Scottish Prime Minister Humza Yousaf resigns from his position

Scotland's Prime Minister, Humza Yousaf, resigned several days before a vote of no confidence in his government.

Youssef, whose Scottish National Party has been weakened by a campaign finance scandal and divisions over transgender rights, resigned after failing to reach an agreement with a splinter nationalist party that would have given him his single majority seat in Scotland's mobile regional parliament.

Youssef told reporters: “After spending the weekend thinking about what is best for my party, the government and the country that I lead, I concluded that repairing our relationship across the political divide can only be done with someone else at the helm of power.”

"I have informed the national secretary of the Scottish National Party of my intention to stand down as party leader," he added.
