The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, called on the international community not to "fear" the retaliatory reactions of the occupation, emphasizing that its policies continue to aim "to completely destroy Gaza and gradually annex the West Bank," regardless of any international steps.
In a statement to Agence France-Presse on Friday, Guterres's remarks came in response to reports indicating that the occupation threatened to annex the West Bank if Western countries proceeded with recognizing the State of Palestine next week in New York.
The Secretary-General described the situation in the Gaza Strip as "the worst level of death and destruction I have seen since I took office as Secretary-General, and perhaps in my life," noting that "the suffering of the Palestinian people is indescribable" amid famine, lack of effective healthcare, and massive displacement.
The problem is not in the word; the problem is in the reality on the ground.
