Israel has been waging a fierce war on the Gaza Strip for months, under repeated security and political justifications, including the aim of delegitimizing the Palestinians and portraying them as a permanent security burden or an entity incapable of independent existence. However, the realities on the ground are moving in a different direction, as the war, accompanied by widespread destruction and significant human losses, has revealed a completely different truth: Palestine today is more present in the global scene than it has been for decades.
The humanitarian tragedy experienced by civilians in Gaza has not remained confined to official frameworks or diplomatic reports, but has spread widely through international media and social media platforms. Images of children under the rubble, hospitals crowded with the injured, and displaced families searching for shelter have made the Palestinian cause seep into nearly every home around the world. Palestine is no longer just a matter for political elites or international institutions; it has become part of the daily lives of millions of individuals who closely follow it and express their solidarity through images and public stances.
However, the consolidation of Palestine's presence on the global stage does not necessarily mean legitimizing the choices made by Hamas. The attack launched by the movement, which ignited the war, came in a context that did not take into account the heavy human cost on the residents of Gaza, who found themselves once again at the heart of an unequal confrontation. Millions of civilians, including children, women, and the elderly, have paid a heavy price as a result of these political and military calculations, raising serious questions about the wisdom of such risks and the ability of Palestinian factions to protect their community above all else.
This massive media exposure has resulted in a noticeable shift in international public opinion. In Europe and the United States, where official positions have long been linked to support for Israel, unprecedented protests have emerged, and solidarity and boycott campaigns have taken on an organized and ongoing nature. According to several polls, an increasing majority of public opinion now views the Palestinians as victims of historical injustice and an unequal conflict, which has strengthened popular sympathy and opened new discussions within Western societies about the nature of government policies toward the Middle East.
This popular shift cannot be viewed in isolation from the political future in democratic countries. Political parties, by the nature of the electoral system, cannot ignore the general mood for long. As the base of sympathizers with Palestine widens, political forces will be compelled to take these positions into account, which may gradually reflect on their electoral programs and foreign policies. Upcoming elections in several European countries, as well as in the United States, may witness deeper discussions about the relationship with Israel and the necessity of adopting more balanced positions regarding the conflict.
On the other hand, it can be said that the current war has weakened the Israeli narrative in front of international public opinion. While Tel Aviv has sought to convince the world that its security justifies all military actions, images and daily realities have revealed that the human cost is high and unjustified. This contradiction between the official Israeli discourse and the tangible reality on the ground has made it difficult to convince the global audience of the traditional Israeli narrative.
Thus, what Israel intended to be a step to undermine the legitimacy of the Palestinians has practically turned into a factor that re-legitimizes their cause and enhances its presence. Palestine, today, is no longer a file hanging on the negotiation table, but has become a global humanitarian and political issue rooted in the collective conscience, with a wide and influential audience that is difficult to ignore in the coming phase.
In conclusion, it seems that the war on Gaza, despite its catastrophic effects and the responsibilities of Palestinian factions for the dangers they have placed civilians in, has solidified Palestine as a global issue open to the future. The international popular sympathy, and the political transformations that may result from it, make it difficult to isolate the Palestinians or marginalize their cause; rather, it may open the door to a new phase in which Palestine's presence is stronger and more firmly established in the international scene.
