Netanyahu warns London of serious consequences if it recognizes Palestine.
The British newspaper "The Times" reported that Benjamin Netanyahu's government is considering withdrawing defense and security cooperation with the United Kingdom if British Prime Minister Keir Starmer proceeds with his plan to recognize the State of Palestine next month. This threat comes at a sensitive time as some Western countries seek to strengthen their position on the Palestinian issue.
Tel Aviv has warned that this step could lead to "serious consequences," reflecting Israeli concerns over any official recognition of Palestine. This threat is part of a range of potential responses that include other measures that could affect relations between the two countries.
The newspaper noted that halting defense cooperation could significantly impact intelligence sharing, which has contributed to thwarting terrorist plots in the United Kingdom. There are also defense and trade deals worth up to £6 billion, supporting around 38,000 jobs in the UK.
At the same time, the internal position of the occupation is witnessing a division among ministers, with some warning of economic and security repercussions that may arise from this decision. Meanwhile, others believe that the threat could be used as leverage to change London's stance on the Palestinian issue.
These developments come after the leaders of France, Britain, and Canada announced last July their intention to recognize the Palestinian state, which Netanyahu considers a threat to the security of the occupying state. This escalation in positions reflects the increasing tension in international relations regarding the Palestinian issue.
