Israel Hume: New attempts at rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Israel

The Hebrew newspaper Israel Hayom claimed, on Sunday, that there is cautious optimism in Israel regarding the possibility of success in new attempts at rapprochement with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

According to the Hebrew newspaper, the prominent Republican Senator, Bindsey Graham, is leading efforts to bridge the gap between the two sides, and he had visited Riyadh recently before heading to Tel Aviv.

It quoted US sources as saying that Saudi Arabia has 4 main demands that it presented to the United States, including the establishment of a defense alliance, the establishment of a nuclear reactor for civilian purposes, the improvement of joint trade, and an end to criticism against it over the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

A senior US official told the Hebrew newspaper that Washington is studying the demands presented by Saudi Arabia as a condition for progress towards normalization between Riyadh and Tel Aviv, and that this issue is expected to continue for several months to be decided by the US administration, which Graham announced his support for any step in this direction, although he belongs to to the rival party.

According to the newspaper, it is not known what is Tel Aviv's position on the Saudi request regarding the development of Saudi nuclear capabilities for civilian purposes, which is the most sensitive issue from its point of view.

The newspaper claims that the Palestinian issue, despite the kingdom's statements, was not included in Saudi Arabia's list of demands.
