European Union leaders continue to search for a solution to the rise in energy prices

Brussels - (AFP) European Union leaders will meet Thursday and Friday in Brussels to try to bridge their divisions and find a common response to soaring energy prices that are causing social unrest.

The war in Ukraine and the sanctions imposed on Russia shocked the prices of oil, gas and electricity. But Europe has been moving slowly since February due to the sometimes conflicting interests of member states.

However, the situation requires rapid action, as thousands of European companies fear for their survival due to competition from the United States and Asia, where prices have remained lower. In Germany and France, thousands of people demonstrated against the high cost of living.
Several diplomats expected the discussions to be long between the leaders of states and governments.

Spain's Minister of Environmental Transition, Teresa Ribera, openly criticized the European Commission's work in an interview with Agence France-Presse.
"The proposals are still a bit shy, we still lack concrete action on most issues. A real effort was made a year ago (...) but it is very unfortunate to see how slow Europe's response to the challenge we face is," she said.

During the recent Prague summit in early October, several leaders attacked the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Kuravici accused her of representing German interests.

Italian Mario Draghi said, according to statements reported to Agence France-Presse, that "seven months of delay is causing us a recession."

However, the President of the European Commission faces divisions among the twenty-seven countries that adopt a different mix of energy sources. Some depend on nuclear power and others on gas or even coal to produce electricity.

These countries are also divided over the issue of capping the price of gas used to produce electricity. Such a mechanism is applied in Spain and Portugal, where it has allowed prices to decline.

And calls for several countries such as France to expand this mechanism, "Iberian" to become at the level of the European Union.

However, Germany opposes this, in addition to several northern countries, including Denmark and the Netherlands, which are reticent about the authorities' interference in the markets.

Berlin believes that lowering prices artificially harms the goal of saving energy and pushes for more consumption.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Thursday that setting a ceiling for gas prices can only succeed through close cooperation with partners from outside the European Union such as South Korea and Japan.

He added, speaking to parliamentarians before the start of the EU summit, that setting a price ceiling "carries the risk that producers will sell their gas elsewhere, and we Europeans will end up with less gas instead of more."

The summit draft results call on the Commission to prepare a proposal on this mechanism.

"The Iberian pattern deserves to be studied," von der Leyen said Wednesday. "Some questions remain, but I don't want to neglect any possibility."

"It is important to move forward more quickly on this front. We should not ask the Commission four times to get a proposal," Teresa Ribera stressed.

Von der Leyen detailed other proposals this week, including organizing gas purchases jointly, new rules in an effort to force gas sharing in Europe to help countries in difficulty, or reforming the gas market index (European Gas Exchange), which is used as a reference in transactions.

A European diplomat said, "There is progress, but without a major breakthrough. The priorities are different. Germany prefers security of supplies because it can afford high prices, but many countries cannot face the cost."

An environmental expert to "Al-Quds": "Indian weaver" bird threatens "Dead Sea dolphin"

Ramallah - exclusive to Al-Quds.com - Environmental expert and Director of the Wildlife Society, Imad Al-Atrash, warned of the danger of the " Indian Weaver ", which is an invasive bird, as it now threatens the "Dead Sea Dormitory".

Al-Atrash told Al-Quds.com: “The Indian weaver came with the Jewish immigration from India in the thirties of the last century, and it is among five invasive birds to Palestine , four of which came from India, and they are songbirds: (Germany, weaver, and Durra). Al-Kabir, Al-Dora Al-Saghir), in addition to the fifth invasive bird, which is the Indian crow, which settles in the Eilat region, as it came with trade caravans and migrations.

The Indian weaver, according to al-Atrash, is a ferocious bird, although it is small in size and weighs between nine and 12 grams. The "weaver" is less common than the "Germany" bird, and its whereabouts have been recorded so far in the Dead Sea, the Jordan Valley and Marj bin Amer, and its presence was recently recorded in Ya`bad area, which raises the alarm about the possibility of its spread and its threat to other types of birds.

Al-Atrash confirms in his interview with Al-Quds.com that despite his small age, the "weaver" is fierce on the "Dead Sea sparrow" (the size and weight of the dead sea sparrow), as it attacks the sparrow weaver, eats its eggs and nests in its place, which warns of the need to develop a plan beforehand. Environmental Quality Authority to confront invasive birds.

The "Dead Sea Dowry" was called by this name, because it lives near the Dead Sea in particular, and it is a bird belonging to the nature of Palestine.

The Mediterranean sea swallows more immigrant Gazans

Gaza - Report by "Al Quds" dot com - The families of 14 young Palestinians living in the southern Gaza Strip are going through difficult hours, after losing contact with their expatriate children, at the beginning of this month, when they were trying to immigrate to Europe across the Mediterranean.

There were conflicting information about the number of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip who were on board the boat, which was carrying dozens of Palestinian refugees in Syria, and of other nationalities, until it sank after it sailed for several miles.

According to the Palestinian embassy in Tunisia , 4 bodies of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip have been identified so far, and many are still missing, indicating that it is following up with the competent authorities on the possibility of transferring the recovered bodies to the Strip, along with the file of the missing.

And the four bodies that were thrown out by the Mediterranean Sea belong to the young men: Adam Muhammad Shaath, Moqbel Majdi Ateem, Younis Haidar Al-Shaer, Muhammad Mahjoub Abdullah.

Among the missing are two brothers from the Al-Shaer family, as family sources told Al-Quds.com.

The families of the drowned said, in separate interviews with Al-Quds.com, that the last contact with their immigrant children was on the fourth of this month, and they were all preparing to immigrate to Italy, and since then the contact with them has been cut off.

Amir Qeshta, the brother of one of the missing youths, said that his brother, along with a group of young men, all of whom are between the ages of (19 to 22 years), decided to migrate from Gaza to search for a better future for them in light of the difficult living conditions that the residents of the Strip live in, the lack of job opportunities, and the unknown future. that surround their lives.

And Qishta said in an interview with our correspondent: The young men left the Gaza Strip last March, heading to Egypt, where they continued to be present for a month, and from there they moved to Libya, where they continued to wait until the beginning of this month until they had the opportunity to obtain a boat that would enable them to migrate. To Italy, especially since there are large numbers of immigrants waiting their turn to migrate by sea.

And that the young men sailed from the coast of the Mediterranean off the Libyan " Sabratha ", before the boat sank off the Tunisian coast on the way to Italy.

He pointed out that the fate of his brother and a group of young men is still unknown, and they are waiting to know the fate of their sons.

A few days ago, a boat that left Turkey towards Greece sank, which led to the death of two other young men from the Gaza Strip, who were trying to reach Europe in search of a safe future. However, the inevitable fate of drowning in the Mediterranean Sea was faster for them than their life. They hope you smile at them.

During the years, the Gaza Strip experienced many tragedies that prompted many citizens, especially young men, to search for emigration. The Mediterranean Sea off the coasts of Egypt, Libya and others swallowed up dozens of bodies of Gazans, including entire families of men, women and children.

The Journalists Syndicate condemns the settlers' abuse of the martyr Abu Aqleh

Ramallah - "Jerusalem" dot com - The Journalists Syndicate condemned today, Monday, the settlers' attack on the press crews in the occupied city of Jerusalem, during their coverage of the events of the "March of the Flags" yesterday, and some of them verbally abused the martyred journalist Sherine Abu Aqleh.

The Syndicate said, in a press statement, that the settlers, under the protection of the occupation forces, deliberately assaulted a number of journalists physically and verbally, and some made racist expressions, and stole their mobile phones.

The Syndicate considered that the approach of targeting journalists is rooted in the mentality of the occupation and settlers alike, and this was evident from the assault and abuse of journalists, and from the expressions made by settlers expressing their joy at the martyrdom of colleague Sherine Abu Aqleh.

The Syndicate renewed its call for international institutions to provide field protection for Palestinian journalists who have become targets of the occupation forces and settlers, without accountability or supervision.

In her statement, she indicated that settler attacks on each of fellow journalists were documented: Layal Eid, Najwan Al-Samri, Lana Kamela, and Ahmed Jaber, and the theft of two mobile phones of colleagues Maysa Abu Ghazaleh and Heba Al-Najdi.

Ukrainian grain exports stopped in the Black Sea

Istanbul - (AFP) - The Joint Coordination Center in charge of supervising the implementation of an international agreement signed for the export of Ukrainian grain announced that no movement of cargo ships transporting Ukrainian grain was recorded in the Black Sea on Sunday.

"It was not possible to reach an agreement in the Joint Coordination Center regarding the movement of cargo ships leaving and entering on October 30," the center said in a statement published at night after Moscow announced the suspension of its participation in the agreement, which was signed on July 22 in Istanbul, under the pretext of an attack by marches on its ships.

The center, which includes representatives of Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and the United Nations in Istanbul, stated that it had informed Russia of its "concern over the security of cargo ships" and had conveyed these concerns to the Turkish and Ukrainian delegations.

He added, "The United Nations Coordinator of the Grain Initiative in the Black Sea, Amir Abdullah, informed today (October 29) from the Russian delegation to the Joint Coordination Center of his concerns about the security of the movement of commercial ships."

He added, "Abdullah conveyed (these concerns) to the Turkish and Ukrainian delegations at the joint coordination center."

No official Turkish position has yet been issued on this announcement.

A security source told AFP on Saturday evening that "Turkey has not been officially informed" of the Russian withdrawal.

"The Joint Coordination Center is studying the latest developments, assessing their impact on its operations, and discussing the next stages," he added.

On Saturday, nine cargo ships were able to use the sea passage in the Black Sea, "and there are more than ten other (ships)" ready for that in both directions, according to the center that oversees the implementation of the agreement.

This agreement specifically provides for the inspection of cargo ships traveling the Bosphorus in both directions, whether empty or loaded, by five teams consisting of two inspectors for each of Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and the United Nations.

Since the beginning of this month, Ukraine has criticized the slowness of the inspections, accusing Russia of obstructing the process.

The center estimated during the current week more than 170 the number of cargo ships ready for inspection off Istanbul.

The agreement, which entered into force on August 1, allowed the export of more than nine million tons of grain and other agricultural products from Ukrainian ports, according to the center.

Abu Rahma: We warn against forcing shepherds to obtain permits because of the pastoral outposts

Ramallah - exclusively for "Jerusalem" - Abdullah Abu Rahma, Director of the Popular Action Department in the Wall Resistance and Settlement Commission, warned against forcing sheep shepherds , especially in Bedouin communities, to obtain permits for grazing, in the event that the Israeli occupation authorities legalize the pastoral outposts that have been established in areas classified as C.

Abu Rahma said in an interview with Al-Quds.com: "The goal of legalizing these outposts is to control more land, and harass Palestinians, especially shepherds in Bedouin communities, where the occupation authorities are trying to set conditions for the legalization of these outposts for settlers, including The lands on which the outposts are built must be state lands, as well as obtaining permits for grazing.

Abu Rahma continued, "Issuing these permits to settlers means giving free rein to the settlers, in exchange for harassing the Palestinians. If the shepherds were allowed, it would be through a process of impediment, thus preventing the entry of pastoral lands and displacing the shepherds, in return for encouraging the pastoral outposts and increasing their spread."

According to Abu Rahma, the pastoral settlement outposts, even if they were established on several dunums, control hundreds of dunums in their surroundings, and there is currently talk about these outposts controlling about 240,000 dunums.

Abu Rahma stressed that there is a noticeable increase in the number of pastoral settlement outposts, which reached 66 in the last ten years in different areas of the West Bank, and among those outposts were 46 that were established during the last five years, and all 66 outposts controlled an area of 240 One thousand dunams, in contrast, all the settlements established on the lands of the West Bank control 67 thousand dunams, which means controlling more land because of that outpost.

According to Abu Rahma, there is talk of a plan to legalize 30 pastoral outposts, by trying to enact laws to legitimize them.

Abu Rahma pointed out that there is cooperation between the Civil Administration of the occupation army and settler organizations, noting the cooperation of the Civil Administration with the secretary of the "Amanah" movement, Ze'ev Hefer, which has been operating since the eighties of the last century, and has a series of companies aimed at leaking lands, noting that Hefer is One of the plotters to assassinate mayors in the West Bank in the 1980s.

On the other hand, Abu Rahma affirms that despite these Israeli attempts, we must not surrender, we must continue the resistance until the last breath, and reject the displacement process, and work must be done to strengthen the steadfastness of the citizens in the areas targeted by those outposts, and there must be a movement A broad Palestinian diplomat, as well as the pursuit of international law, to try to repel that settlement attack.

The occupation's endeavor to legalize pastoral settlement outposts comes as part of attempts to control areas classified as "C", which constitute 60% of the area of the West Bank.

Martin Bashir apologizes to Princess Diana's sons after the 1995 interview cheating scandal

Russia returns to the grain export agreement and the resumption of ship movement in the Black Sea

Kiev (Ukraine) - (AFP) - Russia Wednesday resumed its participation in the Ukraine grain export agreement after receiving "written guarantees" from Ukraine that the corridor used for its transportation would be demilitarized.

For its part, the United States has expressed "growing concern" about Russia's possible use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine, while Moscow has in recent months doubled its threats and reassurance efforts.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose country is considered a guarantor of this crucial agreement to secure global food supplies, confirmed the resumption of Ukrainian exports in the Black Sea , as of Wednesday noon, through this safe passage.

"Russia considers that the guarantees it has received so far seem sufficient and is resuming implementation of the agreement," the Russian Defense Ministry said via Telegram.

On Wednesday evening, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the continuation of the grain export agreement across the Black Sea, "which is important for the whole world."

"Today we achieved an important diplomatic result for our country and for the whole world: the implementation of the (Ukrainian) grain export initiative will continue," Zelensky said in his daily speech, which is posted on social media.

Zelensky considered that Russia's demand for guarantees to resume its participation in the Ukrainian grain export agreement "shows the failure of its aggression" against his country.

On Wednesday, US State Department spokesman Ned Price called for a renewal of the agreement, saying this would enhance the ability to secure "stability in this market and, most importantly, downward pressure" on basic foodstuffs in the world.
On Wednesday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres "warmly" welcomed Russia's return to commitment to the effects of the agreement, according to his spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

On Saturday, Moscow suspended its participation in the grain deal after a march attack on its fleet stationed in Sebastopol Bay in Crimea, which it annexed. The Russian army held Ukraine responsible for this operation with the help of "British experts" and confirmed that it was carried out from the sea lane designated for Ukrainian exports.

It appears that a series of phone calls in recent days between Russian and Turkish officials, particularly Tuesday between Erdogan and President Vladimir Putin, and the UN mediation, the other guarantor of the agreement, have persuaded Moscow to reconsider its position.

"Thanks to the participation of an international organization, as well as Turkey's cooperation, the necessary written guarantees have been obtained from Ukraine that the humanitarian corridor and specific Ukrainian ports for the export of agricultural products will not be used to carry out hostile actions against Russia," the Russian military said.

But Putin threatened, on Wednesday, that Russia would again withdraw from the agreement to export Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea, in the event that Kiev “violated the guarantees” requested by Moscow.

Meanwhile, fears are growing of a possible Russian nuclear strike in Ukraine, after the United States on Wednesday expressed "growing concern" about this possibility, according to White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby.

Kirby's remarks came in the wake of an article published by the "New York Times" newspaper, which indicated that high-ranking Russian officers had recently discussed the timing and how to use a tactical nuclear weapon in Ukraine, referring to a bomb that is weaker than a nuclear bomb.

On Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov considered it "irresponsible" for Western media to "deliberately exaggerate the issue of nuclear weapons."

The other threat came from the former Russian president, a senior official in the National Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev.

On Tuesday, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of the National Security Council, again referred to nuclear weapons, warning Ukraine against seeking to recover all the territories occupied by Russia.

Medvedev said that Ukraine's goal of regaining all its Russian-occupied territories, including the Donbass region and Crimea, would be "a threat to the existence of our state."

On Wednesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said the "top priority" was to avoid war between nuclear powers, which would have "catastrophic consequences".

Russia accuses Ukraine of preparing to use dirty bombs against Russian forces, but Kiev suspects that Russia may take the initiative to attribute the attack to Ukraine in an attempt to justify Moscow's subsequent resort to nuclear weapons after it recently suffered losses in eastern and southern Ukraine.

On the front, the Ukrainian General Staff reported Wednesday that battles were going on in the east and that 25 towns in the east, center and south were being bombed.

The governor of Donetsk region in the east, Pavlo Kirilenko, reported that four civilians were killed in the past 24 hours.

AFP correspondents reported great damage in the village of Belozerka on the Kherson front in the south, the regional capital where Russian forces are fortifying their positions in preparation for an upcoming Ukrainian attack.

In Belozerka, Russian forces are shelling from the southern end of the road, in the position where they have holed up since their withdrawal from that town in March.

"At first we only thought that the invasion was over. But now it seems normal. We are used to it," said Angelika Borisenko, 20, a resident of the town.

And on Monday, Russia launched a series of cruise missile strikes on Kiev and the Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, which led to water and electricity cuts, especially in Kiev.

And on Wednesday, the Ukrainian Electricity Company announced new rationing of electricity, while the mayor of the Ukrainian capital, Vitali Klitschko, promised to publish a thousand "heating points" for the population by winter.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the Russian strikes destroyed 40 percent of Ukraine's energy facilities, prompting the country to stop its exports to the European Union, where prices are skyrocketing.

Morocco arrests two people suspected of human smuggling near the border with Algeria

Rabat (AFP) - Moroccan police announced Thursday the arrest of two sub-Saharan Africans suspected of preparing an attempt to illegally enter the Spanish enclave of Melilla in northern Morocco.

The two men were placed in pretrial detention after their arrest on Wednesday evening in Oujda (northeast), near the border with Algeria , according to a statement issued by the General Directorate of National Security, which did not specify their nationalities.

The statement added that their arrest came hours after the arrest of 55 irregular immigrants, including 13 minors from Sudan, Chad and Algeria, who entered Moroccan territory illegally.

The General Directorate of National Security confirmed that after a search of their home, passports, a laptop computer, money in Moroccan and foreign currency, and receipts for money transfers were confiscated.

It also discovered 274 iron hooks for use in climbing the metal fences on the borders of the Spanish enclave.

And she added that he was suspected of "being involved in preparing to organize an illegal immigration operation by climbing the fence separating the cities of Nador and Melilla."

On Sunday, the Moroccan authorities arrested a group of 25 irregular Sudanese and Chadian immigrants near Nador, according to a judicial source.

It also indicated that it had dismantled in October and August in Oujda a network for forging documents with the aim of obtaining Schengen visas.

On June 24, about 2,000 migrants from Sudan attempted to enter the Spanish enclave by force through the Nador border crossing, killing 23 migrants, according to an official Moroccan toll.

And this tragedy is the deadliest of all among the many attempts of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa to enter the Spanish enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta, which represent the only land borders of the European Union with the African continent.

According to human rights organizations, this came as a result of the resumption of cooperation in the field of migration between Rabat and Madrid, following their reconciliation in March, after a year of diplomatic dispute.

Heat waves cost poor countries more than rich countries and exacerbate inequality

Washington (AFP) - Heat waves intensified by climate change have cost the global economy trillions of dollars in the past 30 years, a study published Friday showed, with poor countries paying the heaviest price.

Likewise, these unbalanced economic effects contribute to widening inequalities around the world, according to the study.

"The cost of extreme heat waves caused by climate change has so far been disproportionately borne by countries and regions that are least responsible for climate warming," Justin Mankin, a professor at Dartmouth College and one of the authors of the study published in the journal Science Advances, told AFP. ".

"Climate change comes at a time when economic inequality prevails in the world, and is exacerbating it," he added.

The study showed that periods of extreme heat waves between 1992 and 2013 cost the global economy about $16 trillion.
But while rich countries lost about 1.5 percent of their annual per capita GDP while dealing with heatwaves, poor countries lost about 6.7 percent of their annual per capita GDP.

The reason for this disparity is simple, and it is due to the fact that poor countries are often located near the tropics, which naturally makes their climate warmer. During heat waves, it gets exceptionally hot.

This study was published days before the start of the Climate Summit (COP 27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, where it is expected that the issue of compensating the countries most vulnerable to the repercussions of climate change, despite being the least responsible for this phenomenon, will be one of the main topics.

The costs of heatwaves come from many factors: the fallout on agriculture, strained health systems, a less productive workforce, and damage to infrastructure, such as melting roads.

The researchers involved in the study focused on the five hottest days each year in certain regions where extreme heat waves are considered extreme weather phenomena.

"The general idea is to look at the differences in temperature extremes (...) and see how much that is reflected in the differences in economic growth" for each region, Mankin said.

"Then, in the next step, we look at how human-caused climate change affects these temperature extremes," he added.

But the results of the study almost certainly underestimate the true cost of extreme heat waves, according to the research, as studying only five days a year does not reflect the increasing frequency of these climatic phenomena, and not all potential costs are included.

Previous studies on this topic have focused on the costs of heatwaves in specific sectors, although scientists say it is important to look at the costs of climate change comprehensively.

"You want to know what those costs are so that you have a frame of reference against which to compare the cost of taking action," Mankin said, for example setting up cooling centers or installing air conditioners against "the cost of inaction."

"The economic gains from responding to the five hottest days of the year could be enormous," he added.

But Mankin noted that the most important response is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to slow climate warming at the source.
"We must adapt to the climate in which we live now, and we must invest heavily to combat climate change," he concluded.

Seoul and Washington respond to Pyongyang by firing four ballistic missiles towards the sea

Seoul - (AFP) - The South Korean and US militaries Wednesday launched four short-range surface-to-surface ballistic missiles at imaginary targets at sea, in response to North Korea's launch on Tuesday of a medium-range ballistic missile that flew over Japan five years ago.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement that both the South Korean and US armies fired two Atacams missiles at mock targets in the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan.

The statement indicated that the firing of these short-range ballistic missiles took place "to accurately hit an imaginary target."

The General Staff added that these exercises "showed that we are able and ready to eliminate the source of provocation while maintaining a continuous monitoring position.

In its statement, the South Korean army pointed out that a missile launched by its units fell shortly after its launch and crashed, without causing any injuries due to its failure.

On Tuesday morning, North Korea launched a medium-range ballistic missile that flew over Japan before falling into the Pacific Ocean, in an unprecedented event since 2017 that prompted Tokyo to activate the warning system and ask residents of some areas to take shelter.

Pyongyang, which possesses nuclear weapons, this year conducted a series of tests at an unprecedented pace. These tests culminated last week when the North Korean army fired four short-range ballistic missiles.

In Washington , US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said in an interview with CNN that these exercises aim to "make sure that our military capabilities are ready to respond to the North's provocations if necessary."

"It should not come to that. We have made it clear to Kim Jong-un that we are ready to sit at the negotiating table without preconditions. We want to see a denuclearized Korean peninsula," he added.

Kirby lamented that the North Korean leader "has not shown an inclination to move in this direction - and quite frankly he is moving in the opposite direction by continuing to conduct these missile tests in violation of UN Security Council resolutions."

South Korean President Yoon Sok-yul condemned North Korea's launch of a medium-range ballistic missile on Tuesday, and pledged a "firm response" to this "provocation".

Hours after the North Korean missile test, South Korean and American fighters conducted maneuvers on Tuesday, during which two South Korean F-15K fighters dropped bombs on an imaginary target in the Yellow Sea.

The last time a North Korean missile flew over Japan dates back to 2017, at the height of the "fire and fury" phase, during which North Korean leader Kim Jong-un sparred with US President Donald Trump at the time.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the North Korean missile test, considering it a "clear escalation," while US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida condemned it "in the strongest terms."

Pyongyang has intensified its banned weapons programs in light of stalled negotiations with the United States, conducting a record number of military tests this year and passing a new law allowing it to carry out pre-emptive nuclear strikes, including in response to attacks with conventional weapons, in a move that made its nuclear power "irreversible". in it".

On September 30, Seoul, Tokyo and Washington conducted three anti-submarine exercises, in a precedent of its kind in five years. These exercises came days after large-scale maneuvers conducted by the US and South Korean navies off the peninsula.

And North Korea, which is subject to UN sanctions because of its banned weapons programs, usually tries to conduct its military experiments at a time that increases its geopolitical burden.

Recently, US and South Korean officials have warned that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is preparing to conduct a new nuclear test.

South Korean intelligence agencies have reported that this nuclear test could take place between the Chinese Communist Party congress on October 16 and the US mid-term presidential elections on November 7.

Concern is growing over North Korea's possession of nuclear weapons, as it, unlike other nuclear powers, does not consider that these weapons constitute only a deterrent and should not be used at all.

Pyongyang has conducted six nuclear tests since 2006, the most recent of which was the most powerful in 2017.

"I love you mom" from Gaza to Nablus

Written by: Bakr Abu Bakr

The battle of the unity of the arenas in which the occupying forces wage war against every moving object, whether human or animal, moving from Hebron to Gaza and from Jenin to Rafah. Hardly a day goes by without a martyr ascending, followed by a martyr, and the prayers of mothers with the destruction of the structure of illusions settled in the souls of the eternal patients of racism and ethnic cleansing, from the Nakba onwards, rising to the sky.

If we talk about the steadfast Hebron, we will not deny her her right of steadfastness, steadfastness, and bond, for she is the equivalent of Jerusalem in holiness and courage, as is the case when talking about Rafah Al-Shumukh or any of the proud villages and cities of Palestine. We do not go far, as coastal cities in Palestine, such as Acre, Jaffa, and Haifa, resist the "Biblical nuclei" that reoccupy Palestine, as is the case in the Negev and the North. And in the heart of the West Bank, the struggle over land and the real story versus the myth is still raging, and it appears that it will not end soon.

The "Biblical nuclei" in the cities of the Palestinian coast inside Israel are currently teeming with religious Zionism, which took the resettlement of these places as an entry point to expel the indigenous Palestinian Arab citizens, in an unmistakable indication of the alliance of the racist right with extremist rabbis and leaders of genocide inside "Israel". The story is hardly It ends until its fire begins to ignite in an existential struggle, whenever the signs of raising the head to catch a breath approach, soon the fanatical extremists rush to dip the head in the water.

Difficult days passed in the cities of the West Bank in the current and last two months, and you can count all the days with the same amount of difficulty, and Gaza passed three compelling days in which stones and people were destroyed under flimsy names and cheerful and flashy metaphors, but they hide the buried hatred and the racist mind in what the leadership called the Zionist eradication of aggression. the rising of dawn”, which is the disappearance of justice in truth and the beginning of terrorism.

Airstrikes and missiles multiply to kill in Jenin and Nablus, as well as in Rafah, Khan Yunis, and Jabalya. They do not differentiate between the battlefields. Jihad believed when it called the outcome a “battle of the battlefields.” It is really so for the Israelis, who, as their aggression increases and their ferocity increases, the battlefields become unified, and the field factions unified, awaiting an agreement. Political leaders who, if they ignore or turn a blind eye to the masses' turmoil and the unity of the arenas, will wither and tremble from what is to come.

The official spokesman for the Palestinian Presidency, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, said on 9/8/2022 AD that the occupation is approaching a comprehensive confrontation with our entire Palestinian people, through its comprehensive aggression that started from the city of Jerusalem, and then extended to Jenin, Gaza, and Nablus, which claimed its lives. Three martyrs and dozens of wounded.

In addition, the "Fatah" movement mourned its sons, the martyrs Ibrahim Al-Nabulsi, Islam Sobouh, and Hussein Taha, who were killed by the bullets of the Israeli occupation army in the old city of Nablus.

All forces, factions, activists, and national figures condemned the occupation’s crimes against our people, the latest of which was its heinous crime in the city of Nablus, after storming its old town and bombing one of its houses with missiles, and the accompanying deliberate shooting at defenseless civilians, which resulted in the death of three resistance fighters. : Ibrahim al-Nabulsi, Islam Sobouh, and Hussein Jamal Taha, and more than 69 male and female citizens were wounded.

“I love you, my mother” were the last words of the last martyr until then, and they are the same words that you can hear in the north and south, so do not differentiate between the mother of each person, and the motherland of each person. And the homeland is from the mother who plants, waters, cultivates, and nurtures, so it blooms, and the flowers have nothing but to spread their fragrance in the sky of Palestine, so we scatter it, we splurge and rise, and we can not do that, and the fragrance of the martyrs fills the ether. We wake up to the sound of the trio, from Al-Hamra to Al-Fardan to Abu Iyad to Al-Nabulsi.

Official and factional bodies condemn the crime of occupation in Jenin

Governorates - "Jerusalem" dot com - On Thursday, official and factional bodies condemned the Israeli occupation's crime that took place at dawn today in the Jenin camp and led to the martyrdom of the teacher Jawad Bawaqa (58 years) and the young man Adham Jabarin (27 years).

The head of the National Council, Ruhi Fattouh, held Netanyahu's fascist government and its coalition of criminal record holders fully responsible for this crime, which was carried out by death squads and snipers from the occupation army.

In a press statement, Fattouh called on the United Nations and the international community to assume their responsibilities towards the Palestinian people and the crimes committed against them.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates also condemned the occupation's violations against the Palestinian people, foremost of which are the bloody incursions that leave martyrs, injuries and arrests.

In a statement, the ministry considered that these crimes fall within the framework of a dangerous official Israeli escalation that aims to explode the conflict arena and plunge it into a spiral of violence that is difficult to control, thus facilitating the implementation of the programs of the extreme right-wing Netanyahu government.

It also considered that these violations fall within the framework of the plans of the extreme right-wing Netanyahu government aimed at achieving the broadest process of gradual and silent annexation of the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and changing its reality by the occupation force by creating new facts on the ground that are difficult to overcome in any future negotiations between the Palestinian and Israeli sides. Its continuity and deepening is to resolve the future of the final issues of the conflict by one side and by the occupying power through more imposition of illegal unilateral measures.

The ministry warned against the consequences of the ruling Israeli right-wing employing its religious narratives with the aim of achieving more of its expansionist colonial projects, which leads to concealing the political nature of the conflict and replacing it with a religious one.

It welcomed the positions of countries that sided with international law and resolutions of international legitimacy, affirmed adherence to the two-state solution, and demanded the cessation of all illegal unilateral measures and an end to the occupation, stressing the importance of restoring the negotiating political horizon to resolve the conflict, demanding translating words into actions that guarantee international protection for our people and compel the Israeli government to Engaging in a political, negotiating track leading to the implementation of international legitimacy resolutions on the situation in occupied Palestine, calling on him to get out of the framework of temporary reactions, diagnosing the situation, expressing concern, and being satisfied with some press releases towards taking the necessary measures to implement the principle of the supremacy of international law on the situation in occupied Palestine.

For its part, Hamas mourned the two martyrs from the Jenin camp, praising the resistance fighters' resistance to the occupation's aggression against the various cities of the West Bank.

Hamas said, "This aggression will increase our people's determination to resist and defend themselves, their rights, and their sanctities, and our heroes who pledged to sacrifice the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque will not be intimidated, and let the occupation and its settlers wait for their faces to become bad and disturb them until they disappear from our land and our sanctities." according to the text of its statement.

The "Islamic Jihad" movement also mourned the two martyrs, Jabarin and Bouaqta, noting the role of the martyr Adham in defending the Palestinian people and clashing with the occupation, stressing that the crime of his assassination will not go unpunished.

And Islamic Jihad said in a statement, "This pure blood will increase the flames of revenge and the determination of the resistance fighters to continue the path until the liberation of our land and our sanctities."

For its part, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine affirmed that the blood of the martyrs will not be wasted, and will pave the way for liberation and return, noting that this new crime calls for more solidarity and unity. As stated in its statement.

The People's Assembly stressed the need for field unity in confronting the occupation's plans and its criminal and terrorist tendencies, which are increasingly brutal under the fascist government, and adopting comprehensive resistance as a way to confront aggression. according to the text of its statement.

She said, "The response to the ongoing crimes of the occupation against our people is to direct more painful blows to this enemy and its security services by expanding the circle of engagement, and extending the resistance in all the cities, camps and villages of our occupied lands, especially since our people, as they have always proven, are capable of paying the entity a heavy price." ".

The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine also mourned the two martyrs, stressing that the crimes of the occupation and the fire that it ignites will inevitably rebound against it due to the resistance of our people, which will not be complacent in the face of its aggression and crimes, despite the official Arab silence and the hypocrisy of the international community and the reluctance of the official leadership of the authority and the organization to take measures to respond to the aggression of the occupation. Including the implementation of Palestinian legitimacy decisions. according to the text of its statement.

In its statement, the Front stressed that ending the division, restoring national unity, and drawing up a struggle strategy are the main conditions for victory over the occupation, sweeping it off our land, and embodying national independence, and that there is no alternative to the resistance that our people adopt in the face of the orgy of the occupation and settlers, and as for the suspicious calls and Western and American advice to call for calm With the occupation, it is rejected, so there is no truce with the occupation and its crimes. Feeling her statement.

She said: The resistance and its escalation on the ground leading to an uprising and disobedience in the face of the occupation, are the only ones capable of changing the equation and forcing the international community to overcome the state of hypocrisy and double standards, and to strengthen solidarity and support public opinion for the struggle of our people.

Warming in the Middle East is twice as fast as the global rate

Nicosia - (AFP) - A new climate study showed that the Middle East region is getting warmer twice more than the global average, which could have devastating effects on its people and economies.

As a result, more than 400 million people in the region are at risk of exposure to extreme heat waves, prolonged drought, and rising sea levels, according to the study, to which a large number of researchers contributed and whose results were published two months before the United Nations Climate Conference (COP27) hosted by Egypt. .

The study showed an average increase of 0.45 degrees Celsius per decade in the Middle East and the eastern basin of the Mediterranean, based on data collected between 1981 and 2019, when the global average increase was 0.27 degrees per decade.

The study warns that, in the absence of immediate changes, the region's average temperature is expected to rise by five degrees Celsius by the end of the century, which could exceed "critical thresholds for human adaptation" in some countries.

Populations "will face significant health and livelihood challenges, including disadvantaged communities, the elderly and pregnant women," says Yos Lielefeld of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry and the Cyprus Institute, two entities that contributed to the study.

The study covers the region from Greece to Egypt, passing through Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Iran.

The study indicates that the Middle East region will not only suffer greatly from climate change, but will also be a major contributor to its occurrence. The results show that this oil-rich region could soon become one of the major sources of greenhouse gas emissions, overtaking the European Union within a few years.

"Since the repercussions of climate change transcend borders, close cooperation between the countries concerned is necessary to deal with the harmful effects of this phenomenon," Lelieveld adds.

George Zitis, one of the authors of the study, warns that the expansion of arid zones and sea level rise "will lead to significant changes in coastal areas and agriculture", especially in Egypt's Nile Delta.

According to the study, "almost all areas of life" will be "severely affected" by increased rates of heat and drought. This is likely to contribute to an increase in the death rate and exacerbate the "disparities between the rich and the poorest" in the region.

In November, representatives of about two hundred countries are scheduled to meet at the "COP27" conference in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh on the Red Sea, to follow up on the situation in terms of commitments related to the Paris Agreement signed in 2015, which aims to contain global warming. by less than 2°C by 2100, and if possible by less than 1.5°C.

The planet's temperature has risen by about 1.2 degrees since the pre-industrial era. In May, the United Nations World Meteorological Organization said there was a one in two chance of reaching the 1.5°C target within the next five years.

Hurricane Fiona is intensifying and hitting the Turks and Caicos Islands

Nagua (Dominican Republic) (AFP) - Hurricane Fiona strengthened to a category 3 storm and moved towards the Turks and Caicos Islands after killing two people and causing floods and power outages in the Caribbean.

The hurricane is accompanied by winds approaching 185 kilometers per hour that hit the British Overseas Territory and is expected to intensify, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

"Heavy rain in the vicinity of the center of Fiona, affecting the Turks and Caicos this afternoon, with continuous heavy rain posing a threat to life," the center said in a warning, adding that forecasts expected the storm to pass near the island chain within hours.

The hurricane claimed two lives, one of whom was a man whose house was washed away in Guadeloupe, a French overseas territory, and the other in the Dominican Republic who died while he was cutting down a tree to shelter from the storm.

Dominican President Luis Abi Nader declared three provinces in the east of the country as disaster areas.

Many roads were submerged by flood waters or cut off due to uprooted trees or electricity poles, in the vicinity of the well-known resort town of Punta Cana in the province of Altagracia, an AFP correspondent witnessed.

Video footage broadcast by local media showed residents of the town of Igui on the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic trying to save their belongings after the water reached waist-high.

The National Hurricane Center said "heavy rains and localized, life-threatening flash floods" would continue over parts of the Dominican Republic on Tuesday.

In Puerto Rico, the hurricane caused landslides, cut roads, uprooted trees, power lines and bridges, according to Governor Pedro Piarluisi.

The hurricane deprived nearly 800,000 people of drinking water due to power outages and flooding of rivers, according to officials.

Puerto Rico was devastated in 2017 as a result of hurricanes Irma and Maria, which severely damaged the electricity grid, which was privatized in June 2021 with the aim of solving the problem of power outages, but the island witnessed power outages again in April 2022.

Jerusalem-Ramallah buses will stop operating tomorrow

The workers of the Jerusalem - Ramallah Bus Company announced that they will stop working tomorrow, Monday, due to "the company's management not fulfilling its obligations towards workers in terms of salaries and legal rights similar to employees."

A statement issued by the workers said: "They work with honesty and sincerity, but they were forced to take this step and stop work if their salaries were not paid and their needs and obligations were not met. They also demanded equal wages as drivers as their fellow drivers in other companies."

The company's management said in a statement today, Sunday, that it had not reached an agreement with the "Israeli Ministry of Transportation" until the moment.

It is noteworthy that the strike of the company's employees will disrupt the movement of Jerusalemites to and from their schools and workplaces, passing through Wadi al-Joz, Sheikh Jarrah, Shuafat, Beit Hanina, Qalandia and Ramallah.

Prosecuting a news website in Tunisia for criticizing the prime minister

Tunis - (AFP) - The Tunisian Journalists Syndicate denounced, on Tuesday, the authorities' efforts to "intimidate the media" after the Minister of Justice filed a lawsuit against a news website that criticized Prime Minister Najlaa Boudin.

Last Thursday, the Tunisian news website "Business News" published an article in French entitled "Naglaa Boudin, the nice woman," in which it dealt with her government performance.

The article stated that the prime minister "has been in office in the Kasbah (palace) since October 11, 2021 (...) and has not achieved anything in 13 months of rule," during which the social and economic situation deteriorated with a government that "did not stop disrupting the economic fabric." .

Under a presidential decree criticized by local and international NGOs as "repressive," Justice Minister Leila Jaffal on Friday filed a lawsuit against "Business News" for "defamation" and "publishing false news and attributing untrue matters to a public official."

The website is the first media outlet to be prosecuted since President Kais Saied issued Decree 54 on September 16, which was strongly criticized by civil society.

The decree provides for a five-year prison sentence and a fine of 50,000 Tunisian dinars (15,500 euros) for anyone who “deliberately uses communication networks and information systems to produce, promote, publish or send false information or false rumors.”

The decree targets people who commit such acts "with the aim of attacking others, harming public security, or spreading panic" among citizens. According to the decree, the penalty becomes "double" if the target is a public employee.

AFP contacted the Communications Department of the Ministry of Justice, but the latter refused to provide information about the case.

On Monday, the Anti-Crime Squad in the capital, Tunis, summoned the director of the site, Nizar Bahloul, and listened to him, according to what the latter told Agence France-Presse.

Bahloul added that the questions related to the content of the article and the terminology used, explaining that he did not know whether the case had been closed.

For her part, Amira Mohamed, vice president of the National Syndicate of Tunisian Journalists, said in a statement to Agence France-Presse that "there is no defamation in the Business News article, and recourse to the judiciary proves the authorities' will to intimidate the media and journalists into silence."

"We condemn this kind of repressive practices under a text that restricts freedoms," she added.

Several local and international NGOs express their regret for the "decline" of freedoms in Tunisia since President Said Kamel assumed the executive and legislative powers on July 25, 2021.

Hurricane Fiona reaches Canada after passing near the Bermuda archipelago

Montreal, (AFP) - Hurricane Fiona Saturday made landfall in Nova Scotia, Canada, the US National Hurricane Center said, packing winds of up to 144 kilometers per hour and torrential rain.

The US National Hurricane Center predicted "it will be a powerful hurricane" when it makes landfall. Canada issued severe weather warnings for most of its eastern coast.

The Canadian Hurricane Center reported strong winds were recorded in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, the Magdalen Islands and western Newfoundland.

"It will definitely be a historic and extremely dangerous event for eastern Canada," said Bob Robicho, a meteorologist at the Canadian Hurricane Center, to reporters before the hurricane made landfall.

"It's a big hurricane (...) all that momentum is inside the storm, so it's very difficult for something like this to calm down," he added.

In the latest bulletin issued by the Canadian Hurricane Center, it was stated that weather conditions will improve in western Nova Scotia and eastern New Brunswick on Saturday.

At 9 a.m. GMT, the hurricane was in Nova Scotia, about 210 kilometers northeast of Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia, and was moving north-northwest at 65 kilometers per hour, according to the Canadian Hurricane Center.

Nova Scotia authorities sent an emergency alert to phones saying that a power outage was likely and people should stay inside with supplies to last them for at least 72 hours.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the storm as "bad," noting that it "could have significant impacts across the region."

In Halifax, stores have sold out of propane gas cylinders for camping stoves as residents stock up on large quantities.

"I'm hoping the hurricane will slow down when it hits the cold water, but it doesn't look like it will," Dave Boyce, who works for the Northern Yacht Club in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, told Canadian television.

The Bermuda archipelago had earlier called on residents to stay indoors as strong winds blew, but no deaths or major damage were reported as Hurricane Fiona passed about 161 km west of the island.

And the region, located 1,000 kilometers from the United States and frequent by hurricanes, is one of the most isolated places in the world, which makes evacuating it almost impossible in the event of an emergency.

Hurricane Fiona killed four people in Puerto Rico, an American region, and one death was reported in Guadeloupe, which is French, and two in the Dominican Republic, where a state of emergency was declared in three provinces in the east.
