The results of a recent public opinion poll in the United States have revealed a significant shift in voters' attitudes towards the ongoing military escalation against Iran. Data published by the Policy Project of the Institute for Understanding the Middle East, in cooperation with the 'Demand Progress' organization, showed that a wide segment of Americans has become suspicious of the true objectives behind these joint attacks between Washington and Tel Aviv.
According to the released figures, approximately 56% of respondents believe that military operations against Iranian targets primarily serve Israeli interests. In contrast, the percentage of those who see these attacks as a direct American national interest did not exceed 29%, reflecting a significant gap between the official view of the American administration and public perceptions.
Regarding the general stance on the war, 53% of voters expressed their explicit opposition to American attacks on Iran, while 43% showed their support for these military actions. These results indicate a state of public division, but they clearly lean towards rejecting involvement in a direct military conflict that could have widespread regional and international consequences.
The poll also shed light on the political implications of this war domestically in the US, with 43% of participants stating that the likelihood of their support for the Republican Party decreased as a result of the recent attacks. In contrast, 31% of voters affirmed their continued loyalty to the party led by President Donald Trump, indicating that foreign policy towards the Middle East could become a crucial electoral pressure point.
Age emerged as one of the most important determinants of attitudes towards the conflict, as the poll showed a sharp generational divide within American society. 68% of voters under the age of 45 expressed their desire to see a political candidate who works to reduce support for Israel, while 56% of older age groups still prefer to give absolute priority to supporting Tel Aviv and strengthening its alliance with Washington.
Regarding the extent of allies' influence, 43% of participants believed that Israel has an influence that exceeds normal limits on the formulation of US foreign policy. Despite this, 41% of respondents believe that this level of influence is 'appropriate,' which reflects an intellectual struggle over the independence of American decision-making amidst successive crises in the region.
This poll comes at a time when the region is witnessing unprecedented escalation since the start of military operations on February 28, which resulted in the killing of hundreds of people, including high-ranking Iranian leaders. Tehran continues to respond by targeting what it describes as American interests and Israeli sites, amid international warnings of the situation spiraling into an uncontrolled, full-scale war.
56% of American voters believe that attacks on Iran primarily serve Israel's interests, compared to only 29% who believe they serve Washington.
