In recent weeks, the phenomenon of Israeli occupation soldiers' suicides has returned to dominate discussions in the occupying state, as studies have revealed a concerning rise in this phenomenon among regular soldiers and army reservists. This issue has become one of the most bloody topics stirring controversy in Israeli society.
The writer Lidor Soltan quoted Brigadier General Amir Vadmani, head of the Human Resources Division in the occupying army, stating that 16 suicide cases have been recorded so far in 2025. This was mentioned during his testimony before the Knesset's Human Resources Subcommittee, where he provided details about the steps the army is taking to address this phenomenon.
Vadmani pointed out that the army adopts two main messages when discussing suicide cases. The first message relates to the increase in suicides since the beginning of the war on Gaza, reflecting the deteriorating psychological state of the soldiers. The second message is that the army does not consider all suicide cases to be directly linked to the fighting in Gaza, although many of the soldiers who committed suicide were significantly affected by the war.
The writer discussed how many soldiers made their final decision to commit suicide during their training or while serving on the home front, indicating the depth of the psychological crisis these soldiers are experiencing. Despite the announced efforts by the army, it faces criticism for not acknowledging its failure in addressing this issue.
Soltan added that the army concealed the results of investigations related to 54 soldiers and officers who ended their lives over the past two years, reflecting the army's policy of opacity in this context. This situation calls for the army to take real and effective steps to stop this painful phenomenon.
In January 2025, the army published data about its losses, revealing that 21 regular and reservist soldiers committed suicide during 2024. However, doubts remain about the accuracy of these figures, as it is believed that the army deliberately hides the extent of its failure to address this issue.
The army states that it investigates every suicide incident in order to prevent similar cases from recurring.
