From Jordan.. The Mayor of Barcelona doubles his support for UNRWA to 400,000 euros.

The Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, announced from the Jordanian capital Amman the doubling of his city's financial support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to reach 400,000 euros. This announcement came during an emotional visit by the mayor to UNRWA warehouses in Jordan, where he witnessed firsthand thousands of tons of stacked humanitarian aid that are barred from entering the besieged Gaza Strip due to the blockade imposed by the Israeli occupation on the agency.

Mayor Collboni, who toured the UNRWA facilities alongside Spanish Ambassador Miguel de Lucas, described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as "extremely dire," especially following the official declaration of famine last week. He confirmed that Barcelona's additional contribution, which continues the support that began in 2012, will be urgently allocated to purchasing medicines and food supplies and enhancing health support for doctors and nurses in Gaza.

Collboni stated: "Barcelona joins the condemnations issued by many countries and cities around the world, and we will double our contribution to alleviate the suffering of those who have nothing to eat or drink." These statements reflect the Spanish city's commitment to assisting Palestinian refugees amid the difficult circumstances they are facing.

The mayor's visit highlighted the scale of the logistical tragedy, as UNRWA currently holds nearly 900 trucks loaded with aid in Jordan, in addition to thousands of other trucks in Egypt. These vital supplies cannot reach the territory due to the Israeli blockade imposed on UNRWA since March of last year.

Collboni clarified that more than 6,000 trucks are currently stuck and unable to deliver food and medicine to Gaza "despite the declaration of famine," emphasizing that "what is urgent and necessary now is to ensure that aid reaches more than one and a half million people in Gaza."

For his part, the Director of UNRWA Affairs in Jordan, Olaf Becker, expressed the agency's deep gratitude to the Mayor of Barcelona for his "generous and ongoing support." He confirmed that this support enhances the agency's ability to provide its vital services to Palestinian refugees, especially amid what he described as "the most severe financial crisis in the agency's history."

Becker added: "We thank the Mayor of Barcelona for his genuine concern regarding the famine in Gaza and for his visit to our warehouses in Jordan, which contain enough aid to support two million people for three months."
