The Israeli newspaper "Haaretz," citing a new opinion poll conducted by Quinnipiac University in the United States, revealed an unprecedented decline in the level of public support for the Israeli occupation within the United States, amid the ongoing war on the Gaza Strip for the third consecutive year.
According to the poll, which included 1,276 registered voters between September 18 and 21, 2025, only 47% of participants said that supporting the Israeli occupation serves American national interests, while 41% disagreed, and 12% refrained from answering.
This represents a sharp shift compared to a poll conducted by the university in December 2023, when 69% of Americans supported the occupation while 23% opposed it.
The poll showed that 49% of American voters have a negative impression of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while only 21% expressed a positive opinion of him, just before his anticipated speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Friday, and his meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House next Monday.
The results also reflected a decline in Americans' confidence in Trump's handling of the Palestinian-Israeli issue, with only 31% expressing satisfaction with the ongoing Israeli occupation war in Gaza, while 56% rejected his management of it.
These data indicate a fundamental shift in American public sentiment, after decades of support for the occupation being a nearly consensus issue between the Republican and Democratic parties.
A Quinnipiac poll from 2023 showed that 49% of Americans sympathized with Israelis, compared to 24% with Palestinians, but the current figures align with results from a University of Maryland poll and a Gallup report that confirmed support for the Israeli occupation among Americans has reached its lowest historical levels.
The results reveal a sharp partisan divide, as only 8% of Democrats and 25% of independents supported the Israeli campaign in Gaza, compared to 71% of Republicans, according to Gallup.
Only 32% of Americans said they support increasing military aid to the Israeli occupation, while 60% opposed it, with opposition being more pronounced among Democrats and independents.
According to the poll, half of registered American voters believe that the occupation is committing genocide in Gaza, the highest level recorded in the United States.
This belief is more concentrated among Democrats and younger voters compared to Republicans and older individuals, highlighting the depth of partisan division within American society.
Another poll conducted by "Reuters/Ipsos" showed that 58% of Americans support UN recognition of a Palestinian state, while 59% believe that the Israeli military response in Gaza is "excessive."
At the European level, a poll in Germany revealed that 65% of citizens support imposing a partial ban on arms supplies to the Israeli occupation, reflecting growing international concern over the continuation of the war.
