Efforts to reach a truce during Eid al-Fitr: The parties show “flexibility” in the Cairo talks

The head of the delegation, which includes senior Israeli negotiators, met with the head of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), William Burns, and the Qatari Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani, as part of the talks hosted by Cairo in an attempt to reach an agreement on a temporary ceasefire. In the Gaza Strip, while the parties seek to reach a “humanitarian truce” agreement during Eid al-Fitr.

Earlier, on Sunday, the Israeli War Cabinet approved sending the head of the Mossad, David Barnea, at the head of a high-level delegation, to participate in the Cairo talks. It was reported that the Israeli War Cabinet decided to expand the powers of the negotiating delegation, which includes the head of the Shin Bet, Ronen Bar, And the army representative in the hostage file, Nitzan Alon.

On Sunday evening, the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation (“Kan 11”) quoted a senior official familiar with the negotiations as saying that “all parties are showing flexibility during this round of negotiations,” and added that “the United States is pressuring all parties in an attempt to reach an agreed-upon formula.” Both sides,” referring to Israel and Hamas.

Informed sources considered that Hamas is “interested in reaching a deal, after Israel lost prominent pressure tools it had on Hamas, such as expanding humanitarian aid, entering aid shipments from the port of Ashdod directly into the Gaza Strip, and withdrawing forces deployed in the Gaza Strip.”

In this context, an Israeli official said, in statements reported by “Kan 11”: “We are in critical days regarding the possibilities of reaching an agreement. There are already talks to reach an agreement with the beginning of Eid al-Fitr, and tonight we will know whether Hamas is truly interested in reaching an agreement.” Agreement." Reports indicated that the Israeli delegation will head to Cairo this evening.

High-level Egyptian sources also suggested that the current round of talks led by mediators in Cairo would succeed, as a “humanitarian truce” agreement and a temporary ceasefire would be reached in the Gaza Strip during the days of Eid al-Fitr. Considering that "the agreement is approaching strongly, and it is possible that the announcement will be made from Cairo."

The sources indicated that Cairo “received assurances that the head of the Mossad will attend the meetings that will be held in the coming hours.” Meanwhile, Hamas leader Bassem Naim indicated, “Expectations are still open to all options. We hope that the failure of Netanyahu and his government, and the internal and external pressure, will push for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of the occupation forces from Gaza.”

The Walla website quoted a senior Israeli official as saying, “The Cabinet’s directives to the negotiating delegation are to clarify the mediators’ proposal in detail and try to return to Tel Aviv with a formula that would lead to an agreement.” The Israeli official said: “They are authorized to return to determine what can pass,” referring to the available agreement formula.

“Kan 11” had quoted a source it described as “informed” of the negotiations, before the war cabinet session was held during which it was decided to send the delegation to participate in the Cairo talks, saying that “Israel is required, at this stage, to make difficult decisions, and when it is without Strategy, it is impossible to go far."

In turn, Channel 13 stated that talk about granting “expanded powers” to the negotiating delegation is inaccurate, and pointed out that the war cabinet tasked the negotiators with “listening to what the mediators will say, what they are offering, and what Hamas wants to accept; after that the negotiating team will return to Israel and will discuss The expanded cabinet details the proposed proposals.”

The Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, met with the head of the CIA in Cairo, and the meeting discussed “the joint Egyptian, Qatari, and American efforts to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip,” in a meeting that witnessed “a review of the developments in the field situation in Gaza, and the necessity it imposes.” To intensify efforts to calm the situation and stop the military escalation,” according to the Egyptian presidency.

Al-Sisi stressed the seriousness of the humanitarian situation that amounts to “famine” in the Gaza Strip, and agreed with the American official “on the necessity of protecting civilians and the danger of the military escalation in the city of Rafah, as well as the complete rejection of the displacement of Palestinians from their lands.”
