The corridors of the United Nations Security Council witnessed a heated diplomatic confrontation, where Russia and China formed a united front to condemn the American military intervention in Venezuela.
The two global powers described what happened as a 'blatant assault' that undermines the principles of multilateralism and pushes the global system toward the brink of chaos, as a result of Washington's preference for military force over diplomatic paths.
In a sharp speech, the Russian representative to the Security Council condemned what he described as the 'American aggression' on Venezuela, considering it a blatant violation of the norms of international law.
The Russian diplomat pointed out that the hegemonic approach practiced by America with the force of arms has begun to negatively affect dozens of countries in various regions around the world.
The Russian representative also directly called on the American leadership to immediately and unconditionally release Nicolas Maduro, as the legitimately elected president of an independent state, and release his wife who was detained with him during the operation.
For his part, the deputy Chinese representative strongly condemned what he described as the 'unilateral illegal actions' taken by the United States.
The deputy representative sharply criticized Washington's policy, which prioritized its interests and influence at the expense of the principles of international multilateralism, affirming that resorting to military action as an alternative to diplomacy represents a direct threat to security and peace, not only in Latin America, but on the international level as a whole.
These firm positions reflect the depth of the rift in the Security Council, where visions clash between Washington's justifications for its operation and the insistence of 'Moscow and Beijing' on the principle of national sovereignty.
This bodes ill for a diplomatic paralysis that may hinder any UN move to resolve the crisis in the foreseeable future.
