The Opium of the People in Times of Genocide.. How Islamists Use Religion to Weaken Palestine

Marx's saying about religion as the "opium of the people" is an important starting point for understanding how religion is employed in political and social contexts. According to Marx, religion is an expression of actual misery and a protest against bitter reality, but at the same time, it can turn into a tool for control and exploitation.

In this context, we find that some Islamists exploit religion to justify their political positions, which leads to the weakening of the Palestinian cause. Instead of being a source of inspiration for resistance and liberation, religion turns into a means to justify submission and surrender.

This phenomenon is clearly evident in the positions of some religious figures who promote the idea of cooperation with the occupation or justify meetings with Israelis, under the pretext of necessity or exceptional circumstances. This trend contributes to distorting the image of religion and gives the impression that national issues can be resolved through concessions.

Moreover, these practices reflect personal or political biases, as religion is used as a tool to justify certain positions, leading to a disparity in standards between different issues. While Hamas is criticized for its relations with Iran, the Syrian-Israeli relations are justified by the same jurisprudential rules.

This contradiction in standards highlights how religion can be used as a means to justify political exploitation, weakening the position of Palestinians and strengthening the power of the occupation. Instead of being a driving force for unity and resistance, religion turns into a tool for division and distraction.

This phenomenon requires reflection from intellectuals and advocates, to explore how to reshape religious discourse to be more in harmony with national issues. Religion should be a source of strength and inspiration, not a means for division or surrender.

In the end, we must be aware of how religion is employed in the political arena, and work to redirect religious discourse to serve the Palestinian cause, not the interests of exploiters.
