The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor documented the deaths of 14 elderly Palestinians in the Gaza Strip last week due to complications from hunger, malnutrition, and lack of medical care resulting from the comprehensive Israeli blockade of the Strip since March 2.
The Geneva-based human rights monitor said in a statement on Saturday that "a silent death is claiming the lives of the elderly and children in Gaza as a result of deadly living conditions deliberately imposed by Israel, most notably starvation and denial of care, as part of a genocide that has been ongoing for more than 19 months."
He explained that the 14 victims died in various areas of Gaza, where residents are suffering from severe shortages of food, water, and medicine, amid famine and the complete collapse of the health system, exacerbating the suffering of the elderly and sick, leaving them to face death in complete isolation.
Regarding the alleged Israeli-American mechanism for delivering aid to Gaza, the Observatory warned that this mechanism "is a maneuver to extend the illegal blockade by re-presenting the crime of starvation in a misleading form that gives it a false humanitarian character and legitimizes its continued use as a weapon within the ongoing crime of genocide."
On Friday, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee spoke at a conference at the US embassy in Jerusalem about the launch of "US efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza," claiming that President Donald Trump "has ordered his team to do everything possible to provide relief to civilians."
"This is a major effort, and it will require partnerships from governments, NGOs, and philanthropists around the world. There are many partners who have already agreed to participate," Huckabee said.
He added, "I would say that the Israelis will participate in providing the necessary military security because this is a war zone, but they will not participate in distributing food, or even in bringing food into Gaza. Their role will remain on the periphery."
