Albanian anti-corruption authorities have issued arrest warrants for 20 citizens suspected of involvement in a vast money laundering network, amid reports linking these activities to a massive tourism project promoted by the family of US President Donald Trump. The specialized public prosecution clarified that ongoing investigations have revealed serious intersections between major real estate investments and illicit proceeds from international drug trafficking.
These judicial actions come at a time when the country is witnessing a wave of popular protests that began about two weeks ago in the capital, Tirana, and protected areas such as Zvërnec and Sazan Island. Protesters are expressing their rejection of tourism projects that threaten the environment, which are now under judicial scrutiny due to suspicions of being used as a cover to integrate dirty money into the state's official economy.
According to official data issued by the specialized prosecution, investigations into the international cocaine trafficking file led to the discovery of deliberate concealment of the sources of real estate properties. Sources confirmed that these operations aimed to legitimize huge sums by injecting them into urban development projects in strategic areas including Tirana, Palasa, and Himara, in addition to several attractive coastal investment areas.
In the context of executive measures, authorities announced the arrest of four of the 20 wanted individuals so far, with the pursuit of the others continuing. The judiciary also imposed precautionary seizure on assets and properties with a total value exceeding 128.4 million euros, including suspicious sales contracts concluded by local companies with individuals believed to be fronts for international entities.
Official documents in the Albanian commercial register indicate a striking match between the lands covered by the investigations and the descriptions provided by Ivanka Trump, the daughter of the US President, for her anticipated tourism project. Ivanka had previously spoken about owning a coastline extending for about eight kilometers in the Zvërnec area, describing the location as having white sandy beaches and unique lagoons.
The investigations particularly highlight a figure symbolized by (A.Sh), whom investigative sources suggest is businessman Artur Shehu, involved in selling vast tracts of land to 'Albania Land Development' company. This company is believed to be the main entity responsible for implementing the tourism complex that has sparked widespread controversy due to its overlap with natural reserves and ambiguous ownership issues.
For its part, the Public Prosecution did not directly mention the Trump family name in its latest official statement, but focused on the contracts concluded with the aforementioned company, whose data matches the American project. The file remains open to the possibilities of legal and international escalation, especially with increasing popular pressure demanding transparency in granting investment contracts in protected coastal areas.
