Israeli negotiating delegation head Ron Dermer arrived in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, on Wednesday to participate in indirect talks with Hamas regarding a ceasefire agreement as part of U.S. President Donald Trump's plan.
Dermer, who is the Minister of Strategic Affairs, arrived simultaneously with the American delegation that includes Washington's Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law.
The Israeli newspaper "Yedioth Ahronoth" reported: "Minister Ron Dermer has arrived in Sharm El Sheikh to participate in talks on the return of hostages (prisoners) and ending the war in Gaza."
For its part, the Israeli Broadcasting Authority stated: "A new round of negotiations regarding the U.S. president's plan to end the war" in Gaza began this morning in Sharm El Sheikh.
The official authority added that the discussions "are gaining momentum with the joining of high-level delegations from the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey."
It quoted an unnamed Israeli source familiar with the matter as saying that "the United States is managing the negotiations at an accelerated pace to close outstanding issues, but so far it cannot be said that anything has been achieved."
Meanwhile, Israeli Channel 12 reported: "The defense establishment expects the situation to become clearer in a few days, through the ongoing intensive negotiations in Egypt."
It quoted a high-ranking unnamed Israeli security source as saying, "We have not been in such a situation before, and the current circumstances have created favorable conditions for progress towards an agreement to end the war and return the abductees."
According to the Israeli channel, "Due to the extreme sensitivity of the negotiations, the Israeli army received clear instructions from the highest levels: any uncalculated step could affect what is happening in the negotiation rooms in Egypt."
It continued: "The Chief of Staff of the army, Eyal Zamir, ordered the forces in the Gaza Strip to exercise the utmost caution to avoid any operational incident that could harm the chances of progress."
Channel 12 added: "Estimates indicate that within a few days, by Thursday, we will know whether this is a historic achievement or a return to large-scale war in the heart of the Gaza Strip."
Earlier on Wednesday, the Egyptian news channel reported that the third day of negotiations in Sharm El Sheikh would discuss the issue of prisoners and Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.
Hamas announced on Wednesday that it exchanged lists of names of prisoners to be released as part of the indirect negotiations with Israel, according to a statement from the media advisor to the head of the political bureau of the movement, Taher al-Nono.
Since Monday evening, Sharm El Sheikh has been hosting indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas regarding the implementation of Trump's plan to end the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.
On September 29, Trump announced a plan consisting of 20 points, including: the release of Israeli prisoners in Gaza, a ceasefire, and the disarmament of Hamas.
Hamas agreed to previous proposals for a ceasefire in the Strip, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delayed and continued the extermination in Gaza, while families of prisoners and opposition claimed that this aimed to keep him in power.
Tel Aviv estimates that there are 48 Israeli prisoners in Gaza, of whom 20 are alive, while about 11,100 Palestinians are imprisoned in its jails suffering from torture, starvation, and medical neglect, many of whom have died, according to Palestinian and Israeli human rights and media reports.
With U.S. support, Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza since October 8, 2023, resulting in 67,173 deaths, and 169,780 injuries, most of whom are children and women, and famine has claimed the lives of 460 Palestinians, including 154 children.
The United States is managing the negotiations at an accelerated pace to close outstanding issues.
