The 59th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council began in Geneva on Monday, focusing on the catastrophic conditions in the Gaza Strip due to the ongoing Israeli aggression for 20 months.
The session, which will run until the ninth of next month, will discuss the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, as well as several countries experiencing conflict, and the impact of climate change on humanity.
"Israeli war tactics are inflicting horrific and unacceptable suffering on Palestinians in Gaza, where more than 55,000 people, including children, have been killed, and attacks continue," UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said at the opening of the session.
He called for immediate and independent investigations into the deadly attacks on civilians trying to reach food distribution centers.
