Two dead, 40 injured, and thousands displaced as a result of Cyclone Tej in Yemen

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said yesterday, Wednesday, that Cyclone Tej, which struck a number of governorates in southern and eastern Yemen recently, caused two deaths and injured 40 people, forcing more than 13,000 to flee, most of them children, and damaging hundreds of homes.


According to a brief statement by UNICEF on the X platform, Al-Mahra Governorate in the east of the country, located on the border with the Sultanate of Oman, was the most affected by the hurricane, with two dead and 40 others injured, in addition to the displacement of more than 11,900, including 6,188 children. She pointed out that the hurricane caused the displacement of 1,400 people, including 728 children, in Hadramaut Governorate, while damaging up to 500 homes in the Socotra Archipelago on the Indian Ocean.


Meanwhile, local authorities and residents said that Al-Raydah and Qusayr District in Hadramaut Governorate suffered major damage yesterday, Wednesday, from Cyclone Tej. The people were stranded as a result of the heavy rains and torrential floods, and homes were destroyed. The governor of Hadhramaut, Mabkhout bin Madi, said that there were no deaths as a result of the hurricane so far.
