The United Nations Children's Fund "UNICEF" reported that the ongoing attacks on the Gaza Strip have become a terrifying part of the daily reality for children, amid the genocide being perpetrated by the occupying state against Palestinians for the past 23 months.
The regional director for advocacy and communications at UNICEF for the Middle East and North Africa, Ammar Ammar, stated in a press release that the continuous bombardment of Gaza has resulted, in addition to killings and injuries, psychological and emotional trauma that is difficult to treat for about 1.1 million children, causing severe damage to their psychological development.
Ammar pointed out that serious violations have spread widely, as the deprivation of children from aid, hunger, ongoing forced displacement, and the destruction of hospitals, schools, water networks, and homes have become a daily reality for children in Gaza.
He added: "What we are witnessing in Gaza is not just a war against children, but the destruction of life itself," explaining that more than half a million people in Gaza have fallen prey to starvation, and that the deaths resulting from this could have been avoided.
The UNICEF official addressed the spread of images of emaciated children and infants dying from systematic Israeli starvation and disease, noting that both could have been prevented, and that no decisive action has ever been taken regarding this.
He emphasized that malnutrition among children is escalating at a catastrophic rate, saying: "In July alone, the suffering of more than 12,000 children from acute malnutrition was documented, and nearly one in four children suffers from severe acute malnutrition, which is the deadliest form and has devastating consequences for children in both the short and long term."
He confirmed that UNICEF is striving to accelerate its activities in the region, but the supply of food, basic necessities, and medical assistance is progressing slowly due to technical issues and the Israeli blockade on the area.
