From Criminal Settler to Hero.. An Israeli Campaign to Polish the Image of the Killer of Palestinian Activist Auda Al-Hathalin
The Israeli polishing campaign aims to turn a Palestinian killer into a national hero and absolve him of the blood of martyr Auda Al-Hathalin.
On July 28, Israeli occupation forces, accompanied by a military bulldozer, stormed the lands of the village of Um Al-Khair in Masafer Yatta, south of Hebron, with the aim of expanding the Carmel settlement on confiscated land. During the confrontation, settler Yinon Levi shot martyr Auda Al-Hathalin, who was away from the confrontation, and he was martyred by his bullets despite the event being documented by cameras. The Israeli court refused to charge him and quickly released him, claiming self-defense.
Despite the evidence and videos showing the mistreatment of the residents by the occupation forces and the assault by the settler on civilians, Israeli campaigns attempted to exonerate Levi, describing him as a hero who defended his life from a Palestinian attack, claiming that Palestinians were the ones who initiated the assault, and that his actions were a natural reaction. Knesset member Tzvi Sukot described Levi as a "hero," claiming that justice was served after his release, while another deputy incited the killing of Palestinians, asserting that the weapon was for the protection of settlers.
In contrast, Israeli organizations and witnesses attempted to expose the lies, confirming that Auda Al-Hathalin, who was unarmed, was martyred by Levi's bullets because he was defending his land and dignity, and that the videos clearly show the brutality of the killing process. The organization "Rabbis for Human Rights" confirmed that Levi, who has a history of violence against Palestinians, killed Auda in cold blood, and that Israel legitimizes violence against Palestinians and promotes its goals through their expulsion and the seizure of their lands.
Knesset member Ofer Cassif confirmed that Levi's release reflects a discriminatory judicial system, where Palestinians are treated under military laws, while settlers are exempt from punishment, reflecting a system that institutionalizes discrimination and encourages impunity, especially in conflict areas. Previous documentation shows Levi's involvement in violent assaults and demolition operations, and he is working to implement ethnic cleansing plans in Gaza and the West Bank.
The research director at the organization "B'Tselem" confirmed that Levi is one of the leaders of the settlers in southern Hebron, and that he seeks to displace Palestinians and implement ethnic cleansing policies, and that international sanctions against him were limited and lifted after Trump's return to power. The Israeli judiciary, despite clear evidence, quickly released Levi and refused to extend his house arrest, claiming that the suspicions were weak and that he acted in self-defense, despite video documentation showing the opposite.
Human rights organizations, such as Amnesty International, condemned the killing of Auda Al-Hathalin, describing the incident as a brutal tragedy, and called for an independent international investigation, especially since Auda was a human rights activist and a father of three children, who had received threats before his martyrdom. Documentation shows that Levi threatened him with his gun and that he targeted him deliberately, in the context of the displacement and ethnic cleansing policies implemented by Israel.
Many testimonies confirm that the Israeli justice system discriminates between Palestinians and settlers, where Palestinians are punished with harsh penalties, while settlers are quickly released, reflecting judicial and security complicity that legitimizes violence and encourages impunity. According to experts, these policies institutionalize a system that threatens the lives of Palestinians and undermines their rights, leading to the continuation of violations and crimes against them without accountability.
