Palestine demands end to occupation in first draft resolution submitted to UN General Assembly

Palestine has submitted its first draft resolution to the UN General Assembly since gaining additional rights in May, calling on Israel to end its presence in the occupied Palestinian territories within 12 months.

This came during an emergency session held on Tuesday in the United Nations General Assembly regarding the legal consequences of Israeli activities in the occupied Palestinian territories.

In the opening remarks of the session, the President of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Philemon Young, stressed that the United Nations, the General Assembly and the UN Security Council are obligated to take steps to end the illegal Israeli occupation.

He added that the international community must ensure the rule of law, and expressed hope that today's session would have a positive impact in this regard.

"The people who are suffering in the region are waiting for us to make the right decision," he added.

For his part, the Palestinian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, said that more than 40 countries have already participated in submitting the draft resolution calling on Israel to end its presence in the occupied Palestinian territories within 12 months.

"Every country has one vote, and the whole world is watching to see if we will live up to the values we claim to embrace," he continued. "Please be on the right side of history, on the side of international law and peace."

Mansour stressed that the Palestinian people "want to live" and not just survive.

Mansour asked how many Palestinians must die to end this inhumane treatment.

Mansour pointed out that the United Nations General Assembly asked the International Court of Justice to express its opinion on the Israeli occupation, and that the court revealed the steps that the United Nations and all members must take.

He pointed out that what is happening in Gaza could be the "final chapter" of the suffering of the Palestinian people or the "first chapter" of further suffering for the entire region.

"Move now and put an end to death, suffering, violence, crime and injustice," he said.

The text of the draft resolution submitted by Palestine stated: “We call upon Israel to end its illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territories without further delay, and to do so within 12 months of the adoption of the resolution.”

In addition to calling on Israel to end its occupation in accordance with the decisions of the International Court of Justice, the draft resolution calls on Israel to end its new settlement activities and withdraw from all settlements.

He also stresses that Israel must compensate for the damage it has caused in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The draft resolution calls on all member states to fulfill their obligations under international law, support Palestine's right to self-determination, not accept the illegal situation created by Israel, not assist Tel Aviv and impose the necessary sanctions on it.

Palestine has the status of a “non-member observer state” at the United Nations, and was granted this status after a resolution adopted by the General Assembly by a large majority on November 29, 2012.
