A Saudi delegation in Tehran to discuss reopening the kingdom's representations (Ministry of Foreign Affairs)

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Saturday that a diplomatic delegation had arrived in Tehran to discuss mechanisms for reopening the Kingdom's representations in the Islamic Republic, two days after the foreign ministers of the two most important regional powers in the Gulf met in Beijing.

It is the first official visit by Saudi officials to Iran since the sudden announcement on March 10 of a Chinese-sponsored agreement to resume diplomatic relations severed between Riyadh and Tehran seven years ago.

The Saudi Press Agency (SPA), quoting the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reported that the visit comes "in implementation of the joint tripartite agreement of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Islamic Republic of Iran and the People's Republic of China."

She explained that "the Saudi technical team, headed by Nasser bin Awad Al-Ghanoum, met with the Chief of Protocol at the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Honardost , at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the capital, Tehran."

While the Saudi ministry did not specify the duration of the visit, it indicated that the Iranian official, "Honardost, expressed his country's readiness and readiness to provide all facilities and support to facilitate the mission of the Saudi team."

On March 10, Tehran and Riyadh announced the agreement after a seven-year estrangement, following the attack on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran over the execution of Saudi cleric Nimr al-Nimr.

In a joint statement, Riyadh and Tehran stressed, in a joint statement, following a meeting between the Saudi Foreign Ministers, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, and the Iranian Foreign Minister, Hussein Amir Abdollahian, Thursday in Beijing, "the importance of following up and implementing the Beijing Agreement, which strengthened mutual trust and expanded the scope of cooperation, and contributed to achieving security, stability and prosperity in the region." ".

It is expected that the next step in the path of restoring relations between the two countries will be the visit of Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi to Riyadh after receiving an invitation from Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz, as confirmed by Iranian officials, an invitation that Saudi Arabia has not yet confirmed.
Iran and Saudi Arabia, two regional rivals, have fought regional disputes by proxy, most notably the war in Yemen.

The two countries held a number of rounds of dialogue in Baghdad and the Sultanate of Oman before reaching an agreement in Beijing, which was negotiated over a period of five days between the Secretary of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, and his Saudi counterpart, Massad bin Muhammad Al-Aiban.
