A division between northern European countries and Germany over granting tourist visas to Russians

Oslo - (AFP) - The positions of northern European countries and Germany differed in Oslo on Monday regarding restricting the granting of tourist visas to Russians, in response to the invasion of Ukraine, a measure called for by Helsinki but which raised Berlin's reservations.

"The Russian people did not start the war, but at the same time we have to realize that they support the war," Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said after a meeting that included the heads of government of the Nordic countries and Germany.

"It is not fair that Russian citizens can enter Europe and the Schengen area as tourists (...) while Russia is killing people in Ukraine," she added in a joint press conference.

Since the imposition of the ban on flights from Russia to the European Union, more and more Russian tourists have come to the Scandinavian country, which shares a long border with Russia, to cross into other European countries.

For his part, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his reservations about this procedure.

"It was an important decision on our part to impose sanctions on those responsible for the war and against many wealthy loyalists (of the Russian government) and those who benefit financially and economically from (Russian President Vladimir) Putin's regime," he said.

He added, "We will continue to do so, but I think it is not the war of the Russian people, it is Putin's war," considering that restricting tourist visas would also punish "anyone who flees from Russia because he disagrees with the Russian regime."

For its part, Sweden indicated, through Prime Minister Magdalena Andersen, that it had not yet decided on this issue, while Denmark called for preserving European unity in front of Moscow.

"One of our successes in this war is our unity, and I think we should have this discussion," said Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

Middle Eastern countries ignore the dictates of the United States in pursuit of strategic independence

TEHRAN - (Xinhua) Days after US President Joe Biden concluded his first tour in the Middle East with the aim of mobilizing support, the region witnessed a set of regional developments, which showed the regional countries' relentless pursuit of strategic independence and their tiredness of US interference.

After Biden's visit, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Iran, accompanied by Russian President Vladimir Putin, and the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, chose Paris, instead of Washington, as the destination for his first visit abroad, while Tehran and Riyadh agreed to hold general reconciliation talks. .

Analysts say that behind these moves are joint efforts for development and security by regional countries, as they seek to restore their own strategic independence that was overshadowed by American influence.

Refusal to take sides

As the Ukraine crisis continues to escalate, most countries in the Middle East have refused to join the "anti-Russian camp" led by the United States, showing disunity between them. For example, in February, the UAE abstained from voting in favor of a US-backed resolution condemning Russia in the UN Security Council.

On the energy issue, the United States and Britain urge oil-rich countries in the Middle East to increase oil production in order to reduce oil prices and ease the energy crisis, to create political space for more pressure on Russia.

However, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states have not shown much interest in cooperating with the United States on oil matters, as such a move undermines their national interests. Riyadh has repeatedly said that oil production in the kingdom will not be increased until an agreement is reached with its OPEC+ partners during the next meeting in August.

Fan Hongda, a professor at the Institute of Middle East Studies at Shanghai International Studies University in China, said that Middle Eastern countries have shown "increasing confidence in confronting world powers," adding that traditional energy powers in the Middle East are "increasing rapidly" and their voices are being heard in the international arena. .

winds of reconciliation

Biden's first trip to the Middle East was aimed at mobilizing support to confront what he described as "Iranian threats", but at best the actual achievement was not fully achieved. Despite Washington's escalation of the Iranian threat, Iraq recently said that it intends to host a "public" meeting between Iran and Saudi Arabia at the level of foreign ministers as part of the successive reconciliation talks mediated by Baghdad.

This possible normalization of Iranian-Saudi relations is part of a broader reconciliation process in the region, as countries, including Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt, seek to adjust their foreign policies and heal the rift in their relations after years of hostility.

For a long time, the United States has been trying to enhance its regional influence by provoking confrontation between blocs, and exploiting the strained relations between regional countries to intervene, but the countries of the Middle East have widely realized that this is contrary to the interests of the region, according to politicians and analysts.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said recently that "dialogue is the best policy to address existing tensions," adding that "the region suffers from enough crises and we do not want more tensions."

Professor Fan said that in parallel with reducing tensions, development is "increasingly important" on the national agenda of Middle Eastern countries, and regional countries are working to enhance cooperation with each other to achieve development.

Middle East awakening

Speaking at a summit with Arab leaders as part of his latest tour, Biden said that the United States "will not turn away" from the Middle East and leave the so-called "vacuum" for other major countries to fill.

However, such statements by Biden reflect "serious problems with the current perception of the Middle East in the United States," and "always vigilant Middle Eastern countries deliberately seek to eliminate or limit the influence of world powers on the region."

Professor Fan said that the Middle East is being reshaped, and this process is characterized by a greater role for the countries of the region.

Meanwhile, in order to gain autonomy, the oil-rich economies of the Middle East have sought to diversify their economies and reduce their dependence on hydrocarbons over the past few years, in order to enhance their risk tolerance.

"Foreign powers have a deep economic, political and military footprint in the region. Economically independent states of the Middle East have the ability to challenge entrenched patterns of external domination and undermine the long legacy of divide and rule," wrote Adil Malik, an economist at Oxford University.

The "Foreign Ministry" calls on countries of the world to include settler organizations on terrorist lists

Ramallah - "Al Quds" dot com - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates demanded, on Monday, various countries to include extremist settler organizations on terrorist lists.

In a statement, the Ministry condemned the escalating terrorism of the armed settler militia against Palestinian citizens, their lands, homes, properties, and sanctities, the latest of which was the perpetration of more than 120 attacks during one night in the southern Nablus area, their burning of a house and vehicles, writing racist slogans in Turmusaya, and storming the village of Al-Auja. In the Jordan Valley, an attempt was made to burn a house, two young men were injured, and two vehicles were set on fire by settler terrorist gangs in the village of Jalud, south of Nablus.

The Ministry affirmed that the protection provided by the political level in the occupying country to the settlers and their gangs and the support and assistance provided by the Israeli government to the settlement encourages elements of Jewish terrorism to commit more violations and crimes, especially with regard to expanding their armaments without an officer or law.

And it warned of the consequences of the settler militia committing major crimes or massacres against the Palestinian citizens, calling for a firm and practical international and American position to stop the Israeli escalation in general and settler attacks and terror in particular.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it follows up the decisions and procedures of the occupying power and settler terrorism as extensive and racist collective punishments, with the components of the international community and the United Nations in all of New York and Geneva, and follows them up with all countries with the aim of mobilizing the widest international pressure on the Israeli government to stop its insane escalation in the situation in the conflict arena. To demand international protection for our people, and to deal with extremist settler organizations as terrorist organizations.

Qatar denies British reports about working conditions in the World Cup workshops

Lausanne - (AFP) - The organizers of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar , which will be held from November 20 to December 18, Thursday denied what was stated in a report by a British non-governmental organization about "discrimination and exploitation" in the construction sites of the World Cup stadiums, which was based on Testimonies of about sixty workers.

The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy said in a statement that the 95-page report issued by Equidem, entitled "If We Complain, We Will Be Expelled," is "full of inaccurate information and misleading statements."

Qatar is under criticism for its treatment of migrant workers, especially in the field of construction, despite its implementation of "reforms" according to what "Equidem" acknowledges, in particular by setting a minimum wage of about 207 euros per month and reducing the sponsorship system that prevented employees from leaving the country or changing jobs. without the employer's permission.

But the head of the non-governmental organization, Mostafa Qadri, said in a statement, "We believe that thousands of workers should receive compensation for illegal recruitment fees, unpaid wages and other damages," a demand previously raised by several organizations, including Amnesty International.

The report states that it relied on the testimonies of 60 foreign workers who were employed between 2014 and 2022 in the eight stadiums that will host the tournament, and lists a range of grievances that range from a “culture of fear” at work to exposure to extreme heat, cold and dust, to the impossibility of taking sick leave and non-payment. wages.

The organization also cites two indirect testimonies recalling the fatal fall of a Bangladeshi citizen “in March 2019” and another Chinese “certainly in 2021” at the Lusail Stadium that hosts the final match, in addition to the testimony of a Kenyan worker who said that he witnessed “many deaths” in the same place. and serious injuries among our colleagues," while "work continued normally."

The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy responded that this accusation was "absolutely false, and it was presented without any evidence, like the majority of the report," noting that it spoke in its reports on the preparations for the World Cup about recording "three work-related deaths and 37 non-work-related deaths since 2014."

The committee stressed that "given the measures... envisaged for the safety of workers, it would be practically impossible to conceal or not properly report a work-related death," and considered that "it is inconceivable that fatal accidents were reported by Equidem and not by any media or organization." Other NGOs, such as the International Labor Organization, which opened an office in Doha in 2018.

In a separate statement, FIFA said it was "in contact with its Qatari counterparts to assess the information contained in the report," pointing to "regular independent inspections" by the BWI.

Wages are expected to rise by more than 4% in 2023 in seven major economies

Paris - (AFP) - From the United States to China via Germany, the average wage increase is expected to exceed 4 percent in 2023 in seven major economies in the world, according to a study published Tuesday by Willis Towers Watson, a financial advisory firm.

The rate of revaluation companies intend to make for next year ranges from 4 percent in France to 6.6 percent in Brazil, according to the British-American insurance and advisory firm.

It is expected to be 4.6 percent in the United States and 5.67 percent in China, according to the company, which conducted a survey in 135 countries, but cited only responses collected in seven major economies of the world.

In six of the seven countries concerned (Germany, Canada, China, France, the United Kingdom and the United States), the rate of increase planned for 2023 is greater than that recorded in 2022. Only Brazil is an exception, with average increases expected to reach 7 percent in 2022 and 6 6 percent next year.

Among the reasons companies give more generous raises are inflation and tensions in the labor market.

In each of the seven countries, it acknowledges that it is facing increasing difficulty in recruiting and retaining its employees in 2022 compared to the previous year.

Estimates for 2023 vary, as Canadian and US companies expect employment tensions to ease, while Chinese companies believe it will continue. Germany, France, Brazil and the United Kingdom fear that they will face greater difficulty in recruiting and retaining employees in 2023.

Companies, especially in the information technology and digital professions sector, are facing more difficulty in hiring, as the demand for engineers increases.

"The overall economic outlook for 2023 is pessimistic, with recessions expected in many economies," said Khalil Ait Mouloud, who heads the wage study at Willis Towers Watson.

The study was conducted online from October 3 to November 4, 2022, and included 25,000 companies in 135 countries, including Germany (802), Brazil (500), Canada (882), China (888), the United States (1,550) and France. (800) and the United Kingdom (1109).

Iraq is negotiating with several countries to import gas to fill the energy shortage

BAGHDAD - (Xinhua) - The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity announced that it is negotiating with Qatar and Turkmenistan to import gas in order to fill the shortage in electric power, stressing that it is still in dire need of Iranian gas and is negotiating with Tehran in this regard.

The spokesman for the Ministry of Electricity, Ahmed Musa, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) today (Tuesday) that "Iraq is now in continuous discussions with the Qatari side and Turkmenistan to supply gas with specific parts to fill the existing shortage."

Moussa did not give more details, where these negotiations reached, and how the gas reached Iraq.

He added, "Iraq is still in dire need of Iranian gas," noting that his country has fully paid its gas debts to the Iranian side.

The Ministry of Electricity recently expected an increase in emissions after Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani's talks with the Iranian side, during his recent visit to Tehran.

A spokesman for the ministry said, "We expect and hope that there will be an increase in gas releases in favor of the ministry's stations, especially as we enter the peak of winter loads, and then we have a large and implementable plan that is urgent to keep pace with the peak of summer loads from now on."

He added, "There are agreements and contracts signed between the Iraqi and Iranian sides on specific launches in winter and others in summer."

Iraq has been suffering for decades from an electric current crisis that intensifies in the summer, as temperatures rise more than 50 degrees Celsius.

An American girl pushes with her hands a bear that attacked her garden to protect her dogs

Post-fertility period.. Overcoming hope over despair

Israel, the World Cup and the road to Hungary

Written by: Hamdi Farrag
The Arab and non-Arab crowds will continue to follow the World Cup even if no Arab team remains in the qualifiers after the exit of the teams of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia from the first round, because the World Cup this time is held on Arab soil with an Arab flavor and Arab foods, and the Arabs in general and the specialists in particular will keep With my exploits, Saudi Arabia defeated Argentina and Tunisia defeated France.
The Arabs will also maintain that the World Cup in Qatar has exposed the cover of the Arabs normalized with Israel, and has cornered them in one of its narrow corners, to the extent that some did not hide their resentment at the success of the organization, so they attacked Qatar and attacked the World Cup, but the Israeli position, which completely identified with their position, increased their scandal and perhaps In their isolation on the level of the Arab masses from the ocean (Morocco) to the Gulf (Bahrain and the Emirates).
The Israeli identification with the Arabists, represented in official complaints against Qatar, which endangers its citizens, and anti-Semitism, but the statement of the Swiss FIFA President on the eve of the World Cup exceeded the racism of religion and Semitism to the racism of the white race and blue eyes in the persecution of this nation for three thousand years, and here is Tunisia France is defeated while Morocco excludes Belgium and Canada from the World Cup.
This Israeli identification with the Arab printers continued through an editorial for Yedioth Ahronoth, the largest Israeli newspaper, in which it called on the Israelis to look at the glass half full (the Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco), where the Israeli goes there freely and enjoys respect and hospitality. Qatar, the newspaper says, is the Sunni version of Shiite Iran, and it is teeming with Palestinians, and this is the empty half of the cup.
The UAE, in turn, identified itself in a shameful manner with Israel, when it invited Bin Ghafir to attend a ceremony commemorating its fiftieth independence day, and Bahrain is preparing to receive the Israeli president amid protest demonstrations against hosting him.
Whatever it was, the World Cup quickly folded, and the details folded with it, just as the events and details of twenty-one World Cups before were folded, and people hardly remember the winning team in the World Cup, so that they can remember who participated and who did not, and if this or that country had qualified for the second round Or I got out of the first round, and so on.
But we will keep remembering that at a time when the masses were obsessed with following the events of the World Cup, Israel went to re-elect Benjamin Netanyahu and with him the clique of priestly and priestly parties, and during that time it killed about thirty Palestinians in the West Bank and the list has not yet been closed, and after a few days Lapid will hand over the keys of government to Netanyahu. And soon he will retract what he said two months ago at the United Nations, boasting that Israel is the only country in the world that wrote a book “by God’s decision.” But all this made the veteran writer, Shimon Sheffer, say: “And I, very much longing for the country from which we came, A small village in Hungary that no longer exists.
Israel's neck to host the World Cup after eight years, with the participation of Saudi Arabia and Egypt, will it host it, or will it make its way to Hungary? .

The United States is testing a nuclear engine for future missions to Mars

LOS ANGELES - (Xinhua) -- NASA and the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) on Tuesday announced their cooperation to test a thermonuclear rocket engine in space, a major step in preparation for the first manned missions to Mars.

The two US agencies will participate in the Draco space operations agile rocket program to use a thermonuclear rocket that allows for faster space travel time, reducing risks to astronauts, according to NASA.

Reducing travel time is a key component of human missions to Mars, as longer journeys require more supplies and more powerful systems.

"NASA will work with our long-term partner DARPA to develop and demonstrate advanced nuclear thermal propulsion technology as early as 2027," said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.

With the help of this new technology, astronauts can travel to and from deep space faster than ever before--a great capability in preparation for manned missions to Mars."

How does the reality of Palestinian universities affect international rankings with the choices of high school students?

Nablus - "Jerusalem" dot com - Every year, with the release of high school results, thousands of students are confused about the nature of the majors they should study, and most importantly, where?

In 2022, 58,107 male and female students passed out of 85,300 who sat for the general secondary exam. The latest report issued by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, under the title “Fields of Study and Relationship to the Labor Market for Individuals 20-29 Years Old,” shows that the number of graduates of Palestinian higher education institutions reached 41,137 male and female graduates. The academic year 2019/2020, while the local labor market annually absorbs an average of 9,000 job opportunities for graduates only.

In Palestine, the number of accredited and licensed educational institutions is 51 higher education institutions, including 16 traditional universities, and two universities for open education, according to the annual statistical book of Palestinian higher education institutions issued by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research for the year 2020/2021.

Thus, students must carefully choose their specializations as well as the educational institution that meets their aspirations, bearing in mind that the geographical factor - the proximity of the educational institution - the value of fees and expenses, the university student environment, the university's reputation and its global ranking are all factors that play an important role in this regard.

The last factor, which students may not give much weight to, is an important factor, especially after graduation, as higher education institutions in Palestine in general, and universities in particular, compete for advanced ranks in international rankings. Education quality, academic and research level, and other criteria that will be addressed in this report.

What are the most reliable global rankings?

There are many international rankings, and they differ in their methodology, indicators, standards, calculation methods, and work mechanisms, and there is nothing that can determine the superiority of one classification over another. However, analytical studies agree that the three most famous and most widespread and credible international classifications are the Chinese Shanghai Classification - Academic Ranking of World Universities. World University), the British Times Higher Education rankings, and the British QS University Rankings.

Shanghai Academic Ranking of World University:
This classification began by evaluating the level of Chinese universities compared to others around the world, but then it became one of the best accredited international classifications, which is relied upon by all countries around the world in evaluating and ranking universities, and is based in its criteria on the availability of graduates and teachers from the university who have won Nobel Prizes, Research production in international journals, and others.

These standards are among the most difficult in international rankings, and there are no Palestinian universities included in this classification due to the difficulty of achieving its standards.

Times Higher Education University Rankings:

The Times magazine began issuing annual rankings of universities since 2004, and it has evolved from its classification several times to become one of the most famous international rankings, and annually issues several rankings, such as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, which includes the best about 1,600 universities around the world, And the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, which includes the best universities in the world in achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations in 2015, and this classification includes about 1,400 universities around the world in its latest version, in addition to the Times classification according to geographical region, This includes the Times Arab University Rankings, the Asia University Rankings, and the Emerging Economies University Rankings.

The Times Magazine classification criteria are generally based on measuring the quality of the educational environment, scientific research, research citations, university internationality, and income from industries. These criteria include a number of indicators, which differ in their weights from one sub-classification to another.

As for the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, it contains indicators to measure the university's performance in achieving the 17 sustainable development goals.

With regard to the status of Palestinian universities in this classification, it appears, based on the results published on the websites, that An-Najah National University is unique in its presence in Palestine in the Times World University Rankings and among the top 500 universities in the world, and the ranking of universities in countries with emerging economies is ranked 94 among universities in those countries. countries, and the ranking of universities in the continent of Asia ranked 89 on the continent.

The reason for the uniqueness of An-Najah University in these classifications is due to the existence of conditions for the participation of universities in them, which depend mainly on scientific research, and only An-Najah University could achieve them.

As for the other sub-rankings issued by the Times magazine, it also appears that An-Najah University ranked first in the Times classification of Arab universities, at a rank of 51-60, followed by Birzeit University, at a rank of 61-70 among Arabs.

With regard to the Times classification of the impact related to the achievement of sustainable development goals, four Palestinian universities appeared in the classification, namely An-Najah University among the best 200 universities in the world, Birzeit University among the best 300 universities in the world, and both Arab American University and the Islamic University in Gaza among the best 1000 universities in the world. .

QS University Rankings:

This classification is published by Quacquarelli Symonds, a company specializing in higher education, based in the United Kingdom. Such as the QS Arab University Rankings, the QS World University Rankings by Subject, the QS Graduate Employability Rankings, and others.

The QS classification criteria depend mainly on academic and operational reputation criteria, and it is measured through a questionnaire circulated to academics and operators around the world, as well as standards for teacher-to-student ratio, research citations, and international student-teacher ratios. These criteria and their weights vary based on the sub-classification.

With regard to the status of Palestinian universities in this classification, it is better than its position in the Times magazine rankings. Based on the latest published data from the institution, three Palestinian universities were able to participate in the QS classification version of international universities, which are An-Najah University, Al-Quds University, Birzeit University, and Kan An-Najah University and Al-Quds University are ranked among the top 1,200 universities, with a slight difference between the two universities.

As for the results of Palestinian universities in the QS Arab University Rankings version, 8 Palestinian universities appeared in this classification, namely An-Najah University (46 Arab), Birzeit University (one of the best 60 Arab universities), and Al-Quds University (one of the best). 70 Arab universities), the Islamic University in Gaza (of the best 120 Arab universities), the Arab American University (of the best 130 Arab universities), Al-Azhar University in Gaza, Palestine Polytechnic University and Palestine Technical University Kadoorie (of the best 180 Arab universities).

Several countries condemn Russia's "militarization" of the Zaporizhia nuclear plant

United Nations (United States) - (AFP) Several countries, including France, on Wednesday condemned Russia's "militarization" of the Zaporizhia nuclear plant in Ukraine , which threatens nuclear security.

The foreign ministers of Germany, Canada, France, Italy, Britain and Ukraine, and representatives of South Korea, the United States and Switzerland stressed in a joint statement after a meeting in New York that "Russia's seizure and militarization of the Zaporizhia nuclear plant are the main cause of the current threats in terms of nuclear security and safety."

"We recall that the increased risk of a nuclear accident will remain dangerously high as long as Russia is in the Zaporizhia site," the statement added.

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, warned Wednesday that the situation at the Zaporizhya plant, the largest in Europe, was "deteriorating further", while the Ukrainians accused Russia of bombing it again.

"The situation is still deteriorating, and we cannot afford to waste time until something catastrophic happens," Grossi said after a meeting on this subject held at the headquarters of the French mission to the United Nations and opened by President Emmanuel Macron.

He stated that he discussed the matter with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, whom he met on Wednesday morning on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

"As long as the bombing continues, the risks are great," he added.

Grossi also confirmed during a press conference that he had spoken with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, expressing his hope that "the possibility of going to Kiev soon and perhaps to Russia later."

He pointed out that no agreement had been reached to establish a protection zone around the station, explaining that "the real talks about the standards" of this zone are still in their "beginnings".

On Wednesday, the Ukrainian authorities accused Russia of bombing the site of the largest power station in Europe again, stressing that the radiation in this facility did not exceed the normal rate.

"Even in the worst circumstances, diplomacy should never stop (...) It is our responsibility to do this with practical and realistic proposals, and this is what we are trying to do," Grossi said.
For her part, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna declared that the goal is "the demilitarization of the station within the framework of Ukraine's sovereignty."

On Wednesday, the state operator of Ukrainian nuclear power plants, Energuatom, called on the IAEA to "take firmer action" against Moscow, announcing new bombings.

The Zaporizhia station, occupied by Russian forces since the first weeks of their February 24 invasion of Ukraine, has been repeatedly bombed in recent months.

Kiev and Moscow share responsibility and accusations of nuclear blackmail.

Brazil and three Latin countries denounce Israel's decision to legalize settlements in the West Bank

Brasilia - (AFP) - Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Mexico on Friday denounced Israel's decision to legalize settlements in the occupied West Bank , following a series of attacks on East Jerusalem.

A statement issued by the Brazilian Foreign Ministry and signed by the four countries expressed its "grave concern" over Israel's announcement last Sunday that it would legitimize nine settlement outposts in the West Bank and give the green light to build 10,000 settlement units there.
"These unilateral measures constitute serious violations of international law and UN Security Council resolutions," the statement added.

Most Western powers consider Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967 illegal and in violation of international law.

About 475,000 Israeli settlers live in outposts not recognized by international law in the West Bank, among more than 2.9 million Palestinians.

The return of left-wing Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to the presidency on January 1 ended a four-year period of Brazilian alignment with Israel under his far-right predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro , who even raised the issue of moving the Brazilian embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The governments of the four countries called on both sides to "refrain from actions and provocations that might lead to a new escalation of violence" in the region, and urged negotiations for a "peaceful solution" to the conflict.

An American cleaning company was fined $1.5 million for illegally hiring children

Washington (AFP) - A cleaning company in the United States has paid a $1.5 million fine for putting more than 100 children into "hazardous jobs" and putting them to work in meat processing and packaging centers, the Labor Department said Friday.

Authorities concluded that Packers Sanitation Services employed at least 100 and two children, ages 13 to 17, and put them to work night shifts at 13 meatpacking centers in eight states.

"Children were using hazardous chemicals to clean meat-processing equipment, including hand saws, meat cutting machines and animal decapitation machines," the Labor Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry indicated that at least three minors were injured while working for the company.

Major companies, including "Tyssen", "GBS Foods" and "Cargi", manage meat processing centers, according to investigations.

These companies were not fined.

The fine was imposed on Packers Sanitation Services following an investigation launched in August 2022.

"The child labor abuses in this case were systemic... and clearly indicate a corporate failure," said Jessica Lohmann, a Labor Department official.

She told reporters that officials had noticed an increase in child labor violations by about 50 percent since 2018.

"These children should never have been employed in meat-packing centres," she added, emphasizing that "this only happens when employers take no responsibility in terms of avoiding child labor abuses."
The imposition of the fine comes at a time when some states are seeking to ease protective measures related to child labor, to help companies with problems at the level of workers find more employees, while bills were raised in this regard in both Iowa and Minnesota.

SANA: The American forces stole 398 oil tanks from Syria within 5 days

DAMASCUS, (Xinhua) -- The US forces stole 398 tanks of Syrian oil during the past five days and sent them to their bases in Iraqi territory through illegal crossings, the official news agency (SANA) reported on Tuesday.

The official agency quoted local sources in Al-Hasakah countryside (northeastern Syria ) as saying, “The American forces have intensified during the past days the theft of oil from the Syrian Al-Jazeera fields, as the number of tanks loaded with stolen oil since last Thursday reached 398 tanks, all of which were transported to Iraqi territory through a crossing.” Illegitimate Mahmudiyah.

SANA indicated that the US forces stole today 65 tanks of Syrian oil from inside the Syrian territory to Iraq through the Mahmoudiyah crossing, which is an illegal route established to send oil tankers from Syria to Iraq.

The American forces, who took control of the main oil and gas fields in Hasakah with the help of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), regularly smuggled oil out of Syria.

Yesterday, Monday, the American forces removed 100 tanks loaded with stolen Syrian oil from Hasakah to their bases in neighboring Iraq, according to SANA.

Last Saturday, a convoy of 89 tankers loaded with stolen oil was sent to the US bases in Iraq through the same crossing.

SANA added that last Thursday, the United States sent a convoy of 144 oil tankers in the same way.

The official Syrian news agency stated that the incident comes within the framework of America's continuous violations of international principles and its involvement in plundering the natural resources of other countries and starving their people.

Damascus repeatedly accuses the United States of stealing oil and wheat from the areas it controls in northern and eastern Syria and transporting them through trucks and tankers to Iraq.

And the Ministry of Oil and Mineral Resources in Syria announced in a statement posted on its Facebook page last Tuesday that 66,000 barrels of oil per day were stolen by the American forces from the occupied fields in the eastern region, noting that the total direct and indirect losses since the beginning of the war are in Syria amounted to about 105 billion dollars until the middle of the year 2022.

Occupation violations in Sheikh Jarrah and against education dominate the festive scene at Birzeit University

German chancellor calls for equal trade relations at controversial China summit

BEIJING (AFP) - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told Chinese leaders in Beijing on Friday that Berlin expects reciprocity in trade exchanges as it looks to boost economic cooperation despite growing mistrust of the Asian superpower in the West.

Schulz is under pressure to push Beijing to take a hard line on Russia over the war in Ukraine, and said Friday that Germany and China had agreed that they opposed any use of nuclear weapons in the conflict.

Schulz is the first among the G7 leaders to visit China since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has prompted the world's second largest economy to largely close its borders.

The visit sparked controversy, as it comes shortly after Xi strengthened his grip on power and in light of the high level of tension between the West and Beijing over issues starting from the Taiwan file and not ending with human rights violations.

Schulz held talks with human rights lawyers opposed to the regime in Beijing before the trip, according to a source in his accompanying delegation told AFP.

Schulz, who was received by the Chinese president after his arrival in Beijing at the Great Hall of the People, said he seeks to "develop" economic cooperation further, while acknowledging the existence of divergent views on a number of issues.

"It is good that we can exchange views here on all issues, including those that we see from two different perspectives. That is the purpose of the communication," he was quoted by a German government source as saying.

"We also want to discuss how we can develop our economic cooperation on other issues: climate change, food security and heavily indebted countries," he added.

In turn, Xi Jinping stressed the need for China and Germany to work together in times of change and instability and contribute more to world peace and development, as reported by the Xinhua News Agency on the meeting.

Schulz also met with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang at a meeting, in which he called for fair trade between the two countries.

"We do not believe in ideas of severing relations (with China), but it is also clear that this is linked to equal economic relations with reciprocity," he said in a statement.

He urged Beijing to do more to pressure its ally Russia, which has been at war in Ukraine for months.

"I told President (Xi) that it is important for China to use its influence over Russia," Scholz said during a meeting with reporters.

Scholz also called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to extend the grain export agreement from Ukraine.

Both sides have said they oppose the use of nuclear weapons in the conflict, with Schulz telling reporters that "everyone in China knows that an escalation (of the war) will have consequences for all of us."

"That is why it is so important for me to stress that everyone says clearly that escalation with a tactical nuclear weapon is out of the question," he added.

China avoided criticizing Russia over the Ukraine invasion, instead blaming the United States and NATO for the war.

The German delegation, consisting of more than 60 people, was greeted by a military guard on the tarmac at Beijing Airport, in addition to health workers wearing protective suits who conducted corona detection tests in buses converted into mobile laboratories.

Schulz was examined on the plane by a German doctor who came with him under the supervision of officials from the Chinese health sector, according to the German government.

The German and Chinese economies are closely linked. Some in Berlin believe that the relationship is of great importance to Germany, which is witnessing an energy crisis sparked by the Ukraine war, and its economy is heading towards recession.

China provides an important market for German products, from machinery to vehicles made by companies such as Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

German industries' heavy dependence on China is also facing criticism at a time when Berlin is greatly affected by the repercussions of its overreliance on Russian energy imports, which left it in crisis when Moscow decided to cut supplies.

Commenting on this, opposition lawmaker Norbert Röttgen told the "Rheinisch Post" newspaper that Schulz's approach is still based on the idea that "we want to continue doing business with China, regardless of what that means for our economic dependency and our ability to move."

Figures within the ruling coalition also did not hide their concern about the relationship with China, as Foreign Minister Analina Berbock said that mistakes made in the past with Russia should not be repeated.

The sensitivity of the issue was highlighted when a row erupted last month over whether Chinese shipping giant Cosco should be allowed to buy a stake in a container terminal in the port of Hamburg.

While Schulz refused to heed calls from six ministries to reject the deal over security concerns, the company was instead allowed to buy a smaller stake.

There are concerns that the visit, which takes place after Xi secured a historic third presidential term during the Communist Party Congress last month, may have raised concerns in the United States and the European Union.

"For Beijing, it's less about tangible results and more about the symbolism of the German chancellor coming to Xi's visit shortly after the party congress," said Noah Barkin, associate professor in the Asia program at the German-American Marshall Fund.

"This gives international legitimacy to his term as leader for life and shows that China is not isolated," he added.

But Berlin stresses that it has consulted with its most prominent partners, while Schulz insisted that he was visiting China as a "European" and not just as a German official.

The leader of Europe's largest economic powerhouse defended the visit, stressing that direct talks with Chinese leaders had "become more important" after such talks were halted by the pandemic.

"We will not ignore controversial issues," he said in a press article, while enumerating a series of topics he will raise, including respect for civil liberties and the rights of ethnic minorities in Xinjiang.

Ranil Wickremesinghe is sworn in as President of Sri Lanka

Colombo, (AFP) - Six-time Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in Thursday as president of the crisis-hit South Asian country, his office said.

Wickremesinghe, 73, who was elected by parliament on Wednesday, was sworn in by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya in the heavily guarded parliament complex.

The Sri Lankan police chief and senior military officers stood behind the new president during a ceremony attended by Parliament Speaker Mahinda Abeywardana.

The short ceremony was to be broadcast on local television, but was cut short just before the swearing-in began.
Officials said an investigation had been launched into the cause of the sudden interruption.

Official sources indicated that the new president is expected to form a government of no more than 30 ministers to extricate the country from its worst economic crisis since its independence from Britain.

The population of 22 million has been suffering from a serious shortage of basic materials since the end of last year, as the country no longer has foreign currencies to finance its basic imports.

Sri Lanka defaulted on its $51 billion external debt in mid-April and is negotiating with the International Monetary Fund to approve a rescue plan.

Italian Prime Minister: The Russian Sputnik vaccine may not obtain European approval

Hadith al-Quds:: Targeting the captive movement is doomed to inevitable failure

Gaza: A demonstration of women calling for reunification with their husbands in the West Bank

Gaza - "Jerusalem" dot com - About 100 Palestinian women from the Gaza Strip demonstrated, on Tuesday, to demand reunification with their husbands in the West Bank .

The participants in the vigil in front of the Beit Hanoun "Erez" checkpoint raised slogans in Hebrew and Arabic, demanding their right to change their place of residence from the Gaza Strip to the West Bank, with the aim of reuniting them with their husbands, and for them to live a normal family life.

Hanan Abu Saa, representing the women, said in front of the journalists: "Our message to the international community is to intervene to solve our human issue that is far from politics. Here, in front of the Erez checkpoint, we are separated from our husbands by a few kilometers because of this separation wall, and all we want is to live a normal life." with our husbands."

She pointed out that among the married women and others who are engaged, they have not been able for many years, up to 16 years, to enter or even obtain a visitor permit to the West Bank, noting that their husbands also cannot enter the Strip because of the racist occupation policies.

She pointed out that a complete file on their case was submitted to the Civil Affairs, but no solutions were found, appealing to President Mahmoud Abbas and Minister Hussein Al-Sheikh to intervene to resolve their crisis.

Abu Saa said: "The occupation has a dirty racist policy and refuses to change addresses, even though this is a human demand. We do not understand what will harm our marriage and our children meeting with our husbands to form one family. We want to live and have a life only, we do not want to fight and we do not want to harm anyone." ".

Gulf 25: Bahrain begins defending the title against the UAE and Qatar faces Kuwait to heal the wounds of the World Cup

(AFP) - The defending Bahraini national football team begins its journey to defend the title with a strong confrontation against the UAE national team, Saturday, at Al-Mina Stadium in Basra Governorate, as part of the competitions of the second group teams, which also witness the confrontation between Kuwait and Qatar in the twenty-fifth edition of the Arab Gulf Cup. for football.
The Bahraini national team achieved its only title in the previous edition, which was held in the Qatari capital, Doha, in 2019, while the UAE national team achieved the title twice, the first in the Gulf 18 on its soil in the year 2007, and the second was in the Gulf 21 that was held in Bahrain in 2013.
The Bahraini national team, led by its Portuguese coach Helio Sousa, who led the Bahraini Reds to the historic achievement of winning the Gulf title from Doha, enters.
Coach Souza was criticized prior to the delegation's departure to Basra after he announced the final list of the Bahraini national team, which saw him summon only one outright striker, Abdullah Youssef, while the attackers Mohammed Al-Rumaihi, Sayed Hashim Issa, the veteran Ismail Abdul Latif, and the top scorer in the Bahraini league in the last two seasons, the Manama club player Mahdi Abdul-Jabbar, were absent. The squad also witnessed the use of promising players, most notably Ibrahim Al-Khattal, Hamza Idris and Abdullah Al-Khalasi.
It is expected that Souza will rely on his stars, Mahdi Humaidan, Kamil Al-Aswad, Muhammad Jassim Marhoon, Ali Haram, Walid Al-Hayam, Amin bin Uday, Ahmed Bogmar and Jassim Al-Sheikh.
On the other hand, the UAE national team is led by Argentine coach Rodolfo Arwabarina, who was also criticized for not calling the historic UAE national team scorer and top scorer in the UAE Professional League, Ali Mabkhout.
Arwabarina said about the reason for the exclusion, "Ali Mabkhout is a good player and he was with me in the team more than once, but I am looking for other advantages on the field, different from what the player possesses."
He continued, "I know Ali Mabkhout's importance to the team and the fans, but team play is the most important."
Mabkhout is criticized for not adapting to the Argentine coach's style, which relies on pressure and defensive support in counter-attacks.
Aruabarina may miss his best player, Vaio Lima, of Brazilian origin, who suffered a back muscle injury in training, and his participation against Bahrain is in doubt.
The Latin coach will rely on the experience of his goalkeeper Khaled Issa, along with Majid Hassan, Hareb Abdullah Suhail and striker Caio Canedo.
"The national team includes 17 players who are participating for the first time at the international level, supported by some elements of experience," said Yasser Salem, UAE administrator. "However, our goal is clear from the beginning, which is to compete for the title."
He continued, "Our focus is on the Bahrain match, as it is the starting point, and at the same time it will be against the defending champion, who is trained by a good coach, and includes in his squad a group of distinguished players."

The "Olympic Port Stadium" will be a testing ground for the start of Kuwait with its renewed young squad against a Qatari opponent who is competing in the Olympic team, fed by a number of the first team members who participated in the 2022 World Cup.
Al-Azraq is armed with the fact that it is the leader of the “regional championship” with ten titles, and it is self-defeating to return to play the first roles in its favorite competition after years of confusion, problems and suspensions, and forgetting its exit from the group stage in the last two editions, in addition to its failure to reach the 2023 Asian Cup finals. .
Despite his absolute leadership in the championship and being the most goals scored in the history of the Gulf Cup (194 goals), ahead of Saudi Arabia (163) and Qatar (130), this does not intercede for him to be the first candidate to enter the highest point of the podium in Basra in light of the coach’s dependence. Portuguese Roy Pinto attacked a group of young men, most notably Shabib Al-Khalidi, in light of the turning of the page of veteran Bader Al-Mutawa (37 years), who was not summoned.
Among the rising names, Mubarak Al-Fenini, Hassan Hamdan and Mahdi Dashti, stand out, without forgetting the presence of a number of expert names such as Fahd Al-Hajri, Khaled Ibrahim and veteran goalkeeper Suleiman Abdul-Ghafour.
It is worth mentioning that the team's list includes 14 players who have never been in the Gulf championships.
For his part, "Al-Annabi" enters the tournament with three titles in his pocket, in which he shares second place with Saudi Arabia and Iraq behind Kuwait, which he achieved in 1992, 2004 and 2014.
The local federation decided to play the Gulf Cup with the Olympic team, led by its Portuguese coach Bruno Pinheiro, instead of the first team that was coached for a long time by Spaniard Felix Sanchez, before the Qatari federation decided not to renew his contract, which expired after the World Cup, in order to give young players an opportunity to show their potential.
The Qataris view the tournament as an opportunity to heal the wounds of the painful exit from the last World Cup that was held on their land, when their team suffered three consecutive defeats and was eliminated in the group stage.
The Qatari national team suffered a painful blow in the tournament after striker Mohamed Muntari, who scored the only World Cup goal for Annabi in the World Cup against Senegal, was excluded due to injury, to be replaced by Al Gharafa player Ahmed Alaa, and the two players who did not get the full opportunity during the World Cup.
Harmony will be the coach’s obsession with finding a harmonious formation in light of the multiplicity of teams for which the invited elements play. However, the basis will be relying on the players of the first team, such as goalkeeper Mishaal Barshim, defenders Tariq Salman and Hammam Al-Amin, along with midfielders Asim Madibo and Ismail Muhammad, while there are talents that have been proven. In the local league, she may find herself a place in the formation, along the lines of Khaled Mounir, Ahmed Fadel and Nayef Al-Hadrami, in addition to the presence of Ahmed Alaa as a spearhead with expertise and experience.
Former Qatari international Wissam Rizk (41 years), who won the title on two occasions (2004 and 2014) and the current coach of Umm Salal, says, "Our team will participate with new blood and good players who have a great future ahead. Achieving the title does not seem difficult, especially since Al-Annabi is competing with elements grafted with experience and international contacts."
The Kuwaiti and Qatari teams had previously met in the Gulf Cup, which started in 1970, in 18 matches, so the first prevailed on 11 occasions, compared to 6 for the second, while a tie dominated one match.
