Dr. Jamal Harfoush: The world's silence on the famine in Gaza is not only a horrific moral decline but a true betrayal of the international covenant to protect civilians
Dr. Tamara Haddad: Breaking the "hellish cycle" in Gaza begins with a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and Hamas stepping down from power to end Israel's justifications
Adnan Al-Sabah: A unified global front is needed, starting from Palestine, to include the active forces in the world to confront injustice and end Gaza's suffering
Dr. Amjad Bishkar: The United Nations must officially declare famine in Gaza, and any delay in doing so gives Israel cover to continue its policies
Dr. Mohammed Al-Tamawi: The first possible exit is serious international pressure on the occupation to stop the aggression and lift the siege immediately
Samir Anabtawi: What is happening in the Gaza Strip is not just famine but a systematic starvation serving political goals and pushing towards forced displacement
In light of the worsening humanitarian tragedy in the Gaza Strip, international concern is growing over the systematic transformation of starvation into a weapon of war in the hands of the Israeli occupation, as images of famine, food and water shortages, and lack of medicine have become daily scenes pounding the beleaguered sector under the genocide war.
The suffering in the Gaza Strip has surpassed the description of "humanitarian crisis" to what writers, political analysts, specialists, and university professors describe in separate conversations with "Y" as "a crime of genocide by starvation," amid a troubling international silence viewed as a complicit betrayal legitimizing the continuation of the tragedy.
Writers, analysts, specialists, and university professors emphasize the necessity of activating international justice tools and proposing initiatives to form international coalitions that impose sanctions on the occupation if the starvation policy continues, alongside activating the principle of "responsibility to protect" at the international level, considering what is happening in Gaza a crime against humanity that cannot be ignored.
They warn that the continuation of the current situation without serious international intervention will lead to a comprehensive catastrophe that will be recorded as a stain of shame on the forehead of all humanity.
Genocide by Starvation
A professor of research methodologies and political studies at the Academic Research Center in Brazil, Dr. Jamal Harfoush, confirms that what Gaza has been experiencing for months exceeds the limits of the usual humanitarian crisis, reaching "a crime of genocide by starvation" executed systematically and deliberately, according to international legal standards, especially the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and Articles 7 and 8 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
Harfoush believes that what is happening in the Gaza Strip, with the continuous strangulation of life and starvation of civilians, should not be met with calls for pity or condemnation statements, but with comprehensive legal, political, and humanitarian action that puts a definitive end to this tragedy.
Harfoush points out that breaking this "hellish cycle" begins with internationalizing the tragedy legally, by activating international judicial mechanisms and submitting urgent referral memos to the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to open an official investigation into the crime of using starvation as a weapon of war, based on Article 8 (2)(b)(xxv) of the Rome Statute.
Harfoush emphasizes the necessity of legally compelling the occupation to lift the complete siege by issuing judicial orders from the International Court of Justice and binding resolutions from the Security Council based on Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, which imposes the opening of crossings and facilitating the entry of food and medicine without any restrictions.
Harfoush calls for activating the principle of "responsibility to protect" (R2P), which obliges the international community to intervene immediately when genocide or crimes against humanity are committed, which clearly applies to the Gaza situation, in light of the absence of any local means to protect the population.
Launching a Three-Dimensional Bridge
Harfoush proposes launching a three-dimensional bridge: legal, media, and diplomatic, to present evidence to the international community and strip the occupation of its cover of impunity.
Harfoush asserts that this path will pave the way for a comprehensive boycott of Israeli officials involved in the crimes and create an international environment conducive to holding them accountable.
