In a development that portends serious repercussions for the future of the region, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signed a decision to expand settlements in the area known as E1, located between occupied Jerusalem and the settlement of Ma'ale Adumim.
The plan, which involves the construction of more than 3,400 settlement units, effectively threatens to divide the West Bank into two parts, isolating its northern region from the southern region, and undermining any chance of establishing a geographically contiguous Palestinian state.
The signed agreement establishes a new reality, where Ma'ale Adumim and Jerusalem will become a connected geographical area, Palestinian villages will be annexed, and the possibility of establishing a Palestinian state in the occupied territories will fade away.
Building in E1 is a death knell for the two-state solution.
