Madrid - (AFP) - A 13-month-old girl underwent the world's first bowel transplant , taken from a person whose heart had stopped beating, according to Spanish health authorities.
And the health authorities in the Madrid region announced in a statement on Tuesday that the La Paz hospital had succeeded in performing “the first bowel transplant in the world after this organ was donated by a person whose heart had stopped contracting.”
The authorities stated that the child, Emma, "was discharged from the hospital and is currently in her home with her parents, me and Daniel, and she is in excellent condition."
The organs of patients whose hearts have stopped after their death are donated. The authorities stated that this technology allows, "after obtaining a person's death certificate, to preserve organs by pumping blood mixed with oxygen into them."
And she emphasized that this technique "has never been used before today for the intestines, as it is not suitable for it, despite the death of 30% of the patients whose names are on the waiting list."
Several teams in the hospital located in the Spanish capital conducted research and experiments over a period of three years to prove that this transplant is viable.
