Kabul (AFP) - Flash floods caused by heavy rains have killed at least 29 people and destroyed dozens of homes in eastern Afghanistan, officials said Monday.

Heavy rain fell during the last 24 hours in the states of Parwan, Kapisa and Nangarhar.

The spokesman for the Ministry of Disaster Management, Muhammad Nasib Haqqani, said that at least twenty people died in Parwan. He added that five people died in Kapisa province and four in Nangarhar.

For his part, the spokesman for the governor of Parwan province, Hekmatullah Shamim, confirmed that hundreds of people are still missing.
And Muhammad Nassib Haqqani told AFP that "fields and dozens of homes and roads were destroyed."

Rescue and emergency aid teams have been dispatched to the affected areas.
