The Guardian stated in its editorial that Britain's announcement of recognition of a Palestinian state should be a call for serious action, not just an attempt to cleanse the conscience or a symbolic step without impact, noting that this step should mark the beginning of renewed diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war on Gaza and increasing pressure on the Israeli occupation.
The newspaper pointed out that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is catastrophic, with the occupation having killed more than 65,000 Palestinians so far, most of whom are civilians, while the northern part of the strip faces the danger of ongoing hunger, and the prospects for a ceasefire seem slim, let alone reaching a long-term political settlement.
The Guardian emphasized that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's announcement of his country's recognition of a Palestinian state came at a time when the hope for a two-state solution is threatened with extinction, but he stressed that "we cannot let this light go out."
Promoting the illusion of a Palestinian state without taking serious actions would be harsh and cowardly.
