The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, confirmed that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip has reached catastrophic levels, with at least 100 children having died due to malnutrition and hunger. These figures reflect the extent of the suffering that children are experiencing under the difficult conditions facing the region.
Lazzarini pointed out that more than 40,000 children have been killed or injured as a result of Israeli shelling and airstrikes, highlighting the devastating impact of the aggression on children. He also added that 17,000 children have become unaccompanied or separated from their families, which increases their psychological and social suffering.
He explained that one million children in Gaza are suffering from severe psychological trauma, affecting their ability to study and learn. These figures reflect the profound impact of the aggression on the future of Palestinian children, as they are being deprived of their basic rights.
Lazzarini also noted that the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip recorded 8 deaths, including 3 children, due to famine and malnutrition in the past 24 hours. These figures reflect the tragic situation that the population is living under the imposed siege.
In his post on the X platform, Lazzarini called on the international community not to remain silent about what is happening to children in Gaza, emphasizing the need for urgent action to protect their rights and ensure their future. This call comes at a time when humanitarian crises in the region are escalating.
It is worth noting that Israeli occupation forces have been preventing aid trucks from entering the Gaza Strip since early March, having tightly closed the crossings as part of a systematic plan to starve the population, exacerbating the humanitarian situation.
The situation in Gaza requires urgent action from the international community, as children are the most affected by these crises. There must be an immediate response to meet their humanitarian needs and provide protection for them.
No one should remain silent when children are dying or are brutally deprived of their future anywhere, including in Gaza.
