German Championship: European conflict rages with Union Berlin tied and Freiburg winning

The struggle intensified for the third and fourth places that qualified for the Champions League next season, after Union Berlin tied with its guest Bochum 1-1 and Freiburg beat its host Werder Bremen 2-1, in the twenty-eighth stage of the German Football League on Sunday.

And when Union Berlin opened the scoring before the end of the first half with a free kick, which was successfully cornered by Croatian Josip Juranovic (45 + 3), Bochum forced him to equalize from a penalty kick, translated by the Austrian Kevin Stoeger (55).

Onion Berlin failed to snatch the three points, after suffering a severe blow after its defender Paul Yakel (61) was sent off for receiving a second yellow card.

Thus, despite the tie, Union Berlin raised its tally to 52 points in third place, five points ahead of second Borussia Dortmund and seven points ahead of leaders Bayern Munich, noting that the latter two faltered on Saturday.

Union Berlin is also a point ahead of Leipzig IV (51 points), who beat Augsburg 3-2 on Saturday.

Behind them, Freiburg is in fifth place with 50 points, which it reached after coming from behind with a goal against its host Werder Bremen to a 2-1 victory within four minutes.

As the hosts advanced with a goal in the 46th minute through Maximilian Philip, the guests turned the score in their favor with goals from Hungarian Roland Salai (67) and Lucas Holler (71).

On the other hand, a series of five victories for Bayer Leverkusen stopped, when it fell into a goalless draw against its host, Wolfsburg.

With a score of 44 points, Leverkusen remained in sixth place, two points away from seventh Eintracht Frankfurt, and may return to the heart of the struggle for European seats as it hosts Leipzig next week, before visiting Union Berlin in two weeks.
