Starmer's Successor Candidate Calls for Sanctions on Israel and Ban on Settlement Goods

Andy Burnham, widely seen as a leading candidate to succeed Keir Starmer as leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister of the UK, has emphasized the need for the United Kingdom to take tougher measures against Israel. Burnham clarified that the current policy requires a comprehensive review to ensure real pressure is exerted to halt the escalation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, noting that the party's previous record on this issue faced sharp criticism.

In recent press statements, Burnham expressed regret over the Labour Party's stance at the beginning of the Israeli military operations, considering the party's reaction not to have met the expectations of many. He indicated that the delay in calling for a ceasefire was a mistake that must be corrected by adopting firmer and clearer positions regarding the ongoing violations in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The Labour candidate stressed the necessity of seriously considering imposing new economic sanctions targeting illegal settlement activities in the West Bank. He called for investigating legal mechanisms aimed at banning the trade of goods and products originating from these settlements, affirming that this step represents an effective means of pressure to comply with international laws that consider settlements an obstacle to peace.

Burnham touched upon international reports discussing serious transgressions during the war, pointing to increasing evidence suggesting the possibility of war crimes being committed in Gaza. However, he clarified that the final determination on these accusations falls within the jurisdiction of international courts and competent judicial bodies, and it is not for political leaders to issue final judgments without a legal process.

Burnham's statements revealed the depth of tensions caused by the war within the Labour Party, where the previous leadership's positions led to divisions among members. Observers believe that these new calls for sanctions reflect an attempt to mend relations with the party's base, which criticized what it described as 'leniency' towards Israeli policies in recent months.

Despite his escalating tone towards the Israeli government, Burnham was keen to emphasize the party's constants regarding combating hatred, stressing the party's commitment to the principle of zero tolerance for any form of antisemitism. He considered that political criticism directed at the policies of the State of Israel must be completely separated from any discriminatory practices against the Jewish community in Britain.

Burnham concluded his remarks by affirming that Britain possesses diplomatic and economic tools that it has not utilized sufficiently to influence the course of events. He called on the British government to strengthen its international stance and contribute more effectively to efforts aimed at ending the conflict and ensuring the protection of civilians, considering that the time has come to move from words to concrete actions.

Britain has been too slow in calling for a ceasefire, and we must now strengthen our position and make an additional effort to pressure the Israeli government.
