A mysterious virus invades displacement camps in Gaza.. and warnings of a health disaster.

The medical teams in the Gaza Strip have sounded the alarm regarding the spread of a new virus among the displaced, with symptoms resembling those of the coronavirus (COVID-19). This alarming development exacerbates the humanitarian disaster in the region, which is suffering from a near-total collapse of its healthcare system under the current conditions.

The Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City, one of the few health facilities still operational, has witnessed a large influx of patients, most of whom are displaced, suffering from uniform and concerning symptoms. Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, the director of the complex, identified the nature of the symptoms appearing in the infected, which include: high fever and severe chills, persistent and acute cough, headaches, vomiting, and diarrhea.

In the hospital corridors, the tragedy is embodied in the stories of the displaced. A displaced woman from the Zeitoun neighborhood, who sought treatment at the complex, recounts her suffering, saying: "I have been suffering for a whole week from fever and a runny nose that won't stop." Her case is one of hundreds arriving daily at hospitals and shelters, increasing the pressure on the exhausted medical teams.

Health experts warn that the conditions in which the displaced live in Gaza create an ideal environment for the spread of viruses and epidemics. The severe overcrowding in shelters, lack of clean water, malnutrition, and the collapse of sewage systems are all factors contributing to the rapid spread of any infectious disease, turning it into a widespread epidemic that is difficult to control.

The emergence of this new virus not only threatens the lives of those infected but also poses a fatal blow to what remains of the crumbling healthcare system in Gaza, necessitating urgent international action to provide medical and humanitarian support before it is too late.
