In recently leaked recordings, Aharon Haliva, the former head of Israeli military intelligence, stated that the success of Hamas in carrying out the Al-Aqsa Flood operation is not due to intelligence failure or a weak response, but to deeper factors related to the occupation system itself. He emphasized that the situation requires a radical correction of the entire system.
During the recordings, Haliva recounted the events leading up to October 7, explaining the reasons that led him to resign from his position. He pointed to the political and military decisions that led to this operation, denying that intelligence failure or individual mistakes were the cause.
Haliva said, "This is not about a mistake that can be corrected; it requires dismantling and rebuilding the entire system." He asserted that anyone who claims otherwise is lying, stressing that the intelligence framework that has been in place for years is responsible for this failure.
In part of the recordings, Haliva discussed the details of the hours leading up to the attack, noting the activation of cell phone cards by Hamas, but he confirmed that he did not receive any warning calls afterward. He explained that the Shin Bet's assessments indicated that the situation was under control.
Haliva blamed the Shin Bet for failing to detect the attack, questioning the fate of the billions spent on this agency. He expressed concern for the future of the occupying state, indicating that things are heading toward the worse.
Regarding his resignation, Haliva stated that he decided to take responsibility, describing those who remained in their positions as fearful. He affirmed that the military and political leadership needs to provide protection for its citizens, and that failure to do so warrants returning home.
In his comments on the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, Haliva said that the large number of Palestinian martyrs is something necessary for future generations, pointing out that Palestinians need to feel the price they are paying.
Haliva also criticized the occupying government's head, Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of allowing Hamas's power to grow and not taking serious steps to confront security challenges. He considered that Netanyahu is exacerbating the divisions between the West Bank and Gaza for political reasons.
After the recordings were leaked, Haliva issued a statement taking responsibility for the events, calling for the formation of a government investigation committee to determine the causes and prevent the repetition of the disaster. He confirmed that what was leaked is only part of his remarks in a closed forum.
It is worth noting that the Al-Aqsa Flood operation carried out by the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades was in response to the crimes of the occupation against Palestinians, resulting in the deaths of more than a thousand Israelis, while the Israeli government refuses to form an official investigation committee into the events.
It is something much deeper that goes back years and requires a more profound correction.
