The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) announced that one million women and girls in the Gaza Strip are facing the threat of mass starvation due to the Israeli blockade and the ongoing war since October 7, 2023. This humanitarian crisis is exacerbated by the harsh conditions experienced by the residents of the Strip.
UNRWA clarified in a post on the 'X' platform that women and girls in Gaza are forced to adopt dangerous survival strategies, such as going out to search for food and water, which exposes them to the risk of being killed. These conditions reflect the extent of the suffering faced by women and girls amid the ongoing aggression.
UNRWA called for the urgent lifting of the blockade on the Gaza Strip and the wide-scale entry of humanitarian aid. The Strip is experiencing one of the worst humanitarian crises in its history, where severe famine intertwines with the genocide being perpetrated by the occupying state.
Since March 2, the occupying state has closed all crossings leading to Gaza, preventing any humanitarian aid from entering. This blockade has worsened the humanitarian situation, as the limited amounts of aid do not meet the increasing needs of the population.
The World Food Programme of the United Nations warned that one-third of Gaza's population, which numbers about 2.4 million Palestinians, has not eaten for several days. These figures reflect the magnitude of the humanitarian disaster that the Strip is experiencing.
The genocide being committed by the occupying state, with American support, has so far resulted in 61,827 martyrs and 155,275 injured, most of whom are children and women. There are also more than 9,000 missing and hundreds of thousands displaced.
The occupying state ignores international calls and orders from the International Court of Justice to stop the aggression, further increasing the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza. The famine ravaging the Strip has claimed the lives of 251 people, including 108 children, highlighting the urgent need for international intervention.
One million women and girls are facing mass starvation, in addition to violence and abuse.
