-style modernization means more opportunities.

Jose Antonio Hidalgo, former president of the Ecuadorian China Chamber of Commerce, said that Chinese-style modernization will generate positive impact in the global context, especially for Ecuador's agri-food sector.

"It is an opportunity for us because middle-class consumers (in China) will need excellent quality agricultural food and will look for it in countries like ours," he said.

In 2021, China announced that after eight years of hard work between late 2012 and late 2020, the country had lifted the last 98.99 million poor rural people living below the current poverty line out of poverty, writing off all 832 and 128 poor counties and villages. Alpha straight from the poverty list. And now the country has the largest middle-income class in the world -- 400 million people. This means huge potential for consumption.

Hamdi Al-Tabbaa, head of the Jordanian Businessmen Association, also sees opportunities in the Chinese path towards modernization.

Al-Tabbaa said that China's continuous efforts to improve people's living standards mean a further expansion of the middle-income class and modernization of the consumption structure, which will provide more development opportunities for global companies.

From opening the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the New Development Bank to taking the lead in implementing the United Nations' sustainable development agenda, China has always shared its development gains with the rest of the world.

Woody Guo, senior vice president and managing director of Herbalife Nutrition in China, said the CPC report underscores the certainty of the Chinese market in the face of global market uncertainty, and makes foreign companies feel reassured about their development in China.

Sarah Vermeulen-Anastasi, head of group communications at Swiss technology group Oerlikon, said that Chinese-style modernization "will provide more opportunities and possibilities, not only in terms of market growth, but also in terms of employment," adding, "We will be able to attract More engineers as we have more choice of new technologies."

Innovation inspires a new impetus

As China revitalizes its economy, it has made innovation a top priority in its planning. The World Intellectual Property Organization said that the country ranked 12th on the 2021 Global Innovation Index, up from 34th in 2012. It ranked first among middle-income economies.

"We should take science and technology as our primary productive force, talent as our primary resource, and innovation as our primary engine for growth," Xi said in the report.

"It's all about innovation," said Stephen Perry, chairman of the British 48 Club Foundation, adding that China is forward-looking, as in every sector, and China has a dynamic of "wanting to know where the world is going."

In the midst of the innovation drive, the number of Chinese companies included in the "Fortune Global 500" list has increased, with 145 Chinese companies reaching the list in 2021, up from 95 in 2012, as part of a continuous increase for 19 consecutive years.

In terms of communication infrastructure, the country has built the world's largest 5G network, with a total of 1.43 million network base stations installed across the country by the end of 2021, accounting for more than 60 percent of the world's total.

Supported by technological progress, China has accelerated the construction of high-speed transportation networks. With the most advanced high-speed rail network in the world, China now has more than 40,000 km of high-speed rail lines in operation.

Oswaldo Navarro of Jalisco, an agricultural-producing state in Mexico, purchased several pieces of farming and land-processing equipment from China.

He told Xinhua that the seed cleaning machine he imported from China has a daily cleaning capacity two to three times that of equipment from other countries, which saves a lot of time and cost.

Navarro said China's increasing efforts in science and education will help turn scientific and technological achievements into productive achievements.

Hicham Charfi, an Algerian businessman working for a consulting company in the field of technology and industrial innovation, said that China shares advanced development models and achieves economic integration with other countries, which improves the well-being of people in various countries through advanced technologies.

He said that Chinese innovation will appear in many areas important to human society in the future.

Lebanon's banks begin a strike on Monday

BEIRUT - (Xinhua) The Board of Directors of the Association of Lebanon 'class='highlighted-tag'> announced today, Friday, that the banks operating in the country will start a strike from next Monday, in protest of the arrest of the chairman of the board of directors of a bank.

The move of the Association of Banks comes after the arrest of the chairman of the board of directors of a bank, who was released on a large financial guarantee, after investigations that lasted nearly 24 hours.

A statement by the Association of Banks said that the general assembly of banks, which will be held on the tenth of August, is expected to decide the position it deems appropriate regarding the continuation of the strike.

The statement stated that the association's board of directors discussed, in a meeting held yesterday, the issue of "malicious lawsuits" against banks, describing some of the rulings issued by references that are pre-selected from the plaintiffs as "arbitrary and populist."

The association's statement said that it "does not understand the reasons for the arrest of the chairman of a bank's board of directors due to a criminal complaint against him before the Appeal Public Prosecution in Mount Lebanon by a preferred shareholder who reproaches him for not distributing profits to her at a time when the bank did not achieve profits to distribute."

The statement considered the strike as "a general warning that is an invitation to all to deal seriously and responsibly with the current situation with the aim of moving towards real recovery."

The council's statement confirmed that the banks "tried as much as possible to deal flexibly" with what it described as "abnormal situations," considering that they "reached an unacceptable level and could no longer bear these situations."

He was surprised by the statement of the Association of Banks, "ignoring some of those charged with respecting the law and the content of its provisions, as if the application of the law had become optional for them and not obligatory."

And he denounced the taking of some references, "repressive measures that deal with people's freedoms and dignity, harm their reputation, and expose the relations of local and foreign banks, which causes great harm to bankers and depositors."

The statement pointed to "the impossibility of applying international accounting rules in Lebanon at the present time due to the general economic conditions that are the responsibility of the state that brought us to it," pointing to inflation and the non-unification of the national currency exchange rate.

The official exchange rate for the dollar in Lebanon is 1515 Lebanese pounds, while it is spent at a value of 8 thousand pounds for the dollar of the bank deposit, and about 24 thousand on the “exchange” platform of the Central Bank, while it exceeds 30 thousand on the black market.

Since 2019, Lebanon has been witnessing an economic collapse, which the World Bank ranked among the worst in the world since the middle of the last century, as the country suffers from political, economic, living and health crises, which were embodied in the scarcity of foreign currency, the collapse of the value of the Lebanese pound, the imposition of restrictions on withdrawing bank deposits, and the government stopping paying external and internal debts. .

The repercussions of the interlocking crises have led to a rise in the poverty rate in the country to 82%, an increase in unemployment, inflation, and a shortage of fuel, medicines and infant formula.

North Korea ends the obligation to wear masks

Seoul - (AFP) - North Korea has ended the mandatory wearing of masks in almost all places, the country's official news agency reported Saturday, days after leader Kim Jong Un declared "victory" over Covid.

"The compulsory wearing of masks has been lifted in all places except for front-line areas and border cities and counties, given that the entire country has become an epidemic-free zone," North Korea's official news agency reported.

And North Korea declared a "brilliant victory" over Covid earlier this week, just months after announcing its first cases in May. Social distancing measures have also been lifted in all regions, except for border areas, according to the agency.

The announcement came after Pyongyang this week accused Seoul of causing an outbreak of the coronavirus in the country and threatened to "eliminate" the South Korean authorities if necessary.

Nevertheless, North Korean authorities have recommended that people with symptoms continue to wear masks, and North Koreans to "stay alert" for "anything abnormal", apparently in reference to balloons being launched from the South.

The Supreme Judicial Council suspends work in the courts due to a sit-in by al-Sadr's supporters in front of its building in Baghdad

BAGHDAD - (Xinhua) - Iraq 's Supreme Judicial Council announced today (Tuesday) the suspension of all courts, in protest against a sit-in organized by supporters of the prominent Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr, in front of his building in the fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad.

The Supreme Judicial Council said in a statement that it held an online meeting this morning with the Federal Supreme Court, following an open sit-in by Sadrist demonstrators in front of the council to demand the dissolution of the Iraqi parliament by "pressuring the Federal Court to issue a decision in the state order and sending threatening messages over the phone to put pressure on the court."

"The meeting decided to suspend the work of the Supreme Judicial Council and its affiliated courts and the Federal Supreme Court, in protest against these unconstitutional and illegal actions," the statement added.

The Supreme Judicial Council held the government and the political party behind this sit-in, in reference to the Sadrist movement, legal responsibility for the consequences of this behavior.

Hundreds of Sadrist supporters set up tents this morning in front of the Supreme Judicial Council building on the western side of the Green Zone in central Baghdad.

This development comes as al-Sadr's supporters have been organizing, since July 30, an open sit-in around the Iraqi parliament in the Green Zone to demand the dissolution of the parliament, early elections, political reform, the trial of the corrupt, the overthrow of Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, the candidate of the Shiite coordination framework for the next government, and the formation of a national majority government.

On the other hand, supporters of the Shiite coordination framework have been organizing a sit-in at the southern gate of the Green Zone since August 12.

Since the legislative elections were held on the tenth of last October, Iraq has been going through a political crisis that is embodied in the suspension of Parliament sessions after thousands of al-Sadr’s followers stormed his headquarters in the heavily fortified Green Zone, and the failure to elect a new president for the country, and calls against the Sadrist movement and the Shiite coordination framework to demonstrate, and the dispute over shape of the next government.

They pierce their bodies with sharp tools on the occasion of the Thai "Soul Purification" festival

Phuket (Thailand) (AFP) - Smells of antiseptics and incense mingle on the streets of Phuket, Thailand, as the Vegetarians' Festival, famous for its procession of followers of a religious and philosophical sect, pierces their cheeks and lips with knives, needles and other types of sharp objects.

The festival, which takes place on the tourist island in southern Thailand, dates back to the nineteenth century, after a Chinese band that was performing in the region in 1825 was poisoned as a result of eating meat.

According to the prevailing story, after this incident, the group adopted a vegetarian diet, to purify its members, who pierced their cheeks with rods of various kinds in a ritual specific to the Taoist sect.

"People who make vows should pierce their bodies to express their gratitude to the gods and to ward off bad luck," says Chitsanuvong Tankungkwe, an 18-year-old spectator.

"I was able to clear my mind and focus on my work," said Tepakorn Kerdkla, 62, as he waited for the procession to begin.

The descendants of the Chinese community in Phuket celebrate the memory of their ancestors during the nine-day "Nine Emperor Gods" festival, during which they refrain from eating meat.

As the sun rises on the tourist island, drums and bells are heard and incense is smelled, signaling the start of the festivities.

Once the celebrants leave the Jorsugungnaka shrine, the nurses keep a close eye on the items chosen by the participants themselves, which can be skewers, long swords, or even model boats.

Firecrackers are set off as the procession, which includes hundreds of participants, passes to the beat of traditional music broadcast through loudspeakers in the streets of the city.

"The festival has been suspended for a few years, so this year's festival was very popular," said Rabiban Naknakhon, one of the participants.

And a large number of participants appear in a state of complete unconsciousness before they cut themselves in a move that is supposed to relieve their pain.

The festival is expected to attract thousands of visitors to the region, which constitutes an opportunity for the Thai tourism sector, which has been severely affected by the Corona pandemic since 2020.

Hamas and the Decision to Return to Syria: Risks and Repercussions!!

From the inspiration of the homeland (14).
Hamas and the decision to return to Syria:
Risks and repercussions!!
Dr.. Ahmed Youssef

In the context of opinion and other opinion, the Brotherhood’s councils are not devoid of intense discussions these days about what is rumored about the desire of some Hamas leaders abroad to return to Syria, in the context of calculations that, unfortunately, seem to be their primary motive. The process in its aspect related to principles and morals seems embarrassing, and it will draw a lot of criticism on the movement on the one hand, and a loss of confidence in the Islamic street on the other hand, as there are those who see in this step that it is hasty and useless at present, and it is If it takes place, it is nothing more than a reckless adventure for some of the brothers in leadership who were seduced by the manifestations of leadership!! One of them no longer cares about the opinion of the majority of their brothers inside and outside, not even the voices of many of the nation's scholars who spoke and sent their warnings about the dire consequences of such a step and its impact on the status and "credibility" of Hamas. As a national liberation movement with an Islamic flag
It is unfortunate that some of the leaders of the movement abroad are still arguing and insisting on their opinion, and they did not pay attention to what all these scholars, preachers and Islamic personalities say, whose opinions and statements made their way to the media satellites and social media, in what constitutes Great concerns about the possibility of the global Islamic incubator retreating in its endorsement and support for Hamas, and exposing the image of its valiant resistance to the occupation to challenge and distortion.
The position on the Syrian regime has not changed much; Because the regime, in its essence, “has not been changed or altered,” and that the Syrian people, who embraced Hamas and provided it with more financial and moral support than the Gulf states combined, deserve that we at least take into account their feelings, and not lose sight of what befell them. Tragedies and sorrows, and he still suffers to this day from the oppression of the ruling regime in his country, and he expects his brothers in the Hamas movement to take into account their grievances, and not to be an arrow in the side, by standing by those who oppressed them and caused what happened to them in terms of calamity and a humanitarian catastrophe. It paid millions of them to emigrate and be homeless outside the country
There is no doubt that such a step, and other statements that preceded it by some leaders in the movement, opened the door for many Syrians, as well as those sympathetic to their grievances in the Arab and Islamic worlds, whose intentions we have no doubt about the purity of their intentions. Some of them abuse Hamas in accusing Hamas of becoming a tool To the allies of the Syrian regime, and those whom these displaced Syrians accuse of being accomplices in the crime that befell their homes, and that Hamas - this great Islamic movement - has lost the vision and the correctness of its position by lining up with this alliance, and in a way that may distance it from the literature of values and principles that Its slogans are evident, and its fragrant history of struggle is embellished, and it is dependent on calculations from the narrow interests of some, and what that means in terms of “killing” or a stab at everything that the nation’s public believed to be right, purity and legitimacy in its support for Hamas and its popular movement in fighting the oppressors of The attacking Zionists...
The question that arises is: Why all this haste in the statements that we hear from some of our brothers in the movement, who push flimsy pretexts for rapprochement with an unjust regime that has not yet reconciled with its people, and is still isolated regionally and internationally. ‏
What are some Hamas leaders abroad afraid of, as if they are begging to return to Syria, in order to appease some of the regime's allies in the region? ‏
And the other question that imposes itself as well: What is the reaction of the Islamists - who are in the millions around the world - towards this hasty step in relying on some of the leaders of the movement to those who wronged? Is it sufficient to say that it is the constraints of interest and the “rule of necessity” that imposed this on them, or that it is the need for money and a supporter, and that it is nothing more than a step to secure a “safe reward” if the days betrayed them, and they were expelled from the fortresses of estrangement? to new constraints.
In the past, our secular opponents used to accuse us of being "politicians" and our response was that we are people of principles, and our politics are interests governed by principles and values. Unfortunately, today we look like the one that untangled its flirtation. Since our relations with the Islamic whole are beginning to crack, and the "credibility" that was our capital in all Islamic arenas is today questioned and questioned.
We do not object - in principle - to the idea of returning to Syria, as it is a sister country that embraces thousands of our people. His people, and there are millions of displaced persons and refugees among them who seek refuge in God from those who wronged them or colluded with those who wronged them.
Those who follow the media of the Syrian regime will not find that they welcome the step that some Hamas leaders are taking, and that the atmosphere of the official discourse in the media is in the form of: "If they come...let them come humbly"!!
In short, we can say that this step in the direction of returning to Syria now is not successful from my point of view, and it is not an urgent need to which the rule of necessity applies. The solution is with our Syrian brothers in exile and diaspora. It allows us to say: “We have not failed you.” And now, with your return to your homes, we have the right to move to restore the relationship with Syria, which was a strong pillar of our Palestinian struggle.
I say to those who are in a hurry to return to Syria at any cost, and just to register a position that satisfies some of their allies and our brothers in Beirut and Tehran, that if this step takes place, it will be the first major crack in the relationship of the Hamas movement with its Islamic base and its organizational ties at home and abroad.
Yes, there are those who whisper in the Brotherhood’s special councils the necessity of moving and declaring innocence from such a position, and defaming everyone who stands behind him or calls for him from the upper ranks of the Hamas leaders abroad or even inside, and this, if done, is based on the people’s enthusiasm, the cause and its pages. Light, its movement and its resistance to peace.
last word; To our brothers and loved ones among the leaders of the Hamas movement.. Whoever is distressed by exile and fears that some countries will turn the back of madness for him, the doors of Jerusalem are wide open for him, and the liberated Gaza calls him to bond and testify on its pure land, as the fate of the rebel is - Brothers - not alienation, but the homeland. ‏

Cuba allows foreign investment in the wholesale and retail sectors

Havana (AFP) - The Cuban government has announced that it will allow foreign investments in wholesale and retail trade, in an effort to find a solution to the country's acute shortage of goods.

"Foreign investment in wholesale and retail trade, organized by the state, will allow the expansion and diversification of supplies to the population and contribute to the recovery of the national industry," Economy Minister Alejandro Gil said in a tweet on Tuesday.

The Cuban government will maintain its monopoly on foreign trade.

Until now, foreign investments in Cuba were only permitted in the production of goods and services, in addition to a few sectors such as hotels.

According to the new procedures, wholesale companies can be 100 percent affiliated to private investors, but retail companies will remain subject to the island's mixed economy system, in which the state should retain participation.

Cuba's trade sector, which is controlled by the state, has great difficulty obtaining foreign currency and purchasing supplies.

Cubans are forced to wait in long lines to buy food and essential goods with Cuban pesos at government stores, where supplies are very limited.

Stores that can be paid in dollars started operating in 2019 and the stocks were generally more, but the shelves appeared empty in recent months due to the shortage of goods.

This situation fuels the black market and fuels the inflationary spiral.

And in 2021, consumer prices increased by 70 percent year-on-year, according to official figures.

And in August 2021, the Cuban government allowed small and medium-sized private enterprises, ending 52 years of state monopoly.

Cuba is currently experiencing the worst economic crisis in thirty years, exacerbated by the Covid epidemic and the sanctions imposed by the United States on the island sixty years ago.

German arrested for performing "Hitler salute" in front of Israeli athletes

Munich - (AFP) - German police announced today, Wednesday, that they had arrested a security guard for performing the "Hitler salute" in front of a group of Israeli athletes who were visiting the memorial to the Munich Olympics attack in 1972.

Police said in a statement that 16 athletes from Israel's European Athletics Championships team were visiting the Olympic Park in Munich on Tuesday evening when a security guard made the forbidden salute.

"One of the four security guards was seen at around 19:20 making the Nazi signal (Hitler salute)," the statement said.

Immediately, the police arrested the 19-year-old suspect, who is from Berlin, and was prevented from being present in all other tournament activities.

The police pointed out that the athletes did not notice this movement.

The incident comes at a sensitive time, as Munich hosts the European Athletics Championships ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Olympics attack that killed 11 Israelis.

On September 5, 1972, eight gunmen broke into the Israeli team's apartment in the Olympic Village, shot two, took nine Israelis hostage, and threatened to kill them unless 232 Palestinian prisoners were released.

West German police responded with a botched rescue operation in which all the hostages were killed, along with five of their captors and a policeman.

The families of the dead have received 4.5 million euros in compensation, but they say it is not enough and have pledged to boycott the commemoration of the tragedy.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas exacerbated the situation during his visit to Berlin on Tuesday, after remarks equating Israel's policy towards the Palestinians with the Holocaust at the hands of the Nazis, sparked strong condemnation.

Continued storms, snow and floods in the United States

A winter storm on the northeastern coast of the United States and floods in the west of the country caused power outages in hundreds of thousands of American homes on Wednesday, and disrupted public services, amid expectations of more rain and snow.

And the specialized “PowerAutage” website confirmed the power outages in about 200,000 homes and businesses in western California, and in a large number of buildings in five states in the northeast, from New York to Boston.

Heavy snowfall and winds knocked down trees on coastal roads, making them impassable, according to local meteorological services.

"Our crews are working tirelessly to get everyone's power back," New Hampshire Emergency and Safety Services said on Facebook, but "it's snowing outside."

Authorities have repeatedly called on residents to be careful, particularly of the risks of injury or heart attacks while shoveling snow.

In Massachusetts, schools continued to be closed Wednesday in many areas, including Berkshire County, where snowfall reached 71 centimeters.

"An additional 7 to 20 centimeters of snow is expected in parts of New York state and the New England region through Wednesday," the National Weather Service said in its latest bulletin on Wednesday morning.

On the other side of the country, the state of California witnessed sporadic floods on Wednesday as a result of heavy rains in the state, the largest in terms of population, which includes 39 million people.

"Atmospheric River" will continue to affect California through Wednesday. The powerful storm is expected to produce heavy snowfall in the mountains and gusty winds from the Sierra into the central and northern Rocky Mountains, the National Weather Service said.

The "atmospheric river" consists of a giant rainforest that transports stored water vapor from the tropics, mostly around Hawaii, and causes very wet winters on the West Coast.

This past weekend, homes and cars were inundated after the Pajaro River flooded, causing a crack in a dam overnight Friday-Saturday and prompting the evacuation of thousands of people south of San Francisco.

Evacuations have also been ordered in Santa Barbara County in the south of the state and in parts of the upscale coastal enclave of Montecito, where Prince Harry and his wife Meghan live.

Speaker: China's economy is still resilient and full of potential and vitality

BEIJING, (Xinhua) -- China's national political advisors believe the country's economy remains resilient and full of potential and vitality, said a spokesperson for the first session of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Answering questions at a press conference, Guo Weimin said that despite the complex and harsh development environment, China has great strength in market size, industrial system and human resources.

Warning against headwinds, including continued turmoil in the international political and economic landscape, repercussions of policy adjustments in other major economies and domestic economic recovery that has yet to be consolidated, Guo urged firm confidence in doing a good job in economic work in 2023.

"We must make stabilizing growth, striving to effectively upgrade the economy and appropriately expand its scope, as our top priority," he said.

China's economy expanded by 3 percent last year, overcoming the impact of factors beyond expectations such as the complex global environment, COVID-19 and natural disasters.

The spokesperson said that maintaining overall economic stability and withstanding pressure to bring the economy to a new stage is a hard-won achievement for the country.

"National political advisors have suggested concrete reform steps to improve expectations and boost confidence," he told reporters.

Citing advice from members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Guo said the country should continue to implement a strategy to expand domestic demand to speed up recovery and stimulate consumption.

He noted that efforts should be made to promote the stable and healthy development of the real estate sector and push the industry's transformation into a new development model.

He also proposed stronger policy guidance to facilitate the digital transformation of traditional industries and small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as deepening reforms to allow financial institutions to better serve micro and small enterprises and innovation.

The funeral of the martyred child, Amer Abu Zaytoun, in Nablus

Nablus - "Jerusalem" dot com - Today, Thursday, large crowds mourned the body of the child martyr, Amer Abu Zaytoun, to his final resting place in Balata camp.

The funeral procession set off in front of Rafidia Governmental Hospital, towards the house of the martyr's family in Balata camp, to take a farewell look at him, pray for him at the Ebad Al-Rahman Mosque in the camp, and then bury him in the martyrs' cemetery.

Participants in the funeral of the martyr's body chanted slogans condemning the occupation's crimes against our defenseless Palestinian people.

The Ministry of Health announced at dawn that the child Abu Zaytoun (16 years old) had risen after being shot in the head by the occupation soldiers during the aggression on Nablus.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates denounced this crime, and the occupation army's incursion into all Palestinian areas and its continuous violation of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

She stressed that this reflects the official Israeli reversal of all signed agreements, not only through field executions of Palestinian citizens and dealing with them as targets for shooting and training as a result of the shooting facilities approved by the political and military echelons of the occupying state, but also through the escalation in the seizure of land, the deepening of settlements and the demolition of homes. Ethnic cleansing operations in the West Bank, especially Area C.

She said that this means a process of gradual annexation and swallowing up of the occupied West Bank that is accelerating daily, in a process of systematic destruction and sabotage of the opportunity to implement the principle of the two-state solution, and closing the door permanently to the opportunity to embody the Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital on the borders of June 4, 1967.

A crossing between Turkey and Armenia opened after the earthquake for the first time in 35 years

Istanbul - (AFP) - A crossing between Armenia and Turkey has opened for the first time in 35 years in order to allow the passage of humanitarian aid after the earthquake that hit the region, the official Turkish Anadolu Agency reported Saturday.

The agency said that five trucks loaded with aid for the victims of the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on Monday crossed the Alikan crossing in Igdir province.

The Anadolu Agency quoted a tweet by Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan, in which he said, "The humanitarian aid sent by Armenia has crossed the Margara Bridge on the border between Armenia and Turkey and is on its way to the earthquake-affected areas."

According to the Turkish agency, this crossing was specially opened in 1988 to send aid to Armenia, which was hit by an earthquake that hit its capital, Yerevan, and the number of victims ranged between 25,000 and 30,000 dead.

Tension prevails between the two countries due to Ankara's refusal to recognize the massacres of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire during World War I as genocide.

Tensions escalated due to the military conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan last year over Nagorno-Karabakh.

However, in December 2021, the two countries appointed special envoys to represent each other in the other country, and they met several times in Vienna to discuss the normalization of relations between them.

Commercial flights between them also resumed in February 2022.
