Escalation of Violence in Berlin Against Supporters of Gaza and Widespread Arrests During Pro-Palestinian Protests
The German police used violence and arrested many protesters despite the peacefulness of their demonstrations.
The German capital, Berlin, witnessed an escalation in the use of force by police against demonstrators supporting the Palestinian cause, as a large number of participants were arrested during protests organized on Kurfürstendamm Street near Breitscheidplatz. These protests came in condemnation of the genocide and starvation campaign being carried out by Israel against the Gaza Strip, where hundreds of supporters of the Palestinian cause gathered to demand an end to military operations and the opening of humanitarian aid.
The demonstrators raised anti-Israel slogans and banged empty pots and pans to express the hunger crisis faced by the residents of Gaza due to the blockade on humanitarian aid. Shortly after the protest began, the police asked participants to disperse, but the protesters continued their chants, and some refused to leave, sitting on the ground in protest, which led to violent intervention by security forces who dispersed them and arrested several.
In a related context, another solidarity demonstration with Palestine took place in Wittenberg Square in Berlin, where demonstrators held signs reading "Stop the genocide in Gaza," "Send food to Gaza now," and "Stop the hunger in Gaza, and bring bread." They also raised other signs accusing Israel of being "terrorist" and "child killers," demanding an end to military operations and the opening of humanitarian crossings.
During this demonstration, the police arrested at least four protesters, while the situation showed continued tension in the city. Earlier on Saturday, the Ministry of Health in Gaza announced that the death toll of civilians suffering from hunger and starvation had reached 1,422 martyrs, with more than 10,000 injured since the beginning of the aggression on May 27.
Since October 7, 2023, Gaza has been experiencing a genocide war waged by Israel with the support of the United States, involving killing, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement, ignoring international calls and judicial orders to cease operations. This war has left more than 209,000 Palestinians dead or injured, with over 9,000 missing, in addition to hundreds of thousands displaced, and famine claiming the lives of many innocents, especially children and women.
