Trump Administration Warns States: No Disaster Aid for Those Who Boycott Israel

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued a statement warning U.S. states and cities that they will not receive funding designated for natural disaster preparedness if they choose to boycott Israeli companies. The agency clarified that the grant conditions require beneficiaries to affirm that they will not sever their business ties with Israeli companies specifically, in order to ensure receipt of the funding.

The agency noted that this condition applies to over $1.9 billion in funding, which is typically used to cover costs for search and rescue equipment, salaries for emergency managers, backup power systems, and other related expenses. This action is part of the Trump administration's attempt to strengthen its political stance by directly using federal funding to support policies that align with its interests, particularly regarding Israel.

In a related context, the agency revealed its intention to ask states to spend part of the federal counter-terrorism funds to assist the government in apprehending immigrants, reflecting the U.S. administration's trends in utilizing funding to support its political and security priorities.

In another development, voices within the Democratic Party have begun to express their dissatisfaction with the policies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, especially in light of the escalating war on the Gaza Strip, which threatens to reshape the historical relationship between the party and Israel. A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that the department will enforce anti-discrimination laws and policies, including those related to the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, which the U.S. government considers anti-Semitic.

In a related context, a legal report from the University of Pennsylvania indicated that at least 34 states have laws or policies against the boycott movement, reflecting increasing government support for the government's stance on the boycott movement, divestment from it, and imposing sanctions on Israel. The agency clarified that major cities, such as New York, are set to receive funding of up to $92.2 million from the counter-terrorism program, based on the agency's assessments of security risks in densely populated areas.
